I lived in Chengdu from 2009 to 2018. In 2009, the only public transit was buses and taxis. By the time I left 6 subway lines were open and there was car sharing. It was incredible, and the changes were actually emotional taxing. Chengdu, and most of China, is very affordable compared to western countries. It gets very expensive when you consider putting children into K-12 private school! 😢
$1050 a month is pretty modest amount to spend in a metropolis such as Chengdu where life is relatively comfortable at a modest cost. Last visited 19 years ago, the city must have changed beyond recognition. I like places where your dollar can stretch quite a bit, Chengdu seems to be one such place in China.
That's the new Chinese dream! In America it's become almost impossible to own a home, and even if I owned a home, I would be taxed massively for it for the rest of my life as if it wasn't my home at all :(
This is definitely useful information. Let just say it's about 8,000 yuan per month. That's slightly higher than home (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). Groceries are comparatively similar to home. I'll be moving to ChengDu this August.
You forgot to mention that the best reason of living in Chengdu is that, you can go to the zoo/panda base to see many cute pandas and their super cute babies!!!😂😂😂
Looks like a beautiful place to stay. I would love to live in Chengdu. My biggest hurdle would be the language barrier. I'm Chinese but don't speak or understand mandarin. At my age I feel it would be such a steep learning curve that it would make my life difficult.
You can easily find native and non-native friends who speak English in Chengdu and English translations everywhere. I am from there. It's becoming more and more international.
You are living alone. If you are living with a partner, or just sharing, that reduces the cost of rent. My flat in Chengdu is 4000, for 100m2, so that's just 2000 each. I rarely drink coffee outside, too expensive, and we normally eat out once a week, unless invited by, or inviting friends. Otherwise we cook at home (actually "I" cook is more accurate...). A week's worth of veggies for two is only about 25 kuai. So our weekly trip to the market is about 125 including meat, again for 2, but then we also buy other stuff online. Also, subway is not the only option. I ride shared bikes for any distance less than 8-10 km, and it's a lot cheaper still. So in the end, my regular monthly budget is less than 5000, for what I consider very comfortable living.
I remember being thrilled at first about buying the new Starbucks Reserve coffee beans, only to be taken aback by the $35 USD price of a 4 oz. package. Good coffee isn’t cheap there, but there was Greenhouse Coffee online and Costco on Taobao.
so this guy keeps buying expensive stuff and I was like no, no one buys head and shoulders for 89 and a bag of rice for 50+ yuan at a Hongqi store; and spending 200 yuan per workout session?? that's ridiculous, my gym membership costs about 30 yuan per visit....so i was like hell no, this is gonna get really expensive, and then, LO AND BEHOLD, HE ONLY ENDS UP SPENDING
i think for similar lifestyle in sydney it will cost you at least $5000 - 1 bed in city $2500 permonth , Transports train $150, Grocery $500, Coffee 3x per day ($300 per month) , eating out $25 per ea (average) , Internet $60 , gym $100 ,
Hello! This video was uploaded 3 years ago and I just wonder if there were any drastic changes to cost of the living or if the prices remained relatively the same? Thank you so much for this video, it was so nice to see this wonderful city!~
In smaller cities in China, you can even buy a small decent apartment for just RMB 20,000 ! That's equivalent to USD 3,100 - !! That's why there's no homeless people in China.
Wow so affordable versus outrageous costs in Vancouver Canada ...rent $2500 a month plus utilities..food and everything is super expensive ...I earn six figures and feel poor here...can’t wait to visit and spend some time in Chengdu
Hi! I wanna ask how the weather conditions affect your daily life in Chengdu? Does it rain a lot or is it mostly cloudy? When I researched about the weather quality, I found out air pollution is an important problem. Cheers!
@@borderlesslife Haha I thought so too. Who shops at a convenience store if they're trying to show off how cheap a city is, they're always at least 50% more, maybe double or triple!
Well then in Vancouver, you would spend twice your monthly cost of living in Chengdu for rental alone. 😂😂😂 You pay $500/month for that rather cozy apartment in Chengdu; you'd be looking at $2000/month in Vancouver. (Internet is ~$100/month. Cellphone ~$85/month.)
If you rented that is. If you buy, the real estate has been appreciating approximately 5-25% (sometimes as much as 50% during the peak) annually - so you pretty much get living expenses free, if you plan on selling it.
You show the cost for "skin care" but you don't bother to shave. Don't you think that that is ironic? If you recalled cared about how you looked you would not look like a bum who just jumped off the back end of a freight train near Tucumcari, New Mexico!
I think Chengdu develp Département invited him. It makes no sens to say ccp all the time. If you are taiwanese i forgive you because you are likely to be brainwashed

When I studied in Nanchang(南昌), my rent was 7000元 (about $1000 USD) for a complete 12 months.
我在广东的四线城市,每个月支出成本只不到你的三分之一,但是我过得很幸福!
I am the local in Chengdu so I don’t have to pay rent or mortgage. My cost of living would be $300/ month. But I spend lots of money on traveling.

How about Nanchong? Is it a fourth-tier city?
