    I use these same pieces of foam poster board for several uses! 1- lightweight portable reflector, 2- fanning the model's hair outdoors; 3-as a cushion between wall art samples in my carrying bag; 4-demonstrating the size of wall art on clients' walls during in home consultations! Each piece is 20x30 and I have 2 in my bag (remember as cushions?). So I can hold up the piece easily to show them how much wall space 1-20x30 takes up (vertical and landscape), then 2-20x30, and finally I push the 2 pieces together to show the size of 1-40x60.

      A-muse this is genius! I never thought to put them between wall art while traveling...or thought to carry two 20x30s and put together to up sell even bigger! I usually have a couple different sizes to show but your way make waaaay more sense lol 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️

    BTW, I have, on a couple of occasions, used foam board as a background for tabletop product photography. I just put my foam board on the floor and set my product on the board then put a few items out at the edges of the shot (merchandising) then set up my lights. Quick and functional.

    I am the same I use them to bounce some flash as a reflector. Also use them to set products on for some product Photography. Also if I need a really shining surface I lay some 1/16 plexiglass on top of it for that mirror looks. Even used color plexiglass for a color look and the white backing brings out the color. But like this ideal to make a quick and easy back drop, thanks.

    Great Spyros. Thanks! Two questions:
    1. How would you make them portable enough to take in your car without having a horizontal fold?
    2. can one paint that stuff to have black on one side?

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 4 роки тому +6

      #1, you have to have a horizontal fold, as do the VFlats you buy for 400$. The physics of the reality world cannot change with theoretical math. :-)
      #2. Yes, you can use matte black spray paint, or best to roll it on with a super light weight roller so it doesnt get too wet. You can also tape black matte paper over it. But, you can also have better luck with thicker insulation material if you want to paint, as they have a foil side and a laminated other side. these are very cheap, but much stronger longer lasting that "official" vflat world product(thin), or foam board.

  • @BenSemisch

    Okay. I've finally made my v flats and I dislike them because I thought they'd block spill light off my subject but I failed to take into account the fact that they're translucent and let light through. And since I have arthritis in my back I think I will just go ahead and buy some commercial v flats. I just can't endure the back pain of doing this again with thick boards. But I DID enjoy the video, Spyros, very entertaining-with the finger snapping edits! Definitely cool!

    • @spyrosheniadis
      @spyrosheniadis  5 років тому +3

      Thanks Mark! I'm glad you enjoyed! Sorry these didn't work out for you. As a budget option they're clearly not the highest quality, but they can be super useful. An option for those wanting to deal with the translucence is to get some of the black foam boards and tape them to the back side. Not only will that eliminate the reflections but then you have a black/white v flat, which is even more versatile. Though I understand with your back that's not a great option.

    • @markshirley01
      @markshirley01 5 років тому

    I use my v-flats for fill, negative fill (black v-flats), and for set design.
    Good video...I paid about $190 to make my flats out of 1/2 inch foam boards from Home Depot. Nonetheless, still drastically less expensive than purchasing gator-board (minimum purchase order of 12 @ ~$550 from Uline).

      make it and leave gap(less than he uses, his gaps are huge) at half height, and then use hook loop fasteners to secure the stack. If you have a well stocked art supply store, you may have these thick versions(1/5" thick) and black core, and they also have them with one side white other side black. More cost, but they are also more versatile.. A single full sheet can be about $90
