Any non horn player should do the Ray Brown exercise--play a simple bass line and sing the melody. Then, play the melody while singing the bass movement. Horn players can do this too, but they gotta get to the piano and put down the horn... or be Nicholas Payton :) You did a video on practicing rhythmic sub-divisions. I was wondering if you could do a video on time feel? Great bassists have a way of laying back while pushing forward to propel the beat even as they improvise. I liken it to riding in a hot rod, with the top down, slamming on the gas, while laying WAY back in your seat cushion. Maybe this is common knowledge for a bass player. Maybe that means us NON bass players have to actually pay attention when the bassist solos--we might learn a thing or two :)

Monk wanted all the people in his bands to solo off the melody all the time. It’s a great place to start-the actual song you’re playing. Thanks for this.
Now THAT is very interesting. I think Monk's melodies are so unusual that it is a logical approach...but also a logical approach in many song situations, but especially Monk's melodies.
You’re so right on thank you I wish somebody had told me that many years ago. I played professionally for many years. And I did all the things you talk about on your channel like playing anything anywhere anytime. Concerts orchestra is classical showtunes jazz gigs. But it wasn’t until I retired that I actually started learning the melody to all my favorite jazz tunes. And now it’s easier to remember the chord changes. My sense of accompanying The singer or the soloist is greatly improved. Better late than never. I hope all these new young players learn the head to all the songs they play. Great video! it's so important no matter what instrument to play the melody and "know it". So glad you're not only saying it, but doing it while accompanying yourself at the same time. I hope this opens bass players' eyes to new possibilities.It's also nice in a trio setting to have the bassist play the melody. What a beautiful affect it brings to the dynamics of the set. Can you imagine!? I played in a group in which the guitar player NEVER learned the head of any of the songs we played. Yeah...we weren't ever worthy of listening to. Crazy...still shakin' my head on that one.
