Thank you. I'm so glad you found it helpful. Colors are mor arbitrary, but values have to work because they are the skeletal structure on which you hand all the detail and color.
Carl, you are probably one of the best broadstroke pencil artists today, you should do a whole series focused on that technique, it would be of huge value to the art community.
Just what we all need to learn. I don't know what first made me realize that I needed to learn the value of value studies, but I recognized that the paintings that held my attention were those with strong value patterns. Thanks for the comment.
First off , thank you so much for sharing this super useful lesson. Discussing the topic of value sketches is such an important pre-painting step in the process. But it is a special added treat to see more broad stroke technique. Your previous video on that was excellent and this example added more to our understanding of this technique. And then, as if not enough, you gave us a outstanding introduction of using ArtGraf as a different approach. Wow ! I certainly enjoyed being introduced to that drawing approach. Looking forward to seeing additional looks at using this sketching method. Thanks again.
Thank you for your excellent comment. One of my early instructors said to do a drawing before doing the painting. But he didn't tell me that the drawing should solve compositional problems and answer critical questions. I'm glad that you found this useful.
Beautiful drawing and skills shared with us!! I have always enjoyed drawing all my life; painting is fine and fun too. Thank you for an excellent demonstration!!
Thank you. For me, drawing makes painting even more fun because it allows me the freedom to be part of the process instead of reacting to problems that inevitably arise.
I just discovered art graf and really loved your values demonstration. I travel between CO and CA twice a year and need to travel light so art graf works well..Do you have any '24 workshops?
I had ArtGraf sitting on my shelf for over a year before I "discovered" it. The only workshop I am doing this year are "Summer Snow', two week long workshops at Snow College.in June, and Zion Canyon in November. I will be doing one or two online workshops.
Fantastic...Suddenly a light bulb has illuminated in my art world...this little instructional video has opened doors for me....Beautifully put together and very inspiring for me...thank you....
You can use hot presss watercolor paper. It is just more expensive. I cut a lot of mats for paintings, and end up with a lot of center cuts. I use these pieces of scrap mat board for value studies. @@josephineherrera8508
@@CarlPurcellArt I ordered the book you mentioned in this video. It’s a collector’s item, so a bit pricey. I also bought your book for myself and as a gift for a close friend. I love it. I have improved my painting with your tutelage.
Thank you very much. Very interesting and helpful. Could you tell me please if there a big difference between doing the primary sketch in using art graf like you did or using black watercolor.
This is so great, yr personal style & knowledge, but PLEASE next time LEVEL YOUR VIDEO CAMERA. It will make your videos more effective. You can even correct this very easily in older videos like this by editing them today on a phone.
I learned so much from your books and videos … in particular, value is infinitely more important than colours

Thank you, Nick I am planning a teaching video on broadstroke. It has been of great value to me. Thanks so much.

Just what I needed to learn. Thanks!

Thank you.
I love the broad stroke style and I suck at values, so this video is perfect for me haha. Thank you Carl. Also I'm buying your broadstroke video asap.
I am thrilled that you found something useful there. I try to share the things that I found helpful to me.

Very cool. Love the art graph
Thank you very much. Yes, the Art Graf is great fun.
Thanks Carl, I didn’t know about art graph, nor did I think about the shape of the lead and hoe it can be used with a 6B. It’s been eye opening.
Thank you. I am so glad you found it helpful. Happy drawing.

You're welcome! I'm so glad it heps.
Your casual study sketches are like my best works 😂
Never sell yourself short. I
've had a lifetime to practice, but thank you.
@@CarlPurcellArt thanks. I'm at the self study point where the pieces are finally beginning to come together, it's quite exciting.
Great stuff, Carl!
Thank you. I appreciate it very much.
I am loving watching it again. When you say mat board, is this the same as hot press watercolor paper? Could I use that too?

Carl, are you posting any new videos? I look forward to them.
Yes. I taught an on-line workshop on brush handling. It is being edited now and will soon be available. Thank you for your interest.
Thank you very much. Very interesting and helpful. Could you tell me please if there a big difference between doing the primary sketch in using art graf like you did or using black watercolor.
Probably not. I have also used India ink and water. I just like the ease of ArtGraf and the fact that I don't need a lot of water.

Pls add Turkish subtitles ❤
I wish I could do that in Turkish, French, Portuguese etc, bu there are too many languages.
