    A mentor once told me to never discuss politics, porn or religion in the work setting. I’m now adding horological water resistance to the list…

    100% agree. As a kid back in the 80s I ruined at least 2 Casio watches that said 50m on them. It wasn't until I had a 100m watch that I could actually go swimming and it survive. I felt very cheated by the watch industry after that. It's surprising that they can get away with it, like the industry that sells hard drives saying things like "120 Gigabytes" and it turns out to be only 90 when you plug it in. Yet, when you buy a 250GB SD card, it's pretty much spot on. Like why can't the industry even agree on this? Makes everyone very suspicious of ever buying anything. And don't even start on things like Tesla, lol

      Honestly every industry is a bit guilty of it and as someone who happens to be in the watch industry I fancied a moan about this specific issue as it REALLY bugs me

      @@WatchYourselfJorge As it should. More people should complain to trading standards or return goods that were misleadingly sold which didn't live up to what they claimed. The companies would soon get sick of the backlash and realise that they aren't making money selling snake oil.

      False equivalencty. All HDDs, SSDs, whatever, do have that capacity and there are also rounding errors.
      You see this in cars too. The Mustang 2011 to 2017 are NOT 5.0L motors. They are 4.995L. 2018 they began 5.002L

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 4 місяці тому

      @@Overlord277 So when I buy a 120gb hard drive and it turns out it's only 90gb, how is that not misleading me? And don't give me "yeah but they use bits instead of bytes" crap, because it's making excuses for clear misleading of the public with loopholes in wording. If a SD card can get it right, why can't the HDD manufacturers?

    • @Overlord277
      @Overlord277 4 місяці тому

      @@ArcanePath360 I just told you. The capacity is 120GB. What you want is for them to spend more money on a 130GB drive just so you get what you THINK is 120GB of storage. Unfortunately for you, science doesn't work that way. If they could give you 120GB while spending money on manufacturing a 120GB drive, they would.

    Good post, experienced watch owners understand the real truths of "water resistance", many new owners do not.

    Static versus dynamic pressure is a moot point …. You would have to wave your arms about like a demented octopus in order to make a difference. If you are going deeper than 100m on a regular basis there’s a good chance I’ll bump into you on a DSV in the North Sea …. and you won’t be wearing a watch over your hot water suit.
    Nice video on a touchy subject.

    ISO 6425, for a standardized reference.
    And I find it IMPOSSIBLE to increase the pressure 12.5 bar "just by wearing it". Try snorkling just a few meters deep, and try to replicate on the surface the pain in your ear. No way.
    Anyway, it would be an interesting engineering and CFD problem.

    Nice video but... 99% of watch companies have the explanation of the wr rating written in the manual they sell the watch with. They exactly write that a 50m watch is not for swimming. You can't blame them as a customer if you don't read their manual. I agree the ratings need to be more user friendly though.

    • @WatchYourselfJorge
      @WatchYourselfJorge  4 місяці тому +1

      Okay but nobody reads the manual. You know that, I know that. It's like the Terms and Conditions on software, it's put there as a technicality to allow the company to get away with some otherwise frankly misleading shit

    Screw down chrono pushers waving a victory flag lol
    They are also good for not buggering your movement by stopping you from resetting prior to stopping (not that anyone actually uses a chronograph) the movement (if its not a flyback etc.).

    This guy should talk to actual divers and get a feel for what matters versus some technicality debate. Climate activists hate hunters, but hunters respect nature and have a deep knowledge of animal populations, whereas these activists just like to scream.

    • @WatchYourselfJorge
      @WatchYourselfJorge  4 місяці тому +2

      Okay but I don't know how many more times I need to say the average consumer for you to know this isnt aimed at divers. I know people who've killed watches because they've gone by the figure on the dial or the case back.

    You're really bad at math. Sure you can flail your hands in water and the pressure increases, but it's not enough to make a 3 bar WR to break at the pool.
    You also never referenced how LONG it can be submerged. You can snorkel with 5 bar; you might need to dry it between sessions.
