Found a John Deere 400 - Finally

- One of the questions I am frequently asked is my opinion about a 400. Well, until today I had never owned a 400. Almost 10 years and I had never found a 400 I wanted. Sometimes you can get stuff at auctions.
Congratz ! i have a few of these. a mid 70s and late 70s with the front exhaust. your right on about the deck. mine has only one caster. the only real reason it was there was to aid in pulling the deck in and out from under the tractor, serves as a dolly.
Nice 400! I just bought a 90 318 that I'm going to restore and your videos will be a big help! You do a great job!
Keep um coming!!!
Congrats on the 318!
Nice find. I have two of them. It's a real workhorse. Congrats
That's a nice original 400. Not one of my favorite Deere tractors but pretty stout nonetheless. The idle should definitely be lower though...those early K series opposed twins almost sound like they have a "lope" or a cam in them at low idle.
I still have my 1982 400, bought it in 93, with cab and snowblower for $1750 runs great! Until this spring can't get it to start and stay running
Good find! Now you gotta find a 430 or a 332
I would really like to find another nice 430. Probably one of the few machines I regret selling.
I had a 400 loved it great tractor
The older 400 decks had one caster wheel in the front.
Owned/rebuilt one 👍. Loved that machine
Congrats! Took me 12 yrs to find a 318, which I picked up locally a month or so ago.
THEN - I found a 400 w/cl 0 hitch and deck last weekend - locally again - for $850 and had to pass... damn...
Newer hourmeter read 750 and it burned a little oil, plus trans and hydraulics "surged" so believe it was time for rebuids.
Yours looks better than the one I found.
The 400 I bought came at auction when a year earlier. I passed on an 400 and I regretted passing on it but I knew if I ever found one again I wasn't gonna leave that auction. Until I had it and I didn't tell my wife until I drove drove up into the yard with it and backed it out. It had a Kohler 532 19.9 . It was a 1979 and it was on its last leg. Hours??? dial wad broken, That's probably why they sold it. They patched it up and I was buying parts and pieces and filters and carburetors to keep ulit running and I finally took it to a professional and he said you're gonna be bleeding part money forever on this engine. You might think about putting a new motor in it. So I put a Honda GX630 , 24.5 hp, in it and it cost me $2300 bucks. That's the best money I've ever put into anything and it's running beautifully. I'll put a u tube video up to show it off, built a loader, and raised the rear fenders, added larger tractor tires, front and back, Its a work horse 🐎 I should say, its a 400! Stay tuned. 11:29
Pretty sure all of the 400"s came factory with the K532. Deere did some warranty replacement with K582"s.
Kyle, I have this same deck too. The serial number is gone. Could you tell me what blades you ordered? Seems to be a few options at different serial number breaks.
Also, I modified a set of 420/430 front draft arms to widen them and mounted the deck under my 430. The gearbox sits further back than the 420/430 does but it still raises plenty high.
The original 400 deck actually had 3 gauge wheels. The left front was Skid shoe the others were wheels
You are correct, and I knew that. I think the 317 deck i have been working on was in my brain.
what auction site do you look at? Is it geared specifically toward lawn equipment?
Many many auction pages. Auction zip is a great place to start if you are looking for auctions.
Could you do a comparison between the 300 series and the 400.. the 400 is a beast 👍
Nice looking 400! You should do a comparison video on the 400 series specifically the 400 versus the cub cadet super garden tractors mostly the 982 but also the 1872, 1572, 1772, and the 2072.
That sounds like it would be a cool series to do. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about Cub machines. Not that I have anything against them, I think it would be cool to collect two major manufactures. Problem is I barely have enough time to learn about Deere stuff. I certainly don't think I could learn about a second manufacture!
@@mmrbeef if you want me to i could send you pictures of mine. I have an 1872 the 1872 had the magnum 18 2072 had the 20 hp kohler magnum the 1572 had the kubota d600 and the 1772 had the d640. The 982 1912 and 1914 had the onan b43g. I have the original literature I could send you pictures of them with all the specs.
Yep, 400 was the first Super Garden tractor on the market.
I bought one many years ago, got a good deal on it. Motor was pretty much shot, Wish I known then what I know now, I would of put a new motor in it . Live and Learn....
You should make a video showing how to get rid of that creep.
I've got one that I picked up a few years ago. Has a briggs vanguard 23hp that was professionally installed. Cost the guy about $2500 to have that done.
Just picked up a loader for it. Works great! Made a 12/12/24 concrete block for a counter weight. Want to paint it green to match.
