I never once in my life accepted to work for free. I got pushed to work longer hours but was compensated when I was younger, now, I won't budge. Had a job that required me to show up at the security gate and then my boss would drive us down to the job site which took 15-30 minutes each way. He saw me marking my hours one day and was like, 'We don't pay for driving, that's on you." I just stared at him and was like, "Are you stupid?" Because I didn't want to get in a big fight as I was only 19 at the time I just mentally logged any time earned and spread it out over the weeks as our hours varied based on the tasks needing done, sometimes 10, sometimes 12, sometimes 16. It was based usually on the weather, if we could work we worked. So I just started rounding in my favor anytime to make up for lost hours he tried to take from me for being on the job site. So worked till 6:03, I put 6:15 until I made up my hours, he didn't check all the time so that's how I was able to get everything I worked for. If it had really become an issue I would have probably fought harder. I HATE doing free labor and even at 19 I wouldn't have done it, I just found the easiest solution back then. Your time is your time and is valued at your time = as someone else's time. They don't have MORE value over yours. So if Karen wants to take leave because her kid has soccer match and you had leave first and you were going to go home and watch netflix, don't get bullied into her time is more value because kids. It's yours, you worked for it, you earned it. Hate people who don't plan for events but try to bully you into doing something you don't want to.
You do realize, that when you get employed by a employer they can change your hours for any reason including meetings. You unemployed aren't you 😂😂😂😂 if you arrive at 8am you get paid from until you get off . They have labor laws. If your salaried tough fucking luck. They can work you whenever they want.
I used to work in South Korea, the realm where overtime pay does not exist. If your hours are 9-5, or whatever time you’re scheduled, your employer will still make you come in early or stay late to make sure you get all your tasks completed. Also in Korean culture, it is considered rude to go home before the boss does. So we would have to stay late sometimes until they punched out.
Agreed. I have one meeting each time we get a new build, we go over all the specs, and stuff, and then that is it. when you have a question, we jut ask whoever we need to. Meetings used to be important, but now we have technology that offers much better options, such as instant communication with anyone
I've never been to a meeting that they couldn't have just covered it all in a email and saved us all, a bunch of time. I've had jobs, for instance, that are closed on Sundays and they've wanted us to come in and have meetings. I've never done it a bunch of people kind of followed my lead on that and the company just stopped doing it all together. Don't work for them anymore. But when I left they were just writing messages on the boards and sending emails and texts, it worked better that Way and you didn't have any employees showing up on Monday. Resentful that their weekend had gotten cut short for a relevant BS that could have been covered like I said in other methods.
From what i understand, talking to older managers and business people. Most meetings are just time wasters to justify their positions. Most people finish their work hours before they get to go home. The film office space covered this fact years ago.
I grew up being taught that going above and beyond for your employer was the way to live. It didn't matter what you had to sacrifice, you weren't considered a "hard worker" or a "devoted employee" unless you gave the company everything you had. Today I can see this for the scam it was and I'm thrilled that the younger generation is standing up for themselves and making time for themselves instead of being blindly devoted to a job. Because in the end, your job dosen't give a shit about you and if they can squeeze every drop of life from you while giving you nothing in return, they will.
Go above and beyond only for the bosses who earned your respect. It’s totally disrespectful for any boss to ask you to come in early for a meeting just one day prior to the meeting. If they can’t respect your designated time off, then it’s fair that you disrespect their designated work time by giving them the bare minimum effort. And I’m saying this as a 41-yr-old. My own generation wasn’t raised to gladly put up with that BS.
the issues is companies used to offer retirement packages where if you worked for them for like 30 years you got money for the rest of your life, which was a huge benefit for staying in the company as long as possible, we dont have that anymore, and its exteremely hard to progress in a company these days, so your only option is stay with a company, build experience, and then leave and try to get that promotion from a different company for a higher pay, because there isnt any reason for me to stay
Employer wants you in by 8, but the paycheck starts at 9. That’s the way the logic of these companies seem to operate on. Stick to the hours you’re scheduled, don’t give away any of your time for free.

Some employers really abuse work hours. I have a friend trying to get a job right now. He got one in sales and worked 3 whole days for them before they said that he wasn't cut out for the job. He didn't get paid a penny for any of the work.

