My husband and I wanted to do this, we were trying to save up money to get a RV, because our truck we lived in broke down!! We had to move into a motel, then my husband and I found out he had throat cancer, there went our savings and our life, for awhile, "well" he beat cancer and now we're living back in a motel, It took everything we had, I'M 57 My husband is 65 someday I hope, we can some how get a truck and live in a travel trailer, I hope u feel blessed every day!!! ❤😊 don't take things for granted kids!! 😉👍

I hate hearing stories such as this. USA NEEDS AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE HEALTHCARE. Nobody should struggle or lose everything because they got sick. I hope you and your husband find, peace, happiness and are able to live your dream. But it’s ridiculous to have seniors living in hotels because that’s the best they can do. 😢

I used to think that way about Colorado, but then I found Montana to be much more suitable for me. Montana is just Colorado 50 years ago. Colorado has changed so much, and not in a good way!

@Nordicjumper There are still some good parts, but you are right. Too much development has changed it for the worse. Perhaps I can imagine myself into a trip to Montana some time in the near future. It's one state I've not yet been to.

I hate too agree with the person above
As somebody who was born and raised in Colorado most locals are getting priced out and a lot of the new people don't respect the ecosystems or the land that we live on.
Colorado is not as nice as it used to be nor affordable or friendly.
As a wildlife biologist as well a lot of our wildlife In public lands are getting degradated by this new population boom mainly due to these new people not understanding how it works, Or how to respect these beautiful areas And ecosystems.
I appreciate people coming and enjoying my home As I love sharing it ,why it's so awesome, And the communities me and my friends worked hard to build. Most of locals have to leave now because We can't afford to stay here Especially in the mountains.
I'm all 4 new culture and new people, But not if it destroys the Ecosystem and communities that make it so attractive in the first place.

I'm really proud of you for picking such a off the chart place. I wish you the best both of you. I live in Colorado I live in Denver and I don't want to live here anymore. I want to live outside of Denver and run a dog retirement home for elderly and possibly. Ill animals. Colorado is the perfect place to do it. So you go for it again. I wish you both and your little puppy the best.

I spent most of my life growing up in Golden. It was a great place back in the 60's and 70's. Now metro Denver is too crowded and expensive, it's ruined. I escaped the Rat Race almost 2 years ago and I haven't looked back.

All power to you, your criteria were great. I bought property, paid it off, poured my heart and soul into it. The mistake I made was one you were aware of, I didn’t calculate on adjoining land being sub-divided and turned into suburbia. I endured, constant trespass, damage to my plantings, stealing from my fruit trees. Then the Local Government tried to re-zone my land so that nothing could be done to it, to meet their “green space” objectives. I had enough and took the local government to court and forced them to buy the land off me at fair market price for the land without the ridiculous zoning they tried. I made a very good amount and have been searching for land to try again. I love central Colorado, but couldn’t survive the winters, I love parts of Arizona, but their local governments can be awful once they have you in their grasp. I love the hill country in Texas, but way to expensive. I’m tempted by some of the Southern seaside countryside, but also wary of their local government.

What were the restrictions that became problematic?
We have land in Northern Ontario, Canada. Unincorporated township doesn't have restrictions and the area we're in has a lot of water and predicted to get more water due to local geography and climate change. Haven't had any issues getting our house built aside from being forced to be off-grid.

@runningfromabear8354 we had cattle, EPA came and said we had to put them in an enclosed area and build or purchase a retaining building for the dung. Then they came back and said we had to keep the cattle out of the creek as they were peeing. So we got rid of the cows. Afterwards we no longer had trout in the stream because the cows were no longer providing food. It was a vicious cycle. We were told to keep them away from the fencing to forest land, yet someone else had a permit to graze. It is too much, we are no longer young and able to fight this garbage...so Idaho was more friendly.

    • @omnignarusist

you mean money. most people can't do this because by the time you add car, rv, land, then home it will be around 250-500k. Depending on how big you want your home ofc. A cheap cabin would work but after foundation and materials, yea. I'll do a breakdown. their vehicle and RV were probably 10k. Add insurance, gas, food, etc. The land will be at least 20-30k minimum in Colorado. Not counting property taxes, water, and electric. Even off grid solar, sewage, and a well or water source is going to add a bit, so I'd estimate another 7-10k. On the low end this leaves about 200k to build the cabin/home. Add tools, materials, and time. You might have 20k left over. Can't survive off that so you need a job. Ideally work from home(+internet). If not, 30 mins from a small city and or 2-3 hours from a major city. Gas will be an issue as well as time spent driving. Ofc this can all be done for less, but anything less than that low end isn't going to be worth it Imo. On top of that, neither of them knows about building, at least that's how it sounded from her voiceover. I want/ed to do something similar and have researched all of this.

Good luck. Wait until you apply for permits--if they are needed. Zoning and building codes can be tricky. Typically, you can't just slap a house up. There are lots of inspections throughout the process: foundation, building, HVAV, plumbing, and electrical are the typical, but where you are, it may be different, and you never know what's in the ground until you start digging. Make that one call to find out - even off the grid.

Or till they find out that campers are not permitted on the land or you need engineer and architect to draw up a cabin plan and no wood stove allowed for new construction. List goes on and on. When we were looking for land my first question was if the county has building department.

He had some great advice from educated people and he was a hard working man - He built our “dream” home years later - this time with the boys’ helping …. He did any repairs and additions and built a third home (casita) on our property. It takes a special kind of person to do this ! BYW, my husband was a computer engineer - no way connected to construction. - also he had contracted out the final plumbing and pouring the foundation.

I love the Scamp, but I grew up with an Airstream and my husband bought me a 1989 34’ Excella1000 for my 50th birthday last Autumn. I’d love to live free when we retire. Congrats on starting living free early! ❤❤
