Boston, Massachusetts Gun Rights? Are there any?

- Recently took a trip to Boston, Massachusetts and was missing my conceal carry weapons. Took a look at reciprocity laws and what everything looked like for conceal carry in general for MA and was really quite surprised that gun laws are pretty much the same as California. Crazy to think that the center of our countries most liberating movements is also one of the most anti-gun now. Food for thought...
Actually Mass is misunderstood by many. The state issues permits unrestricted to those without felonies after being sued for practices you speak of. Some towns were abusive of policy but as far as I know that all stopped after the law suits. all you need is a gun safety class certificate. You don't have to test , neither written or shooting. There are no laws against open carry here either so a gun showing while concealing is not against the law as some believe. And we do have a castle law, you are not bound by law to escape as a comment says but you do need to prove that the danger was either life threatening or great bodily harm was about to happen to you. I'm a state police certified instructor in Mass and I'm amazed at how little LTc holders educate themselves about their rights and responsibilities !
Shmick Shmudney Unfortunately he is correct. In 1994 the laws were again changed and at that time any misdemeanor that could carry a sentence of one year or more were included in the disqualifications. With the sudden impact being such a huge impact and the fact that previous Massachusetts law nullified Dui records after 10 years the courts had to clarify exactly when the change took place. The law was changed in September of 1994 therefore the ruling was set from that point moving forward. Your unfortunate mistake was 2001 , well after the 9/94 cut off ruling. I’m so sorry for this and I thank you for your service. I don’t think you would win but I suggest you speak to an attorney that specializes in Massachusetts gun laws to see if he can help. It is my understanding that the law applies to handgun LTC’s and not FID CARDS, but I’m not a lawyer. Good luck and keep me informed if your successful.

+ThaFeesh dicey response here.....it depends. Not prepared to give law interpretation advice, but depending on local jurisdictions it could be possible to carry a knife, etc. but you'd really need to check with local law enforcement to know for sure. Prior to TX LTC law being passed, it only covered concealment of guns, but since LTC passed some interpret that to mean automatic knives and such are covered. Again, check with a law enforcement officer. At the end of the day those are who you'll answer to if interpretation of the law does not align.
It's the same way here in Jersey. We can't do squat here except the range and immediately back home, stopping can result in felony charges for making unnecessary deviations. I hope all who live in free states appreciate the freedom and take advantage never become brain washed like the voters in my state
+Black Elephant Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. Here in Texas it's just uber simple, and though we have citizens that don't appreciate it, the government realizes there are inalienable rights, which they fight for. Our recent conversion to constitutional carry which allows the open carrying of hand guns with a valid permit (easy to get if you know guns and can pass the test and shooting proficiency) really illustrates the state's willingness to accept our justifications for it. Whether you open carry or not, the law changed a lot of the dynamic for how one carries because previously it was more difficult with printing and such, but now if I accidentally show my weapon while bending down or something, it's not punishable. Really, it all comes down to the people's choice to elect officials that support their rights. It's sad to see some states take such an unnecessary negative view of guns in general. Proud to be a Texan in this day and age.
The old loyalists are still in New England, and they hold power in Massachusetts. They badly want New Hampshire back.

I live in mass and it is terrible how even self defense and "castle" laws are so restricted, for example we cannot shot unless we make an attempt to run first I mean that's so stupid! Not only that but we cannot fire at a robber if they are running away!
That is the single most repeated wrong information in mass. you most certainly can defend your life with a firearm in your home without running away . You better have been in immediate danger of loss of your or your loved ones lives or great bodily injury. Shooting a fleeing felon is a different law and there are exceptions to make a good shoot or a bad one. I would recommend you take an advanced LTC class for use of force in the home and another for use of force outside the home. Mass firearms school teaches the class. Actual law enforcement instructors. 100. per class money well spent. I'm an instructor myself .