The corporate people at a certain coffee shop I used to work in expected all employees to be available and on call 24/7 without being in the contract to be available at all times since they're employees used to call off most of the time. They hire high school students and college kids at the highest rates. When I completed my hourly rate shift and there was a call off I had been asked to do a double shift and when I denied "you need to be a team player and be dedicated to the job". Up until April of 2023 I endured every little thing and I left for a company that respects days off and employee's mental/physical health. The old employer's Director of operations last words to me were "we will see you in three months since people don't last long where you are going", well it's going to be a year this April since I left and I have a more... important role in that company while getting paid more, traveling to other stores within their corporate market and most importantly earning a 401k since the other company I was working for never had my 401k set up when I first got a higher up position that included one back in 2018.
When she was talking about salary, she meant that it isn't just "9-5". It is whatever is specified in the contract, I work salary, so I get the same amount of income every month regardless of the hours I work as long as I complete the duties outlined in the contract. Sometimes I might work a 50 hour week, sometimes I might work a 20 hour week, so it all evens out (though MAX hours are in the contract). I am allowed to make my own hours, but some people might have specified hours, like9-5, and if they have a quarterly 8 am meeting, it would be listed in the contract as a required duty, so you HAVE to attend. You are paid to do what is outlined in the contract, not per hour, and it sounded like that meeting was in the employment contract, so he would have broken the contract. It does all differ between companies, but that is the basics. If he was paid hourly, then a totally different thing.
Hey, I work salary too. But the company I work for, they made us log our time and each week, we must work at least 40 hours. So, even there are weeks we might go above 40 hours, there's never under 40 hours. I think what you said make sense. Yet, quite some companies not working that way.
@@excitegugu Yeah, it all depends on the company and the state. Salary just means a set pay rate, the details can vary quite a lot. I'm in San Francisco, and I've learned lately that our labor laws are quite different from the rest of the country, even on Salary, time 1/2 has to be paid for anything over 8 hour, and 12 hour is a max workday. I know it is worked into salary somehow, but don't understand how. I think where you live also influences how you react to this, a lot of the country is still at a min wage of $7.25/hour which makes 1 extra hour VERY important to some people, but then other places have higher min wages, It is $18.07 here, which would make people more able to afford to not care about 1 hour of pay. @@HicSvntDracones I am in CA too. I am in Los Angeles. My past experience has been vary due to each companies policy. One company I worked for, even I was on salary. They gave us "1.5 comp time" per each extra hour we work, which was very nice. But most salary job only give us the fixed salary without anything extra. So, yeah.... Work 40 hr is min, but nothing extra if you have to work OT. Also, they are not happy when we need to work OT, we need to get the management to give us hours to do that that. It's like, I need to BET for them to let me work for free, because I want to finish the project.
@@excitegugu I worked in a similar place. And it is dependent on industry rather than individual company. Most employers only car if you don't meet the hours, but don't rush to send you home if you do over your hours, especially if you are salaried and don't get overtime. You're well within your right to walk away during the allotted finish times. However, if tasks haven't been done that have been outlined in a contract, that's where it gets messy. And in that case, it's really up to you to get it done on time to avoid the problem. That being said and if everything goes smoothly, sometimes it is simply just the daunting case that you have to go to your manager and say "I'm leaving". It takes a lot of confidence to do that especially when you don't know what the reaction will be. I never found the courage to do so and I know many others who are the same. There are two sides of the coin. Some people abuse the 'right' some are too uncomfortable facing it but choose to moan later. Also, some employers respect the confidence required to do such a thing, others genuinely resent it and it can mean the difference between a promotion or a dismissal, which when you have a family to feed is a deterrent from saying something in-of-itself. This issue has never been black and white.

Salaried employees don't have fixed hours. I was a salaried employee (engineer) my entire working life. It has advantages and disadvantages. Even though there is a typical start time you would be expected to be available when needed. But, since you don't punch a time clock, if you need to come in late or leave early occasionally, as long as you don't abuse it, you can and it doesn't affect your pay. You may or may not get overtime if you work extra hours and if you do then it's usually straight time rather than time and a half. But your salary is typically much higher and if there is a bonus program you're usually eligible for that which gives you an interest in the success of the company. In the long run typically most salaried employees make out much better than hourly employees. Just about all company executives and professionals are salaried.
Employees who are on a salary do not have set work hours some weeks they can hardly work and other weeks they could work all week but no matter their hours worked they always get the exact same paycheck!
Salary pay is actually usually much higher than hour based exactly because they are paying you beyond just the hour. Like it's assume the times you work there is already covered.

I used to work as a building manager on a salary concept & let me tell you….i got totally burned out!!!! 5 years and underpaid. I now work hourly from my home and I’m paid much more and my company pays me 150% for any overtime I do and it’s always if I want to do overtime. Be careful about the salary based jobs☠️
When an employee is being paid salary there is usually a contract stating their duties to earn their salary. They are given specific tasks and quotas that need to be performed in a given time. Meetings would be mandatory no matter the time. The thing is that they will have to work until their duties and quotas are completed. Sometimes they finish ahead of time and once it’s finished they are free to leave, on the other hand if it takes longer, then they need to work more than what they are paid for. Most often they will work more hours rather than less and it’s in this way that the employer benefits the most from salaried employees. A person on salary can end up being paid less than $5 an hours depending on how much time it takes to complete their duties. Never go on salary because when you do you’re basically at their beck and call.
Salary opens more doors to heftier benefits and leeway when time off is needed, though, and there's an unspoken rule around misuse of employee time in good companies.

As much as I hate getting up at 5:30 to make it to my 8am shift, it's what I agreed to with my job and I do my best to arrive early. It sucks ngl and I wish I could also be a UA-camr and not have to do this. I don’t believe she was contradicting herself. She essentially explained that if you work on a salary and it’s clearly defined as a 9 to 5 you don’t and shouldn’t need to work before or after those hours. However in that specific situation the consultant who makes 100k-120k base most likely does not work on a salary and is told before signing the contract that there are quarterly meetings for all new hires which include people in other continents. 8 am eastern time just happened to be best but the time will obviously be different elsewhere. TL;DR: Don’t work before or after your work hours. The employee mentioned in the rant from a different employer was most likely not working on a 9 to 5 salary and was told before signing that those meetings happen quarterly. With all of that said BEWARE of bad employers that do often try to take advantage of you to work before and after hours.

