What 13 Handicap Golf Actually Looks Like (Denbigh GC)

  • Can I break 90? - EVERY SHOT IN 23 MINUTES
A round of summer golf at Denbigh golf club in North Wales. It's a par 69 parkland course that was founded in 1908.
The green fees were £27.50 for 18 holes in August 2022.
I'm James, a golfer with a dodgy swing now playing off a 13 handicap. I had taken 4 golf lessons to improve my swing on the day of play.
I'm looking to continuously break 90 or 85 on the courses I play. Even if I don't shoot a good score I always enjoy strolling around the fairways of North Wales, UK :-)

You should be extremely proud of how you played on the back 9 after the front 9. I’d struggle to keep my head after that front 9.
You’re a great example of how golf can be fun even if you aren’t playing well. You seemed to stay positive on the camera despite your struggles early on!

Great comeback on back 9. I just had a 13 over on my front 9 and getting frustrated. Before back 9 I thought James would just say, “Golf’s a funny game.” I thought just have some fun, and then shot 4 over. My attitude at break definitely would have been another double digit over until I thought about your positive attitude. Thank you!

2 very different halves for that round James. But good on you for hanging in there. That second 9, was a joy too watch. But also great for confidence I would imagine. I play in Australia, and in summer the temps are always above 30, hydration is very important and so is salty foods. they make you drink more water. But that course does look rather challenging. 😃

Golfing on a dry course is tough. It's hard not to get frustrated. The golf course I play on in my league is so dry that this week I hit a chip shot almost 200 yards into a water hazard I thought I could avoid (it is downhill all the way to the hazard; the ball could not stop rolling). That is an amazing recovery on the back nine holes. I also love the way you hit your draw shots. They are very majestic. One day I will learn to hit a draw shot. Keep up the good work.

generally, we need to warm up and practice more before teeing off.
the putting under 10 foot got him out of jail a few times. the green side bunker set up, and play looked like he wasn't expecting it to get out, on the one that did hit sand and cannoned out.
dug in, and had a decent back nine, which will give him encouragement to play again.
but, bit of a car crash really.

My short single axis swing relies on leg power passive hands except a wrist cock as I take the club back - your stoicism is also something I am trying to copy - missed 2 3 ft putts 9 hole round of +10 was more positive than normal - will practice putting more often.

No offense James, but I just had to laugh when you said this was played in the middle of a "heat wave," and you said it was 28 degrees but felt like 32 (Celsius obviously).
Where I live it was between 40-45 degrees through June and July.
Your 28/feels like 32 would be chilly here.
Also, I could only wish to shoot 19 over par on 9 holes. In fact, I played a round of 9 holes twice this summer, and each time shot 33 over par (on 9 holes).
So, your worst day would be my best day.

Don't get down over a rough round of golf, we've all had them. On your bunker shots, you're too upright with your swing, a flatter swing going through the sand with speed will get you much better results; the goal is to hit about 2 inches behind the ball and let it splash out with the sand.
