  • Back on the lathe this week bin doing a bit of fault finding and come across this burnt out so just waiting on a replacement hopefully it works

    The box round the back is the lovolite unit transformer which turns the 440v into 50v or 25 v for the machine light. Is your phase convertor 240v 3 phase output or 400v three phase output? If it is 240 v three phase you will need to connect the motor in delta connection for it to run. Find this on the net or you may have instructions inside the motor terminal box. I do not think the emergency stop will work on 240v three phase as it will be made for 400v three phase.

    Please take all my comments as constructive advice even if they seem condescending.
    Note 1! your latter comments about not needing a E-Stop circuit had me gobsmacked, yes you may be correct in the fact it's your garage and only you use it so you can live as dangerously as you want, but if anyone else were to use this lathe or was injured while you were using it in their presence then you are still legally liable to ensure their safety even if its just curious family members so having such systems in are a must.
    Note 2! Messing about with safety critical systems without actually understanding them is asking for problems and/or risk to yourself and possibly others, I have seen lathes rip arms off and know of a few deaths from them catching clothing and pulling the user around the lathe.
    Your video is confusing for me, you keep saying you have checked this and that and then go on to say your not sure what it is IE the light transformer box, how can you test things if you don't know how they work or there function? You go on to tell us you tested the motor terminals and power was there, if you had the correct power at the motor your main spindle motor would be running yet it isn't, please explain how you tested it and what your results were and how you managed to energise it given you claim it had power?
    It seems you have a very basic understanding but IMHO well below what is needed to be faulting such a machine, you seem to make some assumptions as appose to actually verifying things, you identified the resistor having broken wires, did you test the resistor for it tabulated value, did you insulation test it too? Have you identified its function and checked voltage through so you can establish it is the broken wires inhibiting the control functions, you may get lucky here and it was faulty and replacing it corrects it, the price of a resistor that size is negligible so no real dint in the pocket if its not - PS it may have been damaged by a fault current, be cautious of fitting a new one without clearing or confirming no faults in advance.
    These lathes are very basic in control and power circuit wiring, the later addition of a now dated and non compliant E-Stop control unit shouldn't pose too much of a problem either, you just need to identify how it works, just remember E-Stop circuits may also include limit switches for spindle guards or mechanical housing covers that all may need to be closed before the E-Stop control can be reset, spindle guards may also have override options for inching etc when setting up.