Did 20 years in the Navy. Meetings about meetings. Was a contractor for the government, meetings about meetings with the government. 9 out of 10 meetings are about the 10th meeting. Most people in leadership positions use their position to justify their role in the company/government/entity. This is because they are not qualified and should never have been allowed in that position. If you feel the need to micro manage, either your staff needs training, or you need training. Where I work now we have meetings like you would expect. A meeting about a particular requirement/need/adjustment; also the meeting has a point, you have an issue that needs resolution, the meeting is to discuss the topic and come up with a plan of action.
As a salary employee in engineering, sometimes morning meetings r required to keep everyone on the team on track. If u r hourly, u will be paid for that extra hour, if u r salary, sometimes extra hours r necessary
I absolutely hate meetings, but depending on your job, sometimes you need to make an extra sacrifice here and there. I had an 8AM meeting with the team from India recently. I could’ve told them to shove it, and either stay later (it’s 9PM their time) or just figure it out in their own, but I went, and it was an inconvenience but wasn’t too bad. How important is the meeting and how frequently do they demand extra time from you? Have boundaries, and if possible, leave companies that have unreasonable asks for your time, but at the same time, if you’re rigidly 9-to-5 at a corporate job no exceptions, then don’t be surprised if the company decide they don’t need your services anymore.
This is what I said. Im an IT Administrator working a 9-5 and there are always going to be circumstances that may cause you to come in a bit earlier or leave a bit later. If you can't deal with it and you ONLY work your hours then don't bother working in the service industry or corporate. Go do some gig work or become a contractor that way you can set your own hours
I been trying to get a job also and 2 of the jobs say they are hiring for a specific position but once I’m at the job they change my position to something else I didn’t apply for and that’s super annoying I just don’t show up the next day.
That happened a lot when I was younger in my teens and early 20s. Don't just not show up the next day. Have a conversation with your boss first if you didn't start at the position discussed at your interview or orientation. In my experience, if you put up with it and learn how to be good at more than one position and seek out the knowledge to learn more, you'll be valued and relied on and that's when you can negotiate a promotion or a raise. You won't be considered expendable anymore. When you prove you'll be more reliable than others and are willing to learn more than just your position, you're taken way more seriously. But if that's not what you want to do, let it be known to your boss or employer.
@-dfh-866 thats a good way to get taken advantage of in this day and age it happened to me working at an exotic animal distribution facility the boss man caught on that i had construction experience and was a hard worker and would always try to get me to work late and do other things outside my job description and things that he would have to hire a licensed contractor for and whenever i would do it he would still not pay me anything extra for it ever. I understood after about 2 years of that job when i quit that this is why so many other gen z guys dont want to work for anyone else or even work at all because you always end up getting screwed over by greedy bosses trying to profit or save thousands of dollars using your hard unpaid labor. if you are on a salary, its different from working hourly, while on a salary, it doesn't matter how many hours you work because your pay won't increase or decrease because it isn't based on the amount of hours you put in. its a fixed pay, so if someone was scheduled to work 9 to 5 but was on a salary and they told them to come in at 8 for a meeting, they would still get paid the same. thats what the lady was referring to.
I ran my own construction business for over 25 years and the only meeting I ever had with my employees was once a year to see where they wanted to go for the Christmas piss up.
I had a coworker who worked for the corporation for 27 years. She was a hard worker and extremely friendly. Because of budget cuts, they wanted her to leave by making her life miserable. Her life was so miserable that she finally snapped and they had a reason to fire her. Now she's working at Target making low wages, she use to make $145k a year and because she had no college degree due to her not needing it at the time she started working in the 70s , she had no strong credentials. Eventually they fired me too. This system is evil. Im done with money!

I have 3 people that report to me. I take my employees time very seriously. If I need to schedule a meeting outside of regular hours, I clear it with them beforehand. That being said, some employees are all about going above and beyond and that is appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed.
I am Gen X. Once I got called into work on a few hours notice. I said, "No." They said if I did not show I would be fired. I had other appointments booked which could not be rearranged in a short period of time. Also, it is not my responsibility to shift my life for another person's regardless of situation. I understand people have things going on, but so do I. I said, "I quit." They told me I was not allowed to quit, especially on such short notice. That made me laugh... I belong to no entity, corporate or otherwise. We are not beholden to our employers. It is not acceptable for managers to threaten employees on their day off. It is ludicrous. My current bosses understand that I never respond to my phone, so don't even try. My time is absolutely mine. There is no compromise.

Salary is a scam. I was a salaried assistant manager at a pizza place for 2 years. Busted my butt cuz I loved it and got burned in the end, but my salary was $750 a week. The catch was I had to work 50 hours a week. So I basically made a glorified $15/hr and didnt get overtime period. They told me it was because we would get a biweekly bonus but it wasnt guaranteed, could be taked away for whatever reason our district manager came up with, and often wasn't much anyways. Any hours I worked over my 50 (I averaged at least 52 every week, sometimes close to 60) was just free labor. I also had to answer my phone and be prepared to come in anytime my higher ups asked, even it was my day off. Only exception was if I took pto. Tldr: salary is a scam, stay hourly.
It is, I sold cars for two dealers and my salary that I earned had to be returned from the commission I earned and if I didn't earn enough commission to return it then I would be let go.

