Apparently it almost didn't get recorded. Janis performed this song on the second day of the festival which brought the audience to its feet for the first time, but was _not_ filmed. I've seen various reasons why from 'contract' disputes to personnel problems. Regardless, Joplin's performance on the second day was astounding enough that the organizers convinced the band to do another on the third (and last) day so that it could be filmed. Thank, as you say, god.

It’s awesome to see a phenomenal vocalist such as Cass Elliot watch & be in awe & admiration of a fellow, equally phenomenal vocalist of her time, Janis Joplin. Cass’s look of jaw dropping disbelief as she watches Janis perform is inspirational to see, as well as Janis’s performance!!
Janis makes my eyes tear if I haven't heard her in a while. Then I have to hear a couple songs to get over. She was an absolute phenom at the time, and hardly anybody realized it. The MOST underrated blues singer ever, IMO. RIP Janis...
Awsome, even when I've been played this song for about one hundred times on my tube, still gives me goosebumps. KICK ASS SONG, SINGED FROM THE DEPTHS OF HER SOUL => IMMORTAL EPICNESS.
She may be long time gone...but Janis is still very much here...and we ( The Old Ones..I´m 73 ) we must pass on and let the " Youngsters " know about " True Music and the Nerve " that goes along with it. Heart and Soul ❤
Every note she sings is from an authentic, personal place, you can’t fake this & that’s why it can’t be reproduced. She is fascinating, pouring out her emotions, her truth, putting it out there to be tore down, except she wasn’t because she is the one and only Janis Joplin 💜

June 17th 1967. The amazingly talented 24 year old Janis Joplin took the stage and changed the world in her own way. She had been born for this evening in my opinion. Rest in Peace sweet Janis.
The raspy voice really accentuates the hurt in her heart. I hate to say it but it's beautiful how she put all of her hurt into her singing. I'm sorry she went through what she went through but I'm glad she found a way to express it. Unfortunately she couldn't let all of it out and passed too soon. Much love from her home state, Texas!
@@DFlacko664 Plenty of reasons least is the poor recording equipment uses in those in those days. There was excellent equipment but available for a price. Artist didn't have money to toss in a well on & hope & dream & neither did the record company. Too recording companies were being hit fast and furious because everyone wanted to be a star.
WOW. what else can you say about this? I've never seen Janice Joplin before today, and wow, i can see why she is so popular. Passion. . Freedom. This girl makes people wish they could have as much fun as her. To bad she passed on so quickly. We need more people like her.

Loved seeing Mama Cass Elliot in the audience, completely blown away by Janis' performance. I still have the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I hear "Piece of my Heart" just like the first time I heard it, a million years ago.
She had a very unique gift, a great performer, who let you see deep inside, all the passion and pain. The only other person who is even close us Tina Turner. I always wonder what would Janice had been like, had she survived. She was a giant talent, but a flame that strong can't burn long.
Her music would have become greater and greater. She was developing more control and dynamics by the time she did Pearl. Funny you mention TIna Turner. I recall seeing her on Dick Cavett. He asked her who else in music she liked. She said only one group, Ike and Tina Turner. Couldn't think of anyone else.
Janice had a voice that couldn't be matched from anyone I'm 71 years old and I still love her music today God bless her soul she's singing in heaven fire fire

Maybe my favorite rock and roll moment. I looked in the comments to see if someone had said it for me and you did. Every time I hear Janis I feel I get that look Mama Cass did. I just experienced magic. Wish one person these days had a millimeter of that raw talent and we got to hear it.
Yes! I kept wondering who that beautiful girl was they kept showing in the audience, and then it came to me s she mouthed "Wow" , I wonder if performing in front of Cass made her nervous, or she gave this look in the end like "dang, girl I hope you liked it ! Yes you did. " That is soul full stuff right there. That whiskey soaked throat just screaming out loud, Wow indeed. And the lady had on some cool shoes too.
My husband was a hardcore hippie in Marin County and hung with her …said she was a very sweet woman but pretty broken…and then,of course, there was that incredible talent

