  • Today I'm finally sharing my review of the ifi audio iphono 3 phono stage. Their latest and greatest and perhaps the best phono stage I've ever heard.
Sorry to ramble a bit and for those new to my channel and my review style, I don't normally talk specs a lot so go to the website and check it out for yourself.

I tell you man after watching this video after so many years of having done it the one thing that stands out to me is that I butchered the name of joão Gilberto, May he rest in peace.
And for those that are curious it's pronounced like this, jo-all but the JO kind of has sort of a SHO sound sort of, to be honest with you it's actually quite hard to describe how to pronounce it correctly but I think I did a pretty good job.

Very good review. Hope you're channel does well. Thanks for this review. You could do videos on other components you currently own and why you picked them/why you like them.

This commentary could not be more clear on the 'real' differences in a fantastic budget Pre vs a professional Pre! Really great job and very much appreciate your delivery style for reviewing this product...thank you, thank you, thank you! You have my attention as should many other enthusiasts wishing to achieve great sound in whatever budget bracket they are in. Getting a good understanding of the differences between dollars spent (when its not just hyped bullshit) is paramount in making the right decisions for growing a great audio system....only wish all reviewers kept in line with this kind of honest and informative approach.
Now, I'll be pondering a means to finding a way to make the budget work for this Pre....dammit! 😂 I will be looking forward to more reviews from you in this new category of upper level equipment to ween the mess in that arena now....but after this review I at least have a bench mark for what I believe might be the best Phono Pre in its price range. Thanks again!

Thanks you know I actually haven't had someone comment on the video in quite a while so I was almost thinking that somebody had forgotten that I had put it up. I'm glad you liked it and hopefully it helps you.

Should I get this or the EAT E-Glo Petit tube phonostage? Using with low output moving coil ania pro cartridge with rega planar 3 into feliks echo ii otl tube amp to kef ls50 wireless speakers. Both options are low-noise which is key for me.

I’ve not heard the EAT but as I’m sure you could tell from my review I really liked the iphono. Now the the eat is a tube design albeit a buffer even still that may get too much of a good thing going with your setup. On the other hand the eat is nice and I absolutely love the knobs and switches for adjusting it versus dip switches. And just casually looking at reviews of it online I would say it’s the better choice. If you want my opinion I would tell you to buy it and see if it works in your system just make sure you get it from somewhere where you can return it.

@@Audiorevue Yeah I’m honestly leaning toward the iFi. It’s $500 cheaper, has class A and a tube like presentation according to the description, and comes with a nice power supply and should eliminate my noise problem. Tube preamp into tube amp could be too much of a good thing. Hard to say though without testing. Appreciate the insight!

Just got mine, the thing is killer. The noise floor is non existent even with the 72db gain setting.

Now from what I understand the Ifi Phono 2 and 3 are the same, aside from the Power X supply and the dip switches being different. And of course the Ifi Phono 3 is double the price.

To your assertion as to the similarity between the predecessor and the successor I cannot speak, having only listened to the latter. However in that regard I believe the footage sums up my enthusiasm quite succinctly.

Nope, the iphono 2 and 3 have different circuitry and the iphono 3 is MUCH better! So much better that i bought a second one despite also having an iPhono 2

RAUL gilberto ? i guess you were kinda of " in the flow" saying Raul instead of joao.. Anyway here in Europe usually they deliver the Phono 3 together with the Power X.... i have a power X on a IFI zen Phono and that sounds absolutely amazing. Still i am considering buying a Phono 3 for my main turntable which is actually "fed" by a Schiit Many with a bespoke Swagman PSU (uvotem Talema transformer, Nichicon capacitors, Dale resistors, Furutech wiring, EMI filter,

Actually I'm not quite sure The correct pronunciation for his name. It's of course Portuguese and I would assume that the J is pronounced similarly to how it is in Spanish.

