Love it when Epiphones are allowed to be Epiphones instead of reasonably priced "inspirations" of their Gibson counterparts. Great throwback to Epiphones golden era with that hourglass headstock and other vintage appointments. Great sounding P90s too!
I’m loving both. I find. My way to Epiphone. Because of the ‘inspired by...’ but have since bought a casino (this one) and a riviera (Colin’s next video)
I picked up one of these in blue recently and have been in love with it since. Beautiful neck, GREAT sounding pickups - just a joy to play. Great review mate, you covered all the bases!
I really enjoy watching your videos. There is something visceral about the way you touch the guitars, admire them, your honest opinion. You are somewhat of an acquired taste, but you have an endearing quality in your personality and just seem like an honest guitar lover. You have a fan!
That hands down sounds like one of the nicest guitars I've heard you play so far. I had one of those Gibson Les Paul 50s tributes in cherry with p90s and that thing was superb, I agree with the worn finish , I think it makes them seem a bit more resonant. Keep the awesome vids coming mate.
Considering John Lennon pulled the finish off his for that very reason (he was encouraged do do so by Donovan), it makes sense that they’ve made a version of the Casino with a nod to that.
A free service to all right handed guitar players out there, all models included, especially Fender's $ 2000 dollars that come with those specially made soft shell case's. Free custom ageing. I'll be glad to age it for you with my multi 4-10 stage controlled process, just pay shipping both ways. Playability gaurentted.
One of the better guitar reviews I've seen! Keep them coming! I'm actually shopping for a Casino at the moment, great getting insight from someone who has such a wonderful knowledge base before purchasing, definitely helps in avoiding "buyer's remorse".
Have had 4 or 5 Casinos, and they are my favorite. Unidentified rattles can be a pain to locate...however this is a good problem to have as the more it rattles the better the resonance the guitar has. When removing pups, it's imperative to get the tightness just right as metal pup covers do not conform exactly to body contours. A slim padding or if needed / wanted a shim will eliminate any rattles from this area. Pickup selector switch can vibrate. Bridge retaining wire can rattle. Personally, after shimmying the neck pup, rattles disappeared...accept the stock pup selector switch still vibrates at times. Try playing Beatles "Sun King" on your Casino...nails that tone just right. Great video...as usual😎👍 😎👍❤🖖 Love brother
The first casino I had worn also had a rattle. I spent a week trying to find it. Went to the music store and tried two more and they had the exact same rattle. This second guitar seems pretty good.
Bravo! I'm not usually one to gush over UA-cam videos, but you have the best music gear reviews this side of Franken Stomp--they're fun, informative, reasonably free of guitarist woo, and a great way to spend time. I should add that you're a fantastic, tasteful player, too. Well done. Take a bow.
Thanks for these kind words 😊.. very much appreciated! I’m having fun making this stuff and hopefully it’s improving my playing which is a bonus and one day I hope to be able to live up to your outrageous claims that I am fantastic 🤞 Thanks again for your support... I thank you, thank you (bows) 😎👍🎸
@@theguitaristas Not outrageous at all. Of all the You Tube gear demos that I've watched, and it's a lot, yours are the only ones that make me forget that I'm listening to a gear review and just enjoy the music. I'd happily buy a recording from you and put it in my music collection. That certainly lives up to my definition of fantastic.
Some people at youtube should get their ass seriously whipped. How come I found this channel just yesterday, after two years of intensive watching of guitar stuff? Just absolutely fabulous videos you do. Could this channel be the best of the best. Of the best. Just amazing, thank you so very much and keep the videos coming.
Hey Petri so glad you found us! 😎👍🎸 wow thanks for the incredibly kind words ☺️ i have only really been doing this for about 8 months but thanks to the support of guitar nuts like you the algorithm is giving us a lift now... so thanks for dropping by, and for commenting, and supporting the channel it’s really really appreciated!
Well, you finally talked me into it. Long story short, my dad recently passed away, so I’ve been in a bit of an “eff it, life is too short” mode, so I’ve bought an old Hondo II 732 Les Paul copy, pieced together a Noventa Telecaster from brand new parts I got from the STRATosphere, and I pulled the trigger on one of these Worn Casinos, also in Olive Drab. Very different to anything else I have, great sound, LOVE that you can feel it vibrate, LOVE the super light weight. I ran the serial number yesterday, found it corresponded to my dad’s 80th birthday. She’ll be with me for a very long time. Your review has stuck with me for a good bit.