The problem is if you cave, they will continue to expect it and then all of a sudden you've "effectively" voided your right to protest. If you worker changes your hours or messes with your workload, and you don't complain about it, you are seen as accepting it, and it's now part of your job. Employment law is dumb as ass. This honestly happened to a guy I work with who does a different job, he's on payroll side of things. They told him "You're doing all the payroll for all the new agency workers too now" He said, "no thank you, I already have my job that I have a contract for, if you want more work from me, pay me more, or give me better hours" They threatened to fire him, and instantly the next day he had a letter drafted by his lawyer. It outlined his formal protest to the illegitimate changes to his contract. Sufficed to say, they company backed down so hard, so fast, he worked there for give or take 40 years, he was a fucking wizard at his job, top tier. Every time he was on vacation, the whole place was botched and payroll was fucked for a solid 2 weeks after, the morons they got to fill in for him were terrible.
If you have a corporate meeting quarterly and it was made known during the interview process, then you are obligated to go. It’s part of the contract you agreed upon. You can ask for a bonus for coming into work 1 hr early 4 days a year. But they’re probably not going to give that to you. Either give 4 hours of your year to know what your company is doing, or work that 9-5 hourly job where they really don’t care. Salary jobs come with fine print. It’s your job to read it.

Not sure if that's a genuine question or sarcasm but for people who genuinely want to know: Everything has to be recorded to protect yourself and prevent people from taking advantage of situations or people they deem weaker than them. Humans have become so untrustworthy that You should be recording yourself Every time you leave your house at this point. Documentation is extremely important in any and all situations
Regardless if you are salaried or not, the message of the fact you should come tomorrow at an earlier hour should be done at least 24 hours before when you are supposed to come because you need to reschedule that day's appointments or entire plan for the day. I don't know how it is in the USA but where I live after 5 PM, even after 3 PM you are unable to reschedule appointments. And depending on the premise, you may not only get banned from using the services but also get fined for not coming on time or not messaging a day before (you cannot reach them after 5 PM and they do not read emails for the same reason because no one's there). Now the fun part: what if someone does not jump onto E-mail or turns off the work phone (because no one in the right might use their private phone nowadays anyway to keep their privacy, at least in here)? Over here, unless you are an emergency worker (firefighter, police, etc.), you have zero obligations to respond to work-related e-mails and telephones, and even if you respond to the call you have full right to refuse without further repercussions (at least done legally).
Salaried basically meams you get paid a set amount regardless of the hours. It means on slow times if you work less you still get paid the same, but during busy times if you work more youre still paid the same. A lot of employers dont want you to know that theres never a slow period. (At least in retail) theres some jobs where thats a sweet deal, if you know you can finish all your work early then youre good.
At my last job I've used to wake up at 4am, I used to hate waking up so early & I'm not even a morning person at all , That I've noticed that I was started to become more depressed. Im 15 and have no work experience. I tried my hardest to go above and beyond for my employer, but it seemed that no matter what i did, it was never enough. So black incel small D guy here and this is how things are for me. I'm abgraphic designer for a real estate brokerage. I have to commute to work and the hours are from 8 to 5. Since day one I asked for 7 to 4 because I wake up at 2 am to go to the gym and coming in the evenings at 5 were traffic heavy, so 4 works. If I get to work before 7, like around 6:20, I have time to wash my car and chill before I start day. I put all my socializing time, church, deep sleep and so on for the weekends or vacation time. I pledged in college so I am used to waking up early and going to bed around 7 or 7:30. This works for me and I've been doing this for years. I used to work 2 jobs and made time for everything. I'm a 89 baby and a former immigrant turned proud American. There is a fine line between making excuses, being lazy and taking on too much of a load. Finding a balance is key, but if you don't try to make something work then what's the point? Find a job that works for you or get a better mentality with the mindset to do greatness. Simple.

I used to work at Kroger where I was often asked to work before and after my shifts. They would pay me for the extra time, but also made it clear that I didn’t have to work extra if it wasn’t scheduled.
I don't particularly agree with the point (I stopped a few seconds into you talking about it) that "all meetings are useless". A lot of meetings could have been an email, but when we are talking about new features, which provider to go with, how to integrate them with our system, etc, there needs to be a in-real-time response over Zoom or in person to get to the bottom of it. Otherwise, it's an async back and forth over Slack which takes a lot longer.
Salaried vs Hourly: Salery means you work for this set amount of dollars per month/week/year, whatever it is your contract states and that you agreed to. But, this involves being on call the entire time. 24/7. That is ALWAYS the agreement you make when agreeing to Salary instead of hourly. Blackout times that you set to not be on call should be negotiated and written into the contract when deciding what that salary is. One of the biggest reasons I am still an associate instead of management where I have worked for 9yrs. I am not about to be worked to the bone and feel as if I am not being paid right for it.
I do agree that if you want your staff to start work earlier, you should let them off earlier as well. Why do corporations like to milk employees and not pay them at all? I used to work at a big corporation in which my jobscope works around the clock. APAC will handover to EMEA to NAM and then the cycle repeats. As I was in APAC we were always expected to attend night calls at 10PM once every fortnight. Or if we could not finish our work during work hours we needed to log back in at night. Once my EMEA colleague told me I should not be working until so late. But all these translated to nothing as people expect you to function normally at work the following day as if the night calls didn't happen...
( i am a caregiver for people with special needs ) i was hired to work 6 am to 2pm Monday through Friday and was never told anything about any mandatory overtime. the other day my boss said " if this person doesn't work weekends then i am going to have to implement mandatory over time meaning yall have to work a 6am to 6pm on weekdays and possibly weekends " i looked at my coworker after reading that text and said i refuse to work weekends or past 2pm i have a life outside of work its not my fault, not to mention weekend shift gets paid more per hour but they said we wouldn't get paid weekend wage if we work weekends.
*"SALARIED EMPLOYEES"* are usually on a high level of pay with many benefits and the hours are flexible as required. I worked at a large shipping company back in the early 2000's as a salaried Part-time Supervisor (6-10pm) and I was told during the hiring process that twice a month I was to be part of a phone-in conference call from home with all the other supers from each major hub in the country. The conference would last an hour sometimes more and even though I was salaried I was paid for that extra time away from my regular work hours. All other companies that I've worked as an hourly employee, all meetings were held during working hours.
Also, I can sometimes understand the 'you wont get as far in your career' BUT from my experience its always been retail/fast food/mcdonalds employees that get this shit treatment, if you are actually working a more professional jobs they treat you with respect. As such, it does not harm your career in any way to say no against these types of bosses in the "low level" jobs (for a lack of better wording, not to disrespect anyone in them of course). In any case, its also partly about sending a message of not being a pushover. If you understand the Nacho $20 short 'Agreed amount or no deal' clip from better call saul, you'll understand. If you are always willing to look nice and acquiesce to these requests it just teaches your employer that they can get away with abusing you more.
So, maybe read your contract before you sign it? If the contract says they can call/tell you to come in at anytime (even in a round about/sneaky way), then per contract you're obligated to fulfill that. If you dont fulfill the contract then they have grounds to fire you. If you dont like what the contract says, then you can negotiate whats on the contract. Dont sign anything until both side have a updated contract and there's no sneaky language in there (we can update the terms at any time we want without your consent). If you dont know how to negotiate contract then tough luck, go work for a union shop.