Do you know where I can get parts? Need a throttle cable and choke cable.
Sounds like a nice machine. I see a lot of 400's with repowers. You can probably find some off the shelf parts of the throttle and choke cables. You may have to shorten them but they can be found at a small engine parts place or your local farm store (just guessing).
Nice machine! Again, I never find machines like this in Kansas.
You just have to keep looking. Sometimes I go months without finding anything worth buying.
I have a 400 in good condition. Has a loader, live 3pt, rear pto and finish mower. Located in Colorado if interested.
@@tomcunning4473 how much, or what did you get for it? Thanks
Where you at in Kansas I have a 400 I’m selling
@@krestondebrick267 I'm in Wichita. Where are you located?
I’m interested in the snowblower that was in the video
The blower will probably be for sale some time in the next few months.

If you are interested in the blower. It happened to be the first thing I came to.
Is a 400 fender pan the same as the 300 series?
The 400 fender pan is a little wider and has some differences (cut out for the diff lock)
Nice tractor! A lot of problems with the Kohler 19.9. It would surprise me if it’s been replaced. Also, it’s almost impossible to find parts for the 19.9. I love the 400 though!
I haven’t seen any problems with the 19.9 K series. I know the KT series had oiling problems but the K532 and K582 are good engines
@@travisford3301 I had to rebuild the engine in both 400’s I have. Finally replaced it with a Vanguard. No more problems. Also have a 430 diesel.
I found a 400 at auction for 800 bucks, what did you pay for yours?
What is the yellow handle on the right side of the steering tower?
Thanks,
Art
That's the pto engagement lever.
Belt tensioner for the front and rear pto
I have a question about the h3 levers: What does the third one control? Which one has the float?
Thanks
Usually the inboard one
Mower deck/ 3 point lift
And the two front ports
That 400 is set up for a plow too?
With the correct blade yes. It does not have a 3pt so it cannot work with a moldboard plow.
Hey. I want to ask you a question I’m looking into working on 318’s I have the choice of 2 of them and I don’t know what ones better. I made a video, they were both my grandpas and one was gonna be sold but I have the choice of what one I want but I don’t know what the better option is, the video I made is unlisted and I’m willing to send it to you! If you could help me out let me know
Where can I find a parts diagram for the deck, because my dad just bought one that came with a deck snow blade and cab, we have the deck that's complete just we need the plate on the front and the other lift parts, we jus want to find out what all we are missing.
What does that black label on the hood say on it? What auction sites do you use?👍
Change oil every 25 hrs.
I use many auction pages. Try auction zip and find local auctions.
what is the liver on the right side of the tractor
The one with the yellow handle? That is the PTO lever.
Would you want to sell a air compressor for a roundfender ?
Not at this time. I actually use that unit from time to time. I had a second unit several years ago that I tried to sell whole. I ended up parting it out to other collectors.
It seems like everyone is getting a big super garden tractor but me lol I’ve been looking for a 455 or a 318 or a 400 or 420 my freind got a 400 and he didn’t even eat the one how do you like that it’s an interesting experience but I’d love a big tractor like this for yard and garden work
I have a 400 in good condition with a loader, live rear 3pt, rear pto and a finish mower looking to sell. Let me know if interested. Located in Colorado.
@@tomcunning4473 thank you ver Mutch for the info unfortunately I am in Pennsylvania and a long way away and I also have gotten a 318 with attachments but I. Would buy your 400 if I wasn’t so for away
@@tomcunning4473 the fact it has a lo set makes it more valuable people will buy those for great money personally I’d keep it as they are very rare machines especially with a loader
I got a 400 with loader and backhoe I paid 500$ for
Sounds like a great deal!
I am still waiting for you to get a John Deere 332 You be messaround with gas engines to Much
Deisel is more expensive than gas if I have a fleet it’s either all gas or Deisel most likely but I collect garden tractors via gas or diesel
I feel like that some days! But that is why I have the X748, 455, and 1445! Haha
@@mmrbeef so true
Idiot probably though ooh a John Deere zero turn it has to be worth at least $5000 right?
Idle seems really high but maybe it's just me. I have no experience with older Deere garden tractors.
You might be right on the auction.
I’ll have to check the rpms when I get to this project. I agree and it also doesn’t seem to have the range I would expect.
should be either a Kohler K532 (19.9hp) or if later, a K582 (23hp).
selling a 400 in R.I. only 423 hrs no scratches mint all original $3K
Man , get to the point !
