Been painting in oils for many years, but never stop learning. This is one of the best lessons I’ve seen, ever. I know to simplify, but easier said than done. This lesson will give me confidence to choose more complicated scenes. Thank you!
THANKYOU. Very much appreciated an artist who teaches the foundation skills we all need , presented clearly and in detail. So very encouraging and inspiring. No rush detailed tutorial. PERFECT
What I like about your idea of value studies, is that it matches the medium. In other words it matches the fluidity of watercolor. Also I was imagining myself painting and charging the big shapes as if I was painting in color. Also I think the big connected shape anchors your painting. Thankyou Andy, nice video.
Put more meat on the bones of a value study. Usually you get the break down into 3 values but the connecting isn't often gone through enough. The opportunity to get a live class has greatly reduced since the 70s. My local junior college has just offered paint one picture in water color by it is the first I have seen since looking for the last 3 years. I know that many instructor like you have gone to you tube and many people think you should pick one person out. This has its good points and also some bad point. Just mentioned one. Every instructor places different importance on a component of say value study. But all aspect of painting is seen differently or rather the emphasis to teach is different. So generally following one person in the broad sense is good, ignoring the potential tidbits that are given out can be detrimental. I am retired. My skill set and focus from observing others in engineer places me in about 1 to 2% group of people in the field. Talking about the full range of the engineering field. These break downs are I believe found in every field. At least I saw them with the other occupations that I worked with. So the thinking above could be just how my 2% think.
Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad you found it helpful. Andy does teach physical workshops, so if you're interested in joining one, I encourage you to check out his schedule on his website. You’ll find all the details there about upcoming opportunities. I also wanted to share that while art has foundational principles, it’s not as straightforward as ABCD. Unlike engineering, where there’s often a clear, linear path, art requires you to inject your own emotional self into the process. This can make it challenging, especially for those with an engineering background, because it involves a different way of thinking and expressing.
I love AE's approach and style, but with respect, what underlies the value masses, the structure/armature and cropping/ framing will make or break a composition as well. There is no saving any composition that is unorganized at the fundamental level. Perhaps the talented artist do it naturally, " augenblick" and they know what to do, and set to work. Those of us less talented will consciously need to learn good principles, and try, try ,try.
Great lesson, this has really improved my paintings.
Glad to hear :) Thanks for watching
I feel that something has finally clicked. Don’t know yet if my painting will improve but I suddenly get it. Thank you Andy.
That’s great to hear. But as you know, practice makes perfect so make sure you are consistent.
