I had tons of hope to buy an interceptor until test rode one and immediately after my whole perception has changed and was like... No way! From quality of parts/materials to fit and finish to design of every part was underwhelming! Then with a heavy heart for extra cost test rode T100 and immediately was like... Yes please! Take my money! Everything was as it should be or better from quality, performance, design & etc
It is the favourite in the UK because Royal Enfield prices are extremely low there. RE cannot compete in the EU where proper Japanese motorcycles are cheaper and the RE showrooms are filled with 2021 models.
@@fuglbird Thats not all of it...the brand has an extensive history of being a top brand back in the day along with the likes of BSA and Norton...so it is an easier connect for folk in the UK!
While they argue between these two classics, I saw the light and sold my interceptor and bought the ultimate modern classic for this 60 year old who has great memories of the big fours of the 70's. Introducing my 2016 CB1100EX. Its a dream.
In the seventies Honda's big inline four was a 750. The GL1000 was a boxer. Congratulations anyway. It is a very nice bike. I am 66 and love touring. I opted for the fuel economy of a 2017 SV650. The price per km is the same as it was on my GT550 back in 1978.
11:56 i never took mine back to Triumph dealer - once was enough - didn’t care about me, charged me a lot and let me ride home before telling me (a week later by email!) that my breaks were down to minus 15% AND THEN i got the pads double checked by non-triumph and (as i thought) the pads have thousands of miles left on them. they also told me on the phone when i made the appointment that i couldn’t test ride a bike while i was there or as they put it ‘we don’t let people just go out on jollies’. i was very embarrassed. i have a 2 year old Bobber am a 50 year old man taking it to Triumph for service. i AM YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE! treated like an inconvenience. no one was around. didn’t try to talk to me about bikes in the shop i was looking at. didn’t point out the sale they were having on clothes. didn’t call me when bike was completed. so i won’t be buying a bike from them either.
Very very odd. The dealership here in Stockholm is great and super helpful. This morning in fact, I had the MOT for my bike and right away. The guy testing saw that my half light was broken which was a fail. He tested everything else and everything was OK but I called immediately the Triumph garage and they said just bring it by and they fitted me in and fixed it and I managed to get back to the MOT guy before lunch and he passed the bike.
It is worth it to find a good dealer before you buy a motorcycle. I have had some bad experiences too. I am now 66 and for the rest of my life I will have a Japanese motorcycle.
As for which bike is ... better looking .... it's the eye of the beholder.... I've have .. 650 Triumph, 650 BSA, Xs650's (3) and even the fabled Triton (750)..parked in my garage... all classic lines. Handsome machines .... I bought a 2020 Interceptor.... for what it wasn't, not so much for what it is. The value was a major factor .... it's a great " 650 " machine .... many manufactures built a 650 for the pass 80 years.... RE got it right. The $$$$'s I saved will fund my summer fun.. for years. 😎
The Triumph is lovely but i reckon the Enfield enticed more people back onto two wheels. Inexpensive new price on the Enfield means bikes only a couple of years old and with negligible miles for really sensible prices. That's a big draw no matter what else is available on the second hand market.
Personally I'd rather a reliable bullet proof bike for a little extra. Had both. My 2008 triumph bonny with a few very minor cheap mods makes the Trumpy twice the bike. Just my opinion
Nice common man’s comparison. I’m old enough to to remember Bike magazine doing a similar comparison between the real Bonneville and the Yamaha XS650, back in the day. Lol
Most technical stats were wrong🤦🏻♂️ and i still I love it😂 47.8hp,52nm, 205kg wet🤭 Also, new interceptor 650 can be had with alloy wheels, adjustable levers, led front light and blacked out engine and pipes.
hi, yes it was a loose technical comparison , more a bit of fun really. glad you still enjoyed it, its fun to put a bit of humour into the video's. The Enfield was always on an uphill battle with the bonny, but i think it gives a good account of itself. its a bike im loving owning and running around on. theirs still nothing id change if for.
@@theartisanrider472 the newer version is practical, but it lacks the charm of old school version that you and I have, When it comes to power Royal enfield thought about Indian market first and 100kmph to 120 kmph is sort of the sweet spot on Indian highways (motorcycles are not allowed on expressway in India with speed limit of 140kmph and those are Access controlled motorways)
heh, had the exact same feeling - slapped a different handlebars and pegs on it and she is perfect now - don't even have the "wooden arse" anymore- even swapped back the original seat
Both great bikes. 8 year old bonnie compares favourably to a fairly new Interceptor so they are probably the same money. Bonnie is the standard of which all retros are measured. The T120 variant nails it.
Clunky gear change on the Interceptor? That does surprise me ! I've ridden a dozen different ones and they've all been buttery smooth .....including my own !
i think jamies experience is mainly with the bonny, so his experience with the Enfield would be coloured by a sample of one. i totally agree the interceptor gearbox is very good, as are all my Enfield boxes. but its fair to say the bonny really is slick. i was actually surprised at how more refined the liquid cooled bonny was than my air cooled ones. regardless of that, i love my interceptor. top bike.