❤I am 69 and she shreds mine every time I listen to her❤
Just popped up again. This woman was an idol back in the day.😁😁😁😁😁I used to dress 💯just like her back in the day. Thanks for sharing.Miss her music. The closest woman to her style was Tracy chaplain.Nobody can take her place.🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🎉
Very True,Well Said
Words can not express ..beautiful ... awesome.. insane ....OMG
Goodness. That hits hard, doesn't it? You can't sing the Blues, unless you've felt the Blues. Janis felt them.
It's simply overwhelming, full of emotion, hard to listen to and brutally honest.
What a voice. What a performer.
Glasgow, Scotland, UK
In two moments, Mama Cass in ecstasy. Janis was unique.
Now, they make a duet in the sky.
R.I.P. My beloved ones.
Still blows my mind. Never get tired of hearing Janis sing the blues. Rips my heart right out of my chest.
❤
Every note she sings is from an authentic, personal place, you can’t fake this & that’s why it can’t be reproduced. She is fascinating, pouring out her emotions, her truth, putting it out there to be tore down, except she wasn’t because she is the one and only Janis Joplin 💜
When you have Cass Elliot]s jaw dropped watching on from the crowd you know you are doing something right.
Have you ever hear someone sing with such emotions, power and sensibility ? Only Janis!!!
yes big mama thornton
Plenty of African American artists do and have. She imitated them well though.
Susa si è la regina
@@SP-fw1xe She imitated em? She just sung blues genre and enjoyed it, bring it to general use. But not for u huh? coz of her skin colour? As u said she did imitated- then african american imitated everything else (other genres of music, science, crafts) but not bluses. R u serious with talks like theese?
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
June 17th 1967.
The amazingly talented 24 year old Janis Joplin took the stage and changed the world in her own way.
She had been born for this evening in my opinion.
Rest in Peace sweet Janis.
Best live rock singing performance by a woman ever.
or by anyone ever
Um, you need to see & hear Big Mama Thornton do her song live..
YES !!!
@@tooties545 yupppppp
EVER!
Real, pure, passionate talent like no other.
Her voice. The soul she puts into this song is so incredible! This woman was real. So much soul it makes me cry.
I love this artist.
still love her and would of done anything for her , anything , russellbradfordbanks on f/b
I should keep count of how many times I watch this. I love the way she skips off at the end.
Me, too. From an anguished woman, to a cute little girl.
I have so much memory of janes joplin in my room mental ok? Thanks for up this vídeo
Janis was never a "nobody". She may not have been famous yet but she was a force of nature even back then!
SHE IS THE WOMAN OF THE 60TIES!!! #Backtothe60ties with #Musicwelove and #JanisJoplin She is famous until today in Germany because of #Woodstock
True That.
Tonia Ollerton agreed
She was "somebody" enough to sing at Woodstock!
A "force of nature'' is exactly right. She's blowing at category 5 here and those stomps gotta be registering on any nearby seismograph.
I've never listened to Janis Joplin before, and she's not really my sort of music, but no one can deny her incredible stage presence. What a woman!
Omg!!! What planet are you from?..."me and Bobby Magee"!!!
Saw her at Winterland in SF later. with Big Brother. She wore a short-sleeved massive blue sequined top
and just killed this song. BTW I am 74
Wish i lived those days
Janis was great. So was BBHC
@@lastnamefirst4035 The studio musicians who became her later bands were proficient but never had the heart that made her BBHC period so special.

Truely one of the greatest !!!
This gives me so many chills, she put everything she had into her performances
I love this song but do you know why it’s so distorted 😀
@@DFlacko664 Plenty of reasons least is the poor recording equipment uses in those in those days. There was excellent equipment but available for a price. Artist didn't have money to toss in a well on & hope & dream & neither did the record company. Too recording companies were being hit fast and furious because everyone wanted to be a star.
@@danrowley6934 oh ok, I kind of thought it was on purpose for some reason🤦🏽

@@DFlacko664 she was on heroin at that time ;=) and his best friend Jack Daniels for sure ;=)
People at that concert were blessed to be there! A volcano eruption of emotions!
WOW. what else can you say about this? I've never seen Janice Joplin before today, and wow, i can see why she is so popular. Passion. . Freedom. This girl makes people wish they could have as much fun as her. To bad she passed on so quickly. We need more people like her.
Perfectly said! I was fortunate enough to be raised on this music from my Nam Vet step dad... people today just don't know about music lol
You must be really young to just be hearing Janis now. Aren’t you glad you found her now? 😁☮️💋💜
@@cripplecreekqueen I'm 50! Sad to say I just found her. And as we speak, i am listening to Me & Bobby McGee. :). She is awesome. Love it.

