    Dunkerswell used to be a Signals unit running a Radar Bomb plotting station. In the days of RAF bombers they practised their bombing techniques by making the run but rather than drop a real bomb on the target (often in a city somewhere) they sounded a radio tone, the Radar followed the Bomber and marked the "drop" point. A bit of maths and a set of aerodynamic tables allowed the operators to find out where the "bomb" would have fallen and provide a score in distance from the target. I was a member of a sister signals unit at Conningsby Lincs -705 signals unit.

    A great video Jon. I’m a firm believer in always picking up a level of service from ATC if it’s available for exactly the reason you highlight here! Was saved in an almost identical situation by Gatwick director during the quiet Covid flying days whilst under a basic service having left their airspace too. I chose to descend for airspace reasons, and never saw the conflicting traffic either. Eye opening.

    Hey Jon, I’m a pilot from Western Australia and I have flown around Dunkeswell before. One day when I convert my Australian PPL to UK PPL I’ll do this route! As well for Burgh Island in Devon I highly recommend a coastal flight in that area it is absolutely speechless.

    Ace video as always. As to calculating top of descent I find that the maths using TIME to destination (ETD) is easier then distance. I typically descend at 500 fpm so if I have to lose say 8000 ft then I start a 500 fpm descent 16 minutes out. Your Garmin 530 I’m sure will have a field you can configure for ETD. The only time I use distance is when on an IFR flight plan and ATC wants me to be at X altitude at Y nmi distance from a navaid. I guess I need simple maths since I only got a B in O Level. Haha

    I was going to say:
    Careful with that downwind departure from 07. You need to turn onto a bit of base before heading West to make sure you don't cut the corner of the Farnborough ATZ/CTA/CTZ. It has happened and has featured on the Blackbushe FAQ/Answers.
    But then I noticed on your track that you did that...

    Hi Jon, really enjoyed that flight, thank you.
    Was that Mr Sheen you were using on the canopy? You may want to try Plexus, available from LAS, it’s the best you can buy IMHO.
    NB Where is the standby a/c compass deviation card? All too often they drop out of the holder and get lost, maybe it’s lying in the footwell? I take it it’s been swung within the last three years and should be displayed?

    If they offer a traffic service then get it. You can’t assume they will give alerts if you are basic, while with traffic you will be alerted.

    Jon, a couple of observations if I may (yeah I know, everyone’s a critic!) for a 07 departure you could have climbed above the circuit height (but not above 2000’) into the overhead and then enroute from there - see pilots info on the airport website. I realise the timeline is edited but personally I would like to run the engine a little longer before completing the power checks - maybe taxi out of the BFG parking area and round into the 07 ‘new’ run up loop. Just a couple of thoughts, other than that excellent as always

    Jon, interested in the decision to climb 300'. Given the other aircraft was at a 'similar' height did you assume he was likely to be at 4500? If so why climb and risk hiding him with your wings/nose? Ta.

    A Basic service is just that. No radar derived traffic information. By passing radar derived traffic information to you, when you weren't even identified (or your mode C verified - was he 200ft below? what if you climbed into him because your mode c was a few hundred feet out?) may lead pilots into thinking that the service they are under is better than it actually is. It's a dangerous pretence, which civil controllers are expressly told to avoid. Please don't expect this!

    Hi Jon. I was told not to climb in a situation like that by raising your nose you are reducing your view considerably especially if left seat with traffic from the right, do you find climbing above traffic better?. Cheers Nils

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  4 роки тому +2

      Never heard that before. You'd have to do something to avoid, an alternative would be a descent or perhaps a right turn. Yes, the view is better with a descent.

    • @dustyflightbag2341
      @dustyflightbag2341 4 роки тому +1

      It's a tricky one as the traffic was 200' below "indicated" so it's making an assumption on the other aircraft's altimeter setting. I'm not sure what I would have done.... definitely not a decent into it though !

    • @georgeputtock6744
      @georgeputtock6744 4 роки тому +2

      @@dustyflightbag2341, FYI the indicated altitudes that the controllers see on their screen is based off the standard pressure setting (1013.25), to avoid such issues.
      The required accuracy for the Mode C / S reporting is +/- 150ft, so it's indeed possible that both aircraft could be at the same altitude in this case (John's altitude encoder on his transponder could have been 50FT out, and the conflicting traffic could have been 150ft out..) so it's certainly wise to take action 🙂

    • @dustyflightbag2341
      @dustyflightbag2341 4 роки тому

      @@georgeputtock6744 Thanks for that, never stop learning ! So here's a question then, I wonder what would be more accurate, the position indicated on ATC's radar screen or the altitude indicated. Depending on which is more accurate could offer a clue as to whether any avoiding action should be lateral or a swift change of altitude...?

    • @AleRon72
      @AleRon72 4 роки тому

      The Arrow climbs quite well; that is what I would have done to avoid. Descending into traffic that you almost certainly won't see until the last moment, if at all, is not a great option.

  • @jsteiger2228

    I was a bit surprised to hear that leaning was not much of a science or a "thing" in your club. Fuel flow is for sure not the way to do it, as fuel needs would change on different days at different density altitudes. I highly recommend watching videos by Mike Busch from EAA starting with this one: ua-cam.com/video/_VfiPuheeGw/v-deo.html