I don't mind going into work early, but that's only because my company pays me the OT and they always give me the heads-up to do so. I don't also mind pulling favors for my supervisor and such, because my company goes pretty far to make sure we're taken care of. Take care of your people, and they'll take care of you.
I would say this depends on a position you have in a company. If this would be a high responsibility/ high salary job they can expect that from you but if this is just a standard mid/low level position it is their job to plan things that will align in working hours.

I had made if clear I had plans on a certain day later this month weeks prior before they even finished making the schedule. - They still scheduled me. - Called to remind them I needed that day free. - Said they would fix it. - Schedule updated today. - They removed an hour from my already short shift today from 3 hours to just two hours. Salaried means you are not paid per hour. You are likely paid to do specific work and there may be times when it's busy or very quiet, you get paid the same. Most salaried employees don't get paid overtime except in specific circumstances. Salaried employees won't have their pay cut if its quiet and if they are paid the same even if there is no work to do. They have long term or permanent contracts and very strong benefits and are likely Union members. Hope that helps.

I never once in my life accepted to work for free. I got pushed to work longer hours but was compensated when I was younger, now, I won't budge. Had a job that required me to show up at the security gate and then my boss would drive us down to the job site which took 15-30 minutes each way. He saw me marking my hours one day and was like, 'We don't pay for driving, that's on you." I just stared at him and was like, "Are you stupid?"
Because I didn't want to get in a big fight as I was only 19 at the time I just mentally logged any time earned and spread it out over the weeks as our hours varied based on the tasks needing done, sometimes 10, sometimes 12, sometimes 16. It was based usually on the weather, if we could work we worked. So I just started rounding in my favor anytime to make up for lost hours he tried to take from me for being on the job site. So worked till 6:03, I put 6:15 until I made up my hours, he didn't check all the time so that's how I was able to get everything I worked for. If it had really become an issue I would have probably fought harder. I HATE doing free labor and even at 19 I wouldn't have done it, I just found the easiest solution back then.

I used to work in South Korea, the realm where overtime pay does not exist. If your hours are 9-5, or whatever time you’re scheduled, your employer will still make you come in early or stay late to make sure you get all your tasks completed. Also in Korean culture, it is considered rude to go home before the boss does. So we would have to stay late sometimes until they punched out.

I've had jobs, for instance, that are closed on Sundays and they've wanted us to come in and have meetings. I've never done it a bunch of people kind of followed my lead on that and the company just stopped doing it all together. Don't work for them anymore. But when I left they were just writing messages on the boards and sending emails and texts, it worked better that Way and you didn't have any employees showing up on Monday. I grew up being taught that going above and beyond for your employer was the way to live. It didn't matter what you had to sacrifice, you weren't considered a "hard worker" or a "devoted employee" unless you gave the company everything you had. The corporate people at a certain coffee shop I used to work in expected all employees to be available and on call 24/7 without being in the contract to be available at all times since they're employees used to call off most of the time. They hire high school students and college kids at the highest rates. When I completed my hourly rate shift and there was a call off I had been asked to do a double shift and when I denied "you need to be a team player and be dedicated to the job". Up until April of 2023 I endured every little thing and I left for a company that respects days off and employee's mental/physical health. The old employer's Director of operations last words to me were "we will see you in three months since people don't last long where you are going", well it's going to be a year this April since I left and I have a more... important role in that company while getting paid more, traveling to other stores within their corporate market and most importantly earning a 401k since the other company I was working for never had my 401k set up when I first got a higher up position that included one back in 2018.