@theartisanrider472 I rode both bikes and I'm happy with my choice , I thought the handling on the Interceptor was a little better probably down to the Harris design frame . The suspension got overwhelmed when you pushed it , had no confidence in the tyres , didn't like some of the grey powder coating , indicators were hideous but 2 main factors made me buy it ....1. It had more scope for me to personalise it ( in my eyes ) as the Triumph was undeniably more "finished" 2. I didn't want a 900cc bike ! It was never about money as I had the means to buy both , and I've spent a few quid on it and I'm still nowhere near the price of the T100 at the time , depreciation meant bugger all because it isn't going anywhere & I still get immense pleasure riding it and sitting in the garage looking at it with a cuppa ! Must put it on the weighbridge at work sometime , I'm sure it'll be under 200kg ! 🤔
This summer I bought my first big bike. Was thinking between T100, RE Interceptor 650, Kawa W800, or Moto Guzzi V7. Comparing just RE 650 with T100, even though Interceptor is more than 10kg lighter, if felt much more heavy when I sat on one. It's probably because of the ground clearance being higher on the Interceptor by over an inch. It makes the bike feel top heavy. That plus 2 inches shorter wheelbase, makes the bike look like a scrambler to me. Bonneville silhouette looks much more classy and pretty to me. Also, T100's engine is a peach, the RE doesn't even come close. 80Nm at 3250rpm, compared to Interceptor 52Nm or so, and at higher revs. It also consumes less fuel, which is just ridiculous, since it's 900cc against 650cc... Plus the fit and finish on the Bonneville. The clocks, the headlight, even the fuel cap, and it all scream quality. So I went for the used T100 instead of the new Interceptor. No regrets so far. And that engine sound is just amazing, even with the stock exhaust.
I own a boneville t100 and I just sold the RE Interceptor to buy the triumph. Because?. Well, because the Triumph has a higher quality of finish, it has more engine, it has a range of colors that for me is more beautiful and the driving position is also more comfortable. That said, the RE is a very good option if you can't afford something more expensive. Greats from Gran Canaria, Canary Island, Spain.
The Inter is much more beautiful, the polished engine cases and the engine itself looks a lot better than on the Triumph. 3 Grand is a lot but I would not buy the Triumph if I had shit loads of money. The looks of the Inter is what influences my decision....
RE is so cheap and easy to customize, and way cheaper to buy, cheaper cost of maintenance (but more often), his line is so pure, power at low rev, buttery clutch ...great video
What a great video - lovely. Two blokes talking bikes, have empathy for each other’s perspective and can see the beauty in each bike. Fabulous - you’ve gained a subscriber - and yes I’ve owned a T100 for over 20 years now so I may be a little biased.
thanks for the lovely feedback, makes it all worthwhile. its all about enjoying the process of putting the episodes together, if your genuinely having fun, it shows. thanks again.
I do all of my own maintenance. The RE has dead simple screw and nut tappet adjusters. Also, the RE upswept exhausts are out of the way for chain slack adjust. Also, no coolant system to look after. 3 year warranty...
They are both fantastic bikes, i'm an enfield meteor 350 owner myself (for now, i'm getting the super meteor soon), the only thing i'm interested in is: how do hey roll in windy conditions? And to end the vitriolic comment section to quote jeremy chalamet in The King: "ON ME!!!"
I sure wish Enfield would up the ante a bit with a 750 or 850. Nothing against the 650, it's a good value if you don't want something larger. They've created many bike style variations around the 650 engine but nothing at the level of the larger Triumphs. Sure, you can get big bore kits, cams, change the mapping, etc. But for that layout, why not just buy a second-hand Triumph in the first place?
A little bit unfair in one way - the 30 - 50 test; the T100 has a 900cc engine vs a 650cc in the RE - a whole lot more torque and Cu.in to pull away with. Love the bikes and the comparison! Subscribed though :) BTW, I have an R1200RT as well as the Interceptor - haha! The Interceptor became a different beast with the Enfield Precision cans on and the DNA air filter as well. - Try them out!! Even better fuel economy on a longish steady journey! And, my gear changes are butter smooth, still and mine is 2019.
yep i was always on a loser with the acceleration, i was hoping jamie might miss a gear and id win by default. love the RT, i rode the Pan european in an earlier episode, these tourers are just over engineered pieces of art, fabulous.

Test rode a T120 and it was heavy and not as agile in comparison to my Interceptor and gear changes were much better on the Interceptor than the Bonneville.
yep, totally fair point. i was slightly limited due to only having Jamie's bike available, but it did give an owners perspective, which meant we could sort of say what we liked without upsetting a dealer. having said that though, i was surprised at how much more refined this water-cooled bonny is than my air-cooled one. i have access to a new t120 so might compare those at some point.