Breaking the mold of how a singer can sing a song and being totally unique in the world of music .......... RIP ... the late great Janis Joplin ....

amen to that . . . i owned 3 CHEAP THRILLS records back in the day . . . with BALL AND CHAIN being played to pathological hours per day . . .
One of her best performances! Great song. What a legend we have lost.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Hi Margaret, what are your favorites from Janis please ? :)
She is just absolutely amazing ! gone way too soon. Can you even imagine the music this beautiful woman would’ve come out with?
Good stuff. Janis was phenomenal in her time. There ain’t been no one like her since. Rest In Peace woman.
Today's singers suck. There are a few exceptions but very few. Anything associated with rap is pure crap. Disgusting dreck. This also includes the garbage that was & remains Disco.
Natalia Sikora phenomenal singer who sing Janis Joplin songs.
@@danrowley6934 Try listening to Beth Hart. Phenomal singer.
Only Amy Winehouse has come close. Janis, Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Mamma Cas, Winehouse.. am l missing anyone? Yes the singer of Portishead is quite the woman

This performance is bringing me to tears. I truly love her.

I have watched this performance oh so many times and it always brings me great pleasure ... I guess ... that is the true definition of iconic.
Loved seeing Mama Cass Elliot in the audience, completely blown away by Janis' performance. I still have the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I hear "Piece of my Heart" just like the first time I heard it, a million years ago.
Don't think anyone ever cranked it out like she did. Love Mama Cass mouthing 'Wow!' at the end.
+Ryan James ah, I didn't know who that was ( ma bad ) thank you
She had a very unique gift, a great performer, who let you see deep inside, all the passion and pain.
I love this song 🎵 ❤️, Janis Joplin her voice is unique and sounds amazing 🎉🎉. She was a real trail blazer for the rock and roll scene 🎉🎉
Yes, and let her not be forgotten in 2024. No Southern Comfort here.
You can love her or hate her but dang, that was some strong performance right there! Amazing perception of the phrase and improvisation.
Goosebumps indeed. One of the greatest.
I've always loved the look of astonishment on Cass Elliot's face - I'm so glad they put her reaction in the movie.
That wasn't Mama Cass. Compare pics. This girl is much cuter.

No one can ever copy that voice till this day.

As most of Janis fans would know it was this performance that made her famous.Great job Janis
Oh gawd, how I wish I had seen her live. I get goose bumps every time I play this.
I absolutely love that woman (Edit: Cass Elliot) in the crowds reaction. Not only is she impressed, but its like she's just seen the barriers break for women. Janis was the inspiration for not only women but for all the outcast people who feel like they don't have a chance at being something huge.
Right on, Arlene ! Rock on 💝
Who is Mama Cass sitting with? You only catch a glimpse,.for some reason I think it might be Mike Bloomfield.
Beautifully said. 🙂
This song popped up again.🎶✌️I will enjoy it again. Her voice is like no other. Thanks for sharing.😇2022 My favorite by far.
My husband was a hardcore hippie in Marin County and hung with her …said she was a very sweet woman but pretty broken…and then,of course, there was that incredible talent

Just love the way she trots off stage like a little kid. She was so young.
We were all so young, then.
Me too❤️❤️❤️
That seriously made me cry, she was such a beautiful soul
I don't know why they all got into dangerous drugs like heroin. Stage fright? Career anxiety? Nowadays you could give them propranylol and there would likely be no fatal overdoses.
@@snowline8935 Most of them, their drug of choice was alcohol. She was an alcoholic first. I don't get the needle thing either. Just trying to fill that empty gnawing hole within. Escaping the pain because not even fame could fill it. 😢 EDIT: I'm a recovered alkie (over 20 yrs) and who knows if the opportunity presented itself at a particulary down time, if I would have done it. Outside of pot though, I had a fear of hard drugs and hallucinogens.
Candles that burn the brightest burn out the earliest. Janis, Jimmie & Morrison are examples from the amazing 60's. That era will never be duplicated.