When she was talking about salary, she meant that it isn't just "9-5". It is whatever is specified in the contract, I work salary, so I get the same amount of income every month regardless of the hours I work as long as I complete the duties outlined in the contract. Sometimes I might work a 50 hour week, sometimes I might work a 20 hour week, so it all evens out (though MAX hours are in the contract). I am allowed to make my own hours, but some people might have specified hours, like9-5, and if they have a quarterly 8 am meeting, it would be listed in the contract as a required duty, so you HAVE to attend. You are paid to do what is outlined in the contract, not per hour, and it sounded like that meeting was in the employment contract, so he would have broken the contract. It does all differ between companies, but that is the basics. If he was paid hourly, then a totally different thing.
Hey, I work salary too. But the company I work for, they made us log our time and each week, we must work at least 40 hours. So, even there are weeks we might go above 40 hours, there's never under 40 hours. I think what you said make sense. Yet, quite some companies not working that way.

I'm in San Francisco, and I've learned lately that our labor laws are quite different from the rest of the country, even on Salary, time 1/2 has to be paid for anything over 8 hour, and 12 hour is a max workday. I know it is worked into salary somehow, but don't understand how. I think where you live also influences how you react to this, a lot of the country is still at a min wage of $7.25/hour which makes 1 extra hour VERY important to some people, but then other places have higher min wages, It is $18.07 here, which would make people more able to afford to not care about 1 hour of pay. @@HicSvntDracones I am in CA too. I am in Los Angeles. My past experience has been vary due to each companies policy. One company I worked for, even I was on salary. They gave us "1.5 comp time" per each extra hour we work, which was very nice. But most salary job only give us the fixed salary without anything extra. So, yeah.... Work 40 hr is min, but nothing extra if you have to work OT. Also, they are not happy when we need to work OT, we need to get the management to give us hours to do that that. It's like, I need to BET for them to let me work for free, because I want to finish the project.

Most employers only car if you don't meet the hours, but don't rush to send you home if you do over your hours, especially if you are salaried and don't get overtime.
You're well within your right to walk away during the allotted finish times. However, if tasks haven't been done that have been outlined in a contract, that's where it gets messy. And in that case, it's really up to you to get it done on time to avoid the problem.
That being said and if everything goes smoothly, sometimes it is simply just the daunting case that you have to go to your manager and say "I'm leaving".
It takes a lot of confidence to do that especially when you don't know what the reaction will be. I never found the courage to do so and I know many others who are the same.
There are two sides of the coin. Some people abuse the 'right' some are too uncomfortable facing it but choose to moan later.
Also, some employers respect the confidence required to do such a thing, others genuinely resent it and it can mean the difference between a promotion or a dismissal, which when you have a family to feed is a deterrent from saying something in-of-itself.
This issue has never been black and white.

Salaried employees don't have fixed hours. I was a salaried employee (engineer) my entire working life. It has advantages and disadvantages. Even though there is a typical start time you would be expected to be available when needed. But, since you don't punch a time clock, if you need to come in late or leave early occasionally, as long as you don't abuse it, you can and it doesn't affect your pay.
You may or may not get overtime if you work extra hours and if you do then it's usually straight time rather than time and a half. But your salary is typically much higher and if there is a bonus program you're usually eligible for that which gives you an interest in the success of the company.
In the long run typically most salaried employees make out much better than hourly employees. Just about all company executives and professionals are salaried.

When an employee is being paid salary there is usually a contract stating their duties to earn their salary. They are given specific tasks and quotas that need to be performed in a given time. Meetings would be mandatory no matter the time. The thing is that they will have to work until their duties and quotas are completed. Sometimes they finish ahead of time and once it’s finished they are free to leave, on the other hand if it takes longer, then they need to work more than what they are paid for. I don’t believe she was contradicting herself. She essentially explained that if you work on a salary and it’s clearly defined as a 9 to 5 you don’t and shouldn’t need to work before or after those hours. However in that specific situation the consultant who makes 100k-120k base most likely does not work on a salary and is told before signing the contract that there are quarterly meetings for all new hires which include people in other continents. 8 am eastern time just happened to be best but the time will obviously be different elsewhere.
TL;DR: Don’t work before or after your work hours. The employee mentioned in the rant from a different employer was most likely not working on a 9 to 5 salary and was told before signing that those meetings happen quarterly.

Did 20 years in the Navy. Meetings about meetings. Was a contractor for the government, meetings about meetings with the government. 9 out of 10 meetings are about the 10th meeting. Most people in leadership positions use their position to justify their role in the company/government/entity. This is because they are not qualified and should never have been allowed in that position. If you feel the need to micro manage, either your staff needs training, or you need training. Where I work now we have meetings like you would expect. A meeting about a particular requirement/need/adjustment; also the meeting has a point, you have an issue that needs resolution, the meeting is to discuss the topic and come up with a plan of action.
99% of meetings in business and government are useless. That is reality.

I absolutely hate meetings, but depending on your job, sometimes you need to make an extra sacrifice here and there. I had an 8AM meeting with the team from India recently. I could’ve told them to shove it, and either stay later (it’s 9PM their time) or just figure it out in their own, but I went, and it was an inconvenience but wasn’t too bad. How important is the meeting and how frequently do they demand extra time from you? Have boundaries, and if possible, leave companies that have unreasonable asks for your time, but at the same time, if you’re rigidly 9-to-5 at a corporate job no exceptions, then don’t be surprised if the company decide they don’t need your services anymore.