Anyway what I missed to say is that I was following you earlier and I’ll continue doing. I like your attitude and your “down to earth” approach, as well as your review of the Phono3. I think you nailed it. I will probably upgrade ( as told above) my Mani , have on my smaller system an IFI zen phono with iPower X ( okay that could be replaced by the Schiit/Swagman combo) that does its work more than properly , making an AudioTechnica Vm750Sh sound so sweet... but still I am trying to figure out what could be the best Phono amp in my main system between the Phono 3, the Vertere Phono 1 and an EAT e-glow petit but even after the last one would be my choice, having a Tube amp makes me feel I am not needing for an “added warm” in my sound...
Anyway my great respect for your work. You are doing a great work. Keep on...

    • @Audiorevue

Well I tend to really like Steve Guttenburg and Michael Framer and I feel that I trust what they have to say about a product and Steve Guttenburg and his review of the Mani said something and I'm paraphrasing but said along the lines of the only way to better it is to spend $1000. One of his suggestions was the KC vibe from Sutherland engineering and I've heard nothing but good things about that but at the same time it's the same price as the iPhono3 and I almost think with the sound quality that I experienced with the iPhono3 why not just get that. Plus it's got tons and I mean tons of adjustments and it's compact and in my opinion and quite a few other reviewer's that have heard it say it's as good a phono stage as you're likely to find for 1000 bucks. Matter fact one reviewer stated that in his opinion it was almost as good as his Manley Chinook

Why is everything now called a "stage? It' is no wonder why that many audio nubes are confused as the have no idea what each thing really does Calling something a "stage is meaningless. It's like calling a speaker the listening stage

    • @Audiorevue
      @Audiorevue  Рік тому

I understand, would it be any different calling it a preamplifier?
personally I think it's more clear being called a stage, it's the stage where the turntable signal is amplified.
Plus my reviews that I've done were never really meant for the beginner, it's nice if I can present a product and have it be of interest and further someone's interest in getting into listening to records. but it was never really meant to be for the novice, it's meant for everybody in general, so I don't really see what your complaint is.

@@Audiorevue yes it would... Calling it simply a "stage" does not define its function, However, calling it a pono pre amp does.
BTW I an now 76 yeas old. Decades ago there was no internet but all knew you needed a phno pre amp due to what its function was . .. its name

lol, watch The Audiophile Man video on phono stages. He calls it an amplifier and goes into a rant about it.

Possibly because it is a stage of audio processing. It's not that big a deal, is it? Most will quickly figure out that they are the same thing.

I own a iPhono 3 for more than a year now and just ordered my second one.
I can say with confidence that it is one of THE best sounding phonopres in the price range up to $3K. I had quite a few of these at home and still have one for it's special tubey sound, but in terms of low noise, transient speed, transparency and spatial representation it's very hard to beat.
It's simply flawless and very flexible. I own more than 50 Cartridges and switch regulary and the amp can easily adjusted even to the more exotic Pickups.
I also owned the iPhono 2 (and the 1) and can say it's really a big upgrade if the rest of your setup is transparent enough.
For the full quality level of Playack i recommend having it running for ca. 20 minutes upfront and you should give it a few weeks continous run to burn in the electronics. However its at 90% right out of the box.
Big thumps up from my side for the iphono 3!
my setup can be seen here: www.koerner.de/michael/Aktuelle_Anlagenkonfiguration.html

thanks for sharing I appreciate it, believe it or not I've actually discovered that I sort of like the simplicity of my system now using the built-in phono stage in my rega amp. unlike your system which I checked out I don't have seven turntables I just have one so it's more than sufficient and I only use moving magnet anyway so it works great. but day in and day out if somebody were to ask me what is the best phono stage under a thousand I would still say this one is.

No, just MUCH better looking. It imho has veeeerrrry slightly less transients. But even owning an AnnaLog doesn‘t protect me from thinking that the ipower x is a casemodding competiton entry optically… (Who thinks white powercables on black devices look good, and flashy illumination should be a thing…)
