I’d argue United is better than Delta at this point. Just look at meals of United compared to Delta, United imo has better food and more than Delta offer. United offers a main course, side, bread w/ butter, and a dessert item. I believe Delta only offers a main course and a side and maybe a dessert. Network wise, United is clearly well clear of Delta especially with their Star Alliance connections in Asia to the likes of ANA, Eva Air, and Singapore Airlines. Yes Korean Air, China Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines are a good airlines which I believe are 4 star carriers, ANA, Eva Air, and Singapore Airlines are all 5 star carriers all within the top 8 airlines in the world. In Europe, United offers connections to Lufthansa, Swiss International, and Turkish Airlines. Of the top 10 airlines in the world, 5 are star alliance (ANA, Singapore Airlines, Eva Air, Turkish, Swiss).

The airline industry has been a race to the bottom since 1978, the utility that air travel once was has been commodified by fatcats trying to please shareholders more than passengers, and air travel in and of itself has become less of an experience and more of a rather stressful means to an end.

In fact, I was recently at an airport where the Delta and United counters were directly next to each other. Delta had three agents working the desk, and United had zero. If United truly wants to take some of Delta's business, they'll need to teach their employees to be nice to passengers.

United's domestic seats are too cramped compared to Delta and JetBlue. Internationally the Polaris seats don't compare to the offerings of elite airlines like Emirates, Lufthansa, or Japanese Airlines. All of the rest is just window dressing until United can find a way to make their seats more spacious and comfortable. A good route network is a nice plus but overrated if the experience is subpar. Airlines should realize that travel is endogenous to flight quality. Unless they are desperate many people will fly somewhere their favorite airline goes rather than pick an obscure destibation and fly on a crappy plane to get there.

Used to be a frequent flier on Delta and now am with United. Delta has far superior customer service. In addition, they have the better hubs. I have never had so many delayed flights like with United, most times being due to weather at their hubs, repairs, etc. By far the worst hub for passengers has to be their horrible Chicago hub and that will continue to be United's downfall. Delta's hubs are much easier to navigate, better layouts, etc.

Our company switched to United from delta recently and most of us (over 200 employees) are mostly satisfied with the move.
United is much easier to switch flights at last minute or cancelling than delta.
Their app is far more user friendly and has more features than any airline. Reward program is better than the other two. Their Polaris lounges have impressed all of us. They’re beautiful.
Like you said they do have hubs at problematic areas like Chicago with weather issue or EWR. But delays / cancellations are not too different with delta and UAL. At least from what we have seen our team and myself for this past 2 years.

We generally fly United to Europe because of their nonstops but one of the issues with United is old long haul equipment. A couple of years ago we had a flight from Newark to Milan cancelled. The next night as we were pushed back the auxiliary would not start the engine so we had to get pushed back to the gate to get the engine started and finally 4 hours late we took off. The following year our flight from Munich to Newark was cancelled again because of equipment issues. Fortunately we were able to get on the Lufthansa flight. We did try Air France on our 2 flights to Europe last year but the layovers in Paris were hours long and they use terminal 2 at Newark which is a dump, even though the Port Authority dumped millions into a renovation. We are flying United to Geneva in a few weeks, Swiss doesnt go there from Newark, and we are headed to Lisbon early next year. Hopefully everything will go smoothly.

United now forces customers to add a credit or debit card that will be charged twice the amount of a check or carry on fee if you were to bring your bag to the gate and it was deemed to be a checked or carry on instead of a personal item if you are basic economy ticket holder. It also has All Nippon. Which means on a flight between San Francisco and Tokyo, you can book yourself on an All Nippon flight. All Nippon, as a Japanese airline, is known for their pleasant, deferential Japanese hospitality, of course. That's why you booked on All Nippon. But then you get into SFO, and find out that your All Nippon flight is actually on United, because Star Alliance conned you that much. Imagine booking a room at the Hyatt Regency, only to be told by the front desk clerk that "actually, your room is at the Motel 6".

@@stephancox9105 You see that from the flight number. What you experienced is named code sharing.
4 digit flight codes with an 8 or 9 in front is a code share flight - and if you click on details you will see the original flight number (in your case an UA.....) and/or "Flight operated by United Airlines".

I’ve been thinking about this a lot this year while I’ve been traveling around the US weekly for work. Is United better than Delta now? Ultimately my answer is no but it’s close which should make Delta worried.
United’s strengths over Delta are customer service and cabin comfort. When dealing with cancellations United’s customer service from airline employees on the ground and their app is really second to none and better than what I experienced from Delta with a cancellation.
Also, United’s new Max and 321 neos are the most comfortable domestic cabins in the Big 3 right now.
On the downside, I have my two biggest issues, one of which will always keep them behind Delta.
First issue is lack of consistency. When I get off a 9 month old Max 9 with towering ceilings and clean spacious seats then connect into an old Continental NG with cramped seats, and dark, dingy cabins it’s like you’re flying two different airlines and the experience isn’t remotely comparable.
The other issue is deltas hubs are just better than United’s. Delta JFK will always be superior to UA at Newark. ATL is infinitely more enjoyable than ORD and much less frustrating. United’s ace is DEN which is easy and being revamped with nice new terminals but it’s a bit further west. United has no southeast hub which AA and DL leverage to great success. CLT, MIA, DFW, and ATL are crucial to connect a huge majority of the country conveniently. IAD is awful and doesn’t cut it. ORD is awful as well. I’d like to see massive changes to ORD (both terminal and airport layout re taxi times) and UA open a SE US hub if they’re really going to be top dog.
But bravo to United for trying to compete. I’ve definitely noticed the improvement. Whereas American doesn’t even care

@@henrylopez3479 I’m assuming you’re talking about Dr.Dao’s incident with floor dragging. Airport police did that. United called airport police when he refused to get off the flight when told to do so. All airlines still force overbooked people off. Even delta. Compensation just went higher now so doesn’t happen often.
Tires blowing up. You don’t think delta’s tire doesn’t ? Two mechanics just died at ATL delta due to tire exploding during overhaul. Aircraft tire failure happens all over the world with airlines. United’s tire incident was found as a failure on part itself. Nothing with installation.
Door exploding mid flight ? You sure that’s United.

Those who complain of everyday mishaps and holding US carriers to global premium standards are perhaps missing the bigger picture. United's most significant advantage over its peers is network. If they do stick to improving products and service having finally emerged from the long shadow of the merger, which is already evident in branding and technology, they are in a very good position to succeed.

I'm never flying American, I flew on their first class cabin for a long trip and was very disappointed; seats were bottomed out, the wall panels had stains all over, it smell bad and the whole area was just really dirty, oh and the arms rest were really sticky, I remember I had to use a sanitary wipe that I happen to had with me to clean the arms rest. The food was the worst I ever had on a flight. The meals I received on the flight during my deployments to Iraq were leagues ahead of American's "first class". I felt embarrassed just thinking about their crappy planes and their sub-pair services being offered in other countries.

I’ve been regularly flying internationally for years. US carriers have definitely surpassed the European carriers who have really fallen off a cliff since Covid. Asian carriers are still far and away the best.