I been trying to get a job also and 2 of the jobs say they are hiring for a specific position but once I’m at the job they change my position to something else I didn’t apply for and that’s super annoying I just don’t show up the next day.
That happened a lot when I was younger in my teens and early 20s. Don't just not show up the next day. Have a conversation with your boss first if you didn't start at the position discussed at your interview or orientation. In my experience, if you put up with it and learn how to be good at more than one position and seek out the knowledge to learn more, you'll be valued and relied on and that's when you can negotiate a promotion or a raise. You won't be considered expendable anymore. When you prove you'll be more reliable than others and are willing to learn more than just your position, you're taken way more seriously. But if that's not what you want to do, let it be known to your boss or employer.

if you are on a salary, its different from working hourly, while on a salary, it doesn't matter how many hours you work because your pay won't increase or decrease because it isn't based on the amount of hours you put in. its a fixed pay, so if someone was scheduled to work 9 to 5 but was on a salary and they told them to come in at 8 for a meeting, they would still get paid the same. thats what the lady was referring to.

I ran my own construction business for over 25 years and the only meeting I ever had with my employees was once a year to see where they wanted to go for the Christmas piss up.
I had a coworker who worked for the corporation for 27 years. She was a hard worker and extremely friendly. Because of budget cuts, they wanted her to leave by making her life miserable. Her life was so miserable that she finally snapped and they had a reason to fire her. Now she's working at Target making low wages, she use to make $145k a year and because she had no college degree due to her not needing it at the time she started working in the 70s , she had no strong credentials. Eventually they fired me too. This system is evil. Im done with money!

Salary is a scam. I was a salaried assistant manager at a pizza place for 2 years. Busted my butt cuz I loved it and got burned in the end, but my salary was $750 a week. The catch was I had to work 50 hours a week. So I basically made a glorified $15/hr and didnt get overtime period. They told me it was because we would get a biweekly bonus but it wasnt guaranteed, could be taked away for whatever reason our district manager came up with, and often wasn't much anyways. Any hours I worked over my 50 (I averaged at least 52 every week, sometimes close to 60) was just free labor. I also had to answer my phone and be prepared to come in anytime my higher ups asked, even it was my day off. Only exception was if I took pto. Tldr: salary is a scam, stay hourly.
It is, I sold cars for two dealers and my salary that I earned had to be returned from the commission I earned and if I didn't earn enough commission to return it then I would be let go.
Work for a good employer and you'll only work 35 if not less a week.

If you have a corporate meeting quarterly and it was made known during the interview process, then you are obligated to go. It’s part of the contract you agreed upon. You can ask for a bonus for coming into work 1 hr early 4 days a year. But they’re probably not going to give that to you. Either give 4 hours of your year to know what your company is doing, or work that 9-5 hourly job where they really don’t care. Salary jobs come with fine print. It’s your job to read it.

Regardless if you are salaried or not, the message of the fact you should come tomorrow at an earlier hour should be done at least 24 hours before when you are supposed to come because you need to reschedule that day's appointments or entire plan for the day.
I don't know how it is in the USA but where I live after 5 PM, even after 3 PM you are unable to reschedule appointments. And depending on the premise, you may not only get banned from using the services but also get fined for not coming on time or not messaging a day before (you cannot reach them after 5 PM and they do not read emails for the same reason because no one's there).
Now the fun part: what if someone does not jump onto E-mail or turns off the work phone (because no one in the right might use their private phone nowadays anyway to keep their privacy, at least in here)? Over here, unless you are an emergency worker (firefighter, police, etc.), you have zero obligations to respond to work-related e-mails and telephones, and even if you respond to the call you have full right to refuse without further repercussions (at least done legally).
Salaried basically meams you get paid a set amount regardless of the hours. It means on slow times if you work less you still get paid the same, but during busy times if you work more youre still paid the same. A lot of employers dont want you to know that theres never a slow period. (At least in retail) theres some jobs where thats a sweet deal, if you know you can finish all your work early then youre good.
At my last job I've used to wake up at 4am, I used to hate waking up so early & I'm not even a morning person at all , That I've noticed that I was started to become more depressed. Just because I hardly didn't get enough sleep then top of my anxiety comes more at night . so its was best for me to switch Full time & Part time

Im 15 and have no work experience. I tried my hardest to go above and beyond for my employer, but it seemed that no matter what i did, it was never enough. So black incel small D guy here and this is how things are for me. I'm abgraphic designer for a real estate brokerage. I have to commute to work and the hours are from 8 to 5. Since day one I asked for 7 to 4 because I wake up at 2 am to go to the gym and coming in the evenings at 5 were traffic heavy, so 4 works. If I get to work before 7, like around 6:20, I have time to wash my car and chill before I start day. I put all my socializing time, church, deep sleep and so on for the weekends or vacation time. I pledged in college so I am used to waking up early and going to bed around 7 or 7:30. This works for me and I've been doing this for years. I used to work 2 jobs and made time for everything. I'm a 89 baby and a former immigrant turned proud American. There is a fine line between making excuses, being lazy and taking on too much of a load. Finding a balance is key, but if you don't try to make something work then what's the point? Find a job that works for you or get a better mentality with the mindset to do greatness. Simple.

