  • Family and friends of John Hurt, who died in January, unite to pay tribute to the star. Hurt, whose career spanned everything from Shakespeare to sci-fi, is praised as a good heart, a bon vivant and is even called - by his Indiana Jones co-star Shia LaBeouf - a "god".

Clearly an actor not only respected by his peers, but also genuinely loved.

It took me at the least 3 films to realize I was looking at the same actor. Been a fan ever since.

Met John Hurt backstage at the Music Box theater during my run with John Wood in Deathtrap. Coincidentally, I had just come from a double bill of obscure John Hurt movies ( Little Malcolm, & East of Elephant Rock)
I found him sleeping in a chair on the deck, stage left. I was so surprised, that I barked "John Hurt !?? I just saw you in your two most obscure films ?" and I'm afraid I woke him up. But he was wonderfully warm & cheerful, despite he hadn't had enough sleep on a Supersonic jet from Paris. What an incredible soul. John Hurt will live forever.

Despite his rather dubious choices, Shia is one of the few actors that really excites me. Definitely not the finished article but he is never less than fascinating in whatever he does. I think his depth of character is shown hear in his message. He also has that intensity that John Hurt had, especially at a similar age and courage to take on a role that, on paper, won’t catch the eye but often does in practice.

John Hurt was superb as Quentin Crisp, Richie Rich, Jim Henson’s “The Storyteller”, The Elephant Man, Max in Midnight Express and the iconic astronaut with the alien bursting out of his belly. Too many more to list here. His performances were just superb. A great loss.

The naked civil servant another masterpiece from this fine actor. Much to his chagrin he discovered on who do you think you are that he had no Irish heritage. John, Ireland loss was greater. 🇮🇪🍀

I was a kid when I watched the Elephant Man on cable. It was one of my first experiences watching a film and being so moved by a performance. Beautiful tribute from Shia Labeouf, almost poetic.

Probably the best west of Irish accent I've ever heard from an actor. His character 'Bird' in The Field is unique and genius...An immense actor. I only realised in later life that John Hurt played that role despite seeing all his other films. He is legendary

I was performing in Deathtrap on B'way with John Wood in late fall, 1978. On a beautiful crisp Friday afternoon, I had my only chance to see John Hurt in the films, 'Little Malcolm' (aka Hail Scrawdyke) , and 'East of Elephant Rock'. At the Thalia , in NYC.
So I left that beautiful fall day, and went in to the gloom to see ....4 hours of John Hurt. And it was ...so good.
Hurt was our generation's Claude Rains: Compact in Stature, yet Mighty in Voice & Character.
About a week later, I'm walking across the backstage of the Music Box theater, heading for my dressing room.
And there in the gloom, lounging in an offstage chair, was John Hurt.
I blurted out ," John HURT! ?" And I think I woke him up. He'd just come in on the SST to promote a 'wild film, ' that I found out later, was the very wild, "Alien." I also found out that he was great friends with John Wood , having played Trystan Tzara with Wood in "Travesties' in London. When I told him I had just seen this very rare John Hurt Double Bill, (home video was still new) Hurt exclaimed , "Where was this ,and how the Hell did they find them.?"
Even though Hurt said he hadn't had much of a chance to sleep on that short flight of the SST, he was extremely personable and genuine. Just another Fellow actor sharing some time..
A few years ago, a friend took me to Brooklyn to see Hurt in "Krapps Last Tape". As always, Hurt was triumphant.
I was tempted to go back afterward , but then I realized, I was serving myself, not the great actor I admired, since his Richard Rich in 'Man for All Seasons.' We have your films, John Hurt. And I have a recording of you reading Jeckyl & Hyde in that rich, rugged and eloquent voice. You'll always be with us. Thank you

He was a brilliant live actor obviously but one of my favorite performances of his was voicing Hazel in Watership Down. And he was very much like that rabbit character. Not the biggest or strongest but brave, immensely charismatic, sharp as a whip and a leader.

I have the greatest respect for John Hurt, but why was the talentless Cathy Ashton there? It is a mystery to most how she ever got to occupy the powerful positions to which she was appointed. Appointed, never elected.
