  • brs.li/120clown... Vertex Aquaristik generously donated a 120 Gallon tank with stand for the lobby at BulkReefSupply.com. We've decided to turn the tank into a clownfish harem aquarium and in this episode we are going to aquascape, install the return pump, move on to the filtration, calcium and alkalinity solution, install the controller, auto top off, lights, powerheads and battery back-ups.
Aquascaping - We decided to use Pukani because it gives the bubble tip anemones the type of habitat that they prefer in an aquarium - lots of holes where they can attach their foot deep within the rock. Plus the porous nature of Pukani maximizes the surface area providing more filtration properties. The sand we chose is Original Grade Live Sand from Ocean Direct. Again, this sand contains natural bacteria from the ocean to help with cycling the tank.
Filtration - Since we have the Vertex stand, tank and sump, we decided to outfit the filtration with the Vertex Omega 150, Vertex V6 pump for circulation and the Vertex RX-U 2.0 media reactor for GFO and Carbon.
Automation & Monitoring - the calcium and alkalinity requirements will be pretty low as there will not be any corals in the tank, but to keep with the Vertex theme, we are going to install the Vertex Libra Doser. For auto top off, we are going to install the Tunze Osmolator (Ryan's loves this ATO and it has never failed him. :)) To help monitor and further control, we install the Apex from Neptune Systems along with a Leak Detector (just in case).
Circulation - circulation can be a problem in a tank where the anemones are crawling around and can get sucked into the pumps. To keep the pumps to a minimum, we installed two MP40 pumps from EcoTech Marine along with a battery back-up. Having experience a power outage last summer - this was a must-have for this tank.
Lighting - lighting the tank was a tough choice with both the Vertex Illumina and the Radion Gen3. We ultimately went with the Gen 3 from EcoTech to allow us to get more familiar with them. Right away we noticed the quiet fan, easy to use buttons and the included indigo and UV on the base model - will be perfect for this tank.
Heating - Finally we chose the Neo-Therm Heaters from Cobalt Aquatics because tof the flat design and easy adjusting.
Stay tuned to see how the harem tank build progresses.

I like the way you always keep your presentations fresh, even when the subject has been covered many times before. Your advise is straight-forward and easy to understand, plus your reasoning is backed with experience and commonsense. It is always nice to see a new approach to old problems, especially when there are always new people coming into the hobby or even experienced people needing a refresher course.

Yes I've seen the nano cube. I currently have a 125 gallon reef and with the help of your products it is doing great! I spent a little over a grand getting her running by getting thing off craigslist. I have found out that people who jump into the hobby not knowing how much effort it takes to keep a reef beautiful will give most of their stuff away for next to nothing. Thanks for all the helpful videos and keeping your products cost effective for us small fish.

Your excitement and energy are very contagious. You have no trouble motivating me and my kids to work on new tank ideas and ways to tweak our systems. Thanks for the info and your advice. Look forward to seeing lots of mated pairs down the line.

This is unbelievable tank build. The equipment you've installed is sure to make this tank a sustainable environment for your harem. I'm super jealous.

damn dude I never would have thought of assembling a stand like that, but now I've seen it I would never buy a typical wooden stand. Being able to take off the panels so you can access the sump and install electrical components is just super awesome. and this is coming from a service tech who has seen his fair share of salt covered wooden stands

I only have nano tanks, but when I go bigger I want a 120G! I think it's the perfect size. Vertex makes some great products and I can't wait to see them in action. Beautiful job organizing the cables for the apex and equipment!

Great stuff Ryan! It's nice to see you do a 120G because that's what I'm looking to upgrade to (from a 48). It's great because I can see all the necessary equipment I'll need in order to start the tank build. Hard part now...just finding where I can purchase a 120G and a stand for a good price.

There's a lot of BTA tanks out there. It'd be really unique if you chose to feature another variety of nem like the Ritteri or long tentacle. That being said, I love the concept of this tank! I'm a big fan of nems (having a BTA tank myself, lol).

I feel like magnesium is super important for coraline....I have a little a year old 100gallon that up until a few months ago had zero coraline but my alkalinity 4.20 and calcium 440 which are with in range according to red sea test kit...however my magnesium was low in my opinion at about 1200ppm...Start dosing magnesium and now i have coraline pretty much every where....now its annoying to keep off the class lol....thanks for the video I look forward to this build as I am a clown addict :)

  • @surfingfl897

Lot of money in that tank. Over $5000 in just accessories, not including the tank and stand which I'm guessing is another $1000+. Going to look great I'm sure but unless you're rolling in the green most tanks will never have all these high end accessories. I enjoy your videos and buy your products. I'd like to see a "aquarium on a budget" video. A nice 125 gallon reef build under $1000.

When you say you add the amount of food you plan to feed whilst it's cycling to get the tank ready, I get why you would do it however my noob question is, do you take out the food after X amount of time or do you let it decompose?

The vertex V6 return pump. That produces nearly 1600 GPH, could you use a ball valve to turn down the pressure? i like the brand and the pump, but i am putting it on a 50 Gal. do you have a suggestion for a pump that is just as awesome but maybe not too overkill?