I used to work at Kroger where I was often asked to work before and after my shifts. They would pay me for the extra time, but also made it clear that I didn’t have to work extra if it wasn’t scheduled.
I don't particularly agree with the point (I stopped a few seconds into you talking about it) that "all meetings are useless". A lot of meetings could have been an email, but when we are talking about new features, which provider to go with, how to integrate them with our system, etc, there needs to be a in-real-time response over Zoom or in person to get to the bottom of it. Otherwise, it's an async back and forth over Slack which takes a lot longer.
Salaried vs Hourly: Salery means you work for this set amount of dollars per month/week/year, whatever it is your contract states and that you agreed to. But, this involves being on call the entire time. 24/7. That is ALWAYS the agreement you make when agreeing to Salary instead of hourly. Blackout times that you set to not be on call should be negotiated and written into the contract when deciding what that salary is. One of the biggest reasons I am still an associate instead of management where I have worked for 9yrs. I am not about to be worked to the bone and feel as if I am not being paid right for it.
I do agree that if you want your staff to start work earlier, you should let them off earlier as well. Why do corporations like to milk employees and not pay them at all?
I used to work at a big corporation in which my jobscope works around the clock. APAC will handover to EMEA to NAM and then the cycle repeats.
As I was in APAC we were always expected to attend night calls at 10PM once every fortnight. Or if we could not finish our work during work hours we needed to log back in at night. Once my EMEA colleague told me I should not be working until so late. But all these translated to nothing as people expect you to function normally at work the following day as if the night calls didn't happen...
( i am a caregiver for people with special needs ) i was hired to work 6 am to 2pm Monday through Friday and was never told anything about any mandatory overtime. the other day my boss said " if this person doesn't work weekends then i am going to have to implement mandatory over time meaning yall have to work a 6am to 6pm on weekdays and possibly weekends " i looked at my coworker after reading that text and said i refuse to work weekends or past 2pm i have a life outside of work its not my fault, not to mention weekend shift gets paid more per hour but they said we wouldn't get paid weekend wage if we work weekends.

They may be taking a client golfing one afternoon and working until 11pm the next day [literally speaking from personal experience] - some jobs don't fit neatly into a 9-5. BUT - i am sure this is getting abused no end today
I worked at a large shipping company back in the early 2000's as a salaried Part-time Supervisor (6-10pm) and I was told during the hiring process that twice a month I was to be part of a phone-in conference call from home with all the other supers from each major hub in the country. The conference would last an hour sometimes more and even though I was salaried I was paid for that extra time away from my regular work hours. All other companies that I've worked as an hourly employee, all meetings were held during working hours.
Also, I can sometimes understand the 'you wont get as far in your career' BUT from my experience its always been retail/fast food/mcdonalds employees that get this shit treatment, if you are actually working a more professional jobs they treat you with respect. As such, it does not harm your career in any way to say no against these types of bosses in the "low level" jobs (for a lack of better wording, not to disrespect anyone in them of course).
In any case, its also partly about sending a message of not being a pushover. If you understand the Nacho $20 short 'Agreed amount or no deal' clip from better call saul, you'll understand. If you are always willing to look nice and acquiesce to these requests it just teaches your employer that they can get away with abusing you more.
So, maybe read your contract before you sign it? If the contract says they can call/tell you to come in at anytime (even in a round about/sneaky way), then per contract you're obligated to fulfill that. If you dont fulfill the contract then they have grounds to fire you. If you dont like what the contract says, then you can negotiate whats on the contract. Dont sign anything until both side have a updated contract and there's no sneaky language in there (we can update the terms at any time we want without your consent). If you dont know how to negotiate contract then tough luck, go work for a union shop.
My favorite words are “if I’m on the clock we can talk. If the time clocks not a ticking I’m not a listening” live by them. If I ain’t on the clock you got 5 words or less to tell me what’s up. Otherwise you wasting valuable seconds from my life. Want me to work OT? Txt me the hours n when I’ll respond back. If I’m not going to be paid. Cya at my normal clock in time. I ain’t paid I ain’t there. Simple.
I don't mind going into work early, but that's only because my company pays me the OT and they always give me the heads-up to do so. I don't also mind pulling favors for my supervisor and such, because my company goes pretty far to make sure we're taken care of. Take care of your people, and they'll take care of you.
I would say this depends on a position you have in a company. If this would be a high responsibility/ high salary job they can expect that from you but if this is just a standard mid/low level position it is their job to plan things that will align in working hours.

I’ve only ever asked for one day off when I was sick. - Have had the boss call me in to cover for other people. Even ones in different offices on my scheduled day offs. - Boss tried to call me in during another scheduled day off. - I had already asked not to call me in that day since I already had plans. - Didn’t go.
I had made if clear I had plans on a certain day later this month weeks prior before they even finished making the schedule. - They still scheduled me. - Called to remind them I needed that day free. - Said they would fix it. - Schedule updated today. - They removed an hour from my already short shift today from 3 hours to just two hours. Still haven’t removed that day I need. 🤦🏻♀️
A stipulated contract is a stipulated contract. Start at 09:00 and leave at 17:00. No ifs, ands or buts. That woman is absolutely deranged.
Salaried means you are not paid per hour. You are likely paid to do specific work and there may be times when it's busy or very quiet, you get paid the same. Most salaried employees don't get paid overtime except in specific circumstances. Salaried employees won't have their pay cut if its quiet and if they are paid the same even if there is no work to do. They have long term or permanent contracts and very strong benefits and are likely Union members.

I had to tell my employers several times to each one of them thru years of work that I have a, family, kids, other obligations, Dr checkups, generally a LiFE outside the workplace and I am not a, robot with an on/off button... If something is discussed earlier so you can organize yourself, no problem, but these short notices were killing me, my colleagues too and here is much worse then there trust me
