Seriously I don't understand why people say this wasn't a good movie. As for me, it's up there with all my childhood faves: Superman 2, Masters of the Universe, and all of em.
Lets just say the story, characters... and Supergirl herself were not good. Not expecting a masterpiece, but it could of been an origin story like Superman (1978). A few highlights were the soundtrack and Helen Slater as SG.
That goes for me and what those who don't like this classic. Just then what exactly was they expecting when they watched this. This is without any fail or doubt guaranteed always forever will be brilliant.

Classic! I wasn't around when this movie was first released in cinemas of 1984. Years after my birth (1985) I got to see it on TV. We've recorded the movie on VHS after it was repeated and years later I got it on DVD (as a christmas gift some years ago).
I've just Googled it the location and its just over 150 miles away to where I live. Thanks for letting us know. Are you sure it was filmed there? Because I'm thinking right now of visiting that place this summer 2016.
Love love love this scene. "Supergirl" is my favorite "bad" movie, and this scene alone is worth the price of admission. Really loved the way Helen Slater played the role, even if the movie overall wasn't that great. There's a reason she's still a fan favorite.
The flights in the original Superman movies still thrill me far more than CGI flights today, with the beautiful music you have perfection. They can do wirework like this still, and make the background look even cleaner and more realistic, instead of solely relying on CGI.
Those scenes were amazing! I never realized they did such a great job in this movie since I never saw the film. I don't recall the Superman movies pulling off such difficult flying moves

She's the heroine with the most graceful flying on a film EVER. 0:57 - 1:10 so beautiful and perfect, and quite the opposite of a CGI ultra speeded scene which, saddly, is the only thing filmmakers will use now for a flying scene.
The only reason I remember this movie was Helen Slater as supergirl...She was perfectly cast...and the flying scenes looked better than any done in the superman movies. Its too bad the script was terrible...this should have been a great movie.

This scene when kara zoe-el play by Helen slater to demonstrate her powers it's so incredible.
It's such a shame Chris Reeve said no to appearing in this film imo. I would have liked to see his Superman's reaction to finding out he has one surviving family member left. I like to think his Kal-El would have picked Kara up and spun her around (very carefully), laughing and crying at the same time. I don't even know if Kryptonians can or do cry when they're happy as some of us humans do, but it would have been so gratifying to see Kal happy for once.
Yeah, this movie could have been better but it's all we have at the moment. Helen Slater did a good job. They just needed a good story and a recognizable comic book villain. The cameos of Jimmy Olsen, Lucy Lane and the poster of Superman was cool, too.

I think this is a good movie. Does the plot make sense? It doesn't have the greatest plot. There's definite plot holes. But it's still a good movie! And the film score is wonderful.
I have the 2 DVD limited edition of 50.000 units worlwide and the Blue Ray of that movie. Helen was unforgetteble and thanks to Lynn Stallmaster her first ever movie. :)
Ah, this was before CGI ruined it for all future flight scenes in movies. Wish they used cable wires and cranes in Man of Steel, like they did here. Not to mention a real cape through the whole thing. Can you believe they even CGI'd the man's cape? You can't get natural folds and fabric in the wind like that! Somebody bring back the 80's. lol
It would be nice is someone could redo the composite effects in this sequence with modern effects to make it look perfect. The practical effects are awesome as they are.

The movie is not that good, but the actual flying effects were quite good for the period. Probably better than those on the Superman movies. All the research and development period went into Superman I, II and III. By 1984 they could pull off flying scenes convincingly and Supergirl benefited from that. Also Helen Sleter was a cutie.

I think the flight in these old films is more believable and well done than the new ones. Love all the rope tricks. Never see that in the new films

This scene looks so realistic flying..how relax she moves in the air..so light weighted..so bouncy..

Personally, I thought she was spot-on with SuperGirl, she had lots of charm, and I thought she came off as genuine!
I believe she can act excellently, but I hate it when people do the "I'd like to see you do better", because sometimes they actually CAN do better.
I like jerry goldsmith soundtrack on this movie. Its so epic.
