    The veggie is called 'witlof' in Dutch. I cut them in half and cook them. When they are almost cooked, I remove the most bitter part, it is in the middle. And then I roll them in a slice of ham and put some cheese on top. And then I put them into the oven. The kids love it that way!

    Hi Helen, regarding the endives (called chicoree in german): you can use them for salads but they can be a tiny bit bitter - maybe not a favourite for kids but they pair well with a yoghurty dressing and orange pieces. Alternatively, you can bake it in the oven with some ground cheese on top.

      A few people have suggested roasting with cheese, which sounds lovely!

      It really is! I was worried it was going to be hard and take us too long each day, but it's perfectly set that we can do it with the kids and it doesn't take long at all.

    I've had endive plenty in the states. Fairly common in salads or on produce shelves. I loved seeing all your fresh vegs.

      It's not something we commonly find in the supermarkets over here at all, so definitely something new for us to try.

    We call it Andijvie. Love it ! I always cut them in half, take the hard pard out. Wrap it in a slice of ham. Put it in an oven tray and cover it with cheese and put it in the oven. We add mashed potatoes to it and some gravy. Even my kids eat it. But only if I take the heart out and add enough cheese 😅

    You say Endive en-dive (dive as in dive into a pool). It's a type of lettuce, but fairly bitter if you eat it raw, nice in small quantities and goes well with a mustard dressing. You can cook it too, but I can't remember and recipes! 😂

      I'm a bit worried it's going to be too bitter for me hearing from others and having read about it. I couldn't manage Radiccio that was too bitter for me!

    Very, very late to the show, but for the next time you get Belgian Endive in your veg box. In the Netherlands (and my favorite) is to cut each endive into quarters lengthwise and steam them about half done. Then wrap each quarter with a slice of sandwich hom. Lay the wrapped endive in a buttered baking dish and at each end of the rectangular baking pan put a fair amount of mashed potatoes. Cover all with foil and bake in the oven until well heated through. Melt a bit of butter and drizzle over all the content of the baking dish (optional breadcrumbs and a bit of grated Parmesan on top) and bake an additional 5 or 10 minutes. Supper in one dish - - - yum!. Yeah for joke of the day! Salam wa sa’aadah

    Endives.. i love them in a salad, with a creamy dressing and mandarin segments mixed in the salad, to give you a sweet/bitter mix.I think Ive seen them somewhere grilles with cheese.. Kohlrabi is one of my favourites, just as is as a snack (just peeled and cut in cubes). But theyre nice as a side dish as well with a creamy sauce. Shame you cant get Kohlrabi easily in the main supermarkets in Scotland.
    Oooh, we're going to be gnome buddies! I cant wait to start using your Heritage Gnome yarn!
    Will have to check out your shop update, but think I have already 2 favourites...
    Ooh, was that a game you were playing or an advent calendar? Love this one!!

    I love it when Tom comes on, I had to think about the joke for a second there. In Germany the Vega are called endive and we eat it as a salad. My grandma would make it on the side when she made fried fish on Fridays and the. I would mash it with my potatoes. It rates very nice the slight bitterness and tang from the salad dressing with the creamy buttery potatoes. We also have Kohlrabi and they are one of my favorites. We boil them and then make a white sauce with it. They are also great peeled and raw. So did you put up the Papertiger advents?

    • @GiddyKnits
      @GiddyKnits  9 місяців тому +1

      Ooh thank you for the vegetables suggestions!
      We have put the paper tiger advents up, I'll share them in a couple of days once there's a few things on them ❤️

    @nefraial 9 місяців тому

    Kohlrabi is actually not a root vegetable but a swollen stem variety of the cabbage family.
    Witloof is related to endive but is a chicory variety. Great steamed and baked with a bacon and cheese sauce.
    Supporting small market gardeners is the only way we can stop the reduction of diversity due to the monoculture of supermarkets.

    • @GiddyKnits
      @GiddyKnits  9 місяців тому +1

      We've loved our veg box so far. It's nice to support local growers but also discover vegetables we wouldn't normally buy.

    • @nefraial
      @nefraial 9 місяців тому

      @@GiddyKnits That's a lot of fun (for non-picky eaters of course). To discover new things, find out the best way to eat them, and if they are found nice enough look forward to adding them to the seasonal diet.
      Boxes here come as a standard seasonal mix. You get staples like potatoes, onions and carrots in every box then whatever is seasonal. Everyone has the option of opting out of something (not all families like kale or chard) and every opt out is usually balanced by an addition of a few extras of something else, greens, staples or random choice (which is often some extra potatoes but can sometimes be a mystery itself lol)

    Happy vlogmas Helen! We used to get a veg box but the company closed down and I really miss it. I might see if a local farm does one instead. I like kohlrabi in a stir fry. No idea about the endives tho. How are u liking the EXIT calendar, we have it for the 2nd year this year. So much fun. Xx

    I tried endives too, but they felt too bitter raw. They are slightly better roasted in the oven or sauteed as a side together with other veggies.