I obviously haven't seen every Casino, but I have seen quite a few and, to the best of my knowledge, they're all like the one in your video--completely hollow without even a post or block under the bridge which many otherwise hollowbody guitars have. Electronic work on these, and semi-hollows with holes under the pickups are a piece of cake. Some semi-hollows don't have the cutout for the pickups and just have a hole for the pickup lead. This is when you have to work through the F-hole and it's a lot harder.
Interesting is that this new version of the casino has normally less hot pickups than the previous versions with natural, cherry or burst finishes made in China. These were having pick-ups which with certain amps could be a bit muffled or muddy, particularly the neck pick-up. The pickups on this model felt very different when I tried them. More defined.
I was just watching this review again when a story about Lennon's Casino came to mind. A lot of people paid a premium for the "Lennon Casino" The story I've read is Lennon was in the midst of a pharmaceutical experiment when he got "busy mits" and started in sanding the finish off his Casino in order to give it a brighter tone...WHAT THE!!? Anyway, the story I read had Lennon dropping it off at a friend's who did guitar finishing and had the guitar properly sanded then sealed with some kind of clear coat, it actually looks like a matt clear to my eye. I read another story which claimed Lennon brought to the same friend and asked him strip it because, and again, he wanted to brighten up the tone. The stories are both plausible but I tend to believe the latter. Everybody loves a good classic effed up rock star story don't they? Still, I never understood the alleged reason, why would you want to screw with a perfect hollow body with two P90s in order to make it "brighter"?? I think Lennon just wanted his guitar to look different from Paul and George's which all had the same sort of tobacco burst finish. My favorite Beatles Casino riff is DRUM ROLL PLEASE...BUMPADUMP TSHHHHH!! THE OPENOING SALVO TO REVOLUTION!! There you have it cats, believe whatever you believe!! Jack ~'()'~ Canada home of the 50 mile long trucker convoy!!
why do you think John's sanding... he may of felt he he was "playing a coffin"... so what ya gonna do ? 'let it breath' aftrr all not a peep outta anyone when Paul wiped his hands of the hubris and Let it Be'
He removed the finish off the Casino...and his Gibson acoustic...on the advice of Donovan after being in India. He'd taught both McCartney & Lennon the basics of fingerpicking on Donovan's Martin. They liked the sound of his guitar and Lennon and Harrison both striped the finish off their Casinos. Lennon's Casino actually had another psychedelic finish on the back of the Casino during 67-early/mid 68 that was done by the Fool...same group that painted Clapton's SG & Lennon Gibson. The friend who help Lennon refinish a guitar was actually his Ric...the 3 pickup model he used on Sullivan. It was originally natural, but Lennon like black and his friend knew someone who did car refinishing and that's how the Ric became black. Allegedly, Lennon was talking about having the Casino refinished back to it's original sunburst finish before he was killed. Harrison's still is in it's sanded down condition.
@@ptrgreeny I'd read some of that, but didn't know most, so thank you for that! There's so many versions of just about every waking moment of their lives and it's difficult to know what the truth is! Everything you posted sounds reasonable and as such makes sense is is most likely fact. Take care bumnote! Jack ~'()'~
One year late to the show but man…this is what reviews should be like. I bought one ten minutes after watching your video. Also, great playing! I subbed immediately
I purchased a Casino Coupe a few years back, and it's just remarkable how nice of a guitar it is. The 339 shape is so comfortable, and while the fit and finish isn't the greatest and it needed a good setup (don't all guitars?), it is an absolutely fantastic player. Wonderful guitar for the couch while watching a movie. I've thought about getting a full-size Casino, but honestly, I'm not sure why I'd need it!
Thank you for reminding me how those P90s sound... in a fabulous semi... back in 1989 or so, I imported from the USA, with help of a friend, a 1965 Gibson ES330TD serial 421180 ... stolen in 2002 ... It was honeysuckle sunburst (orange to yellow) with gorgeous P90s - I miss that guitar :) Everyone needs P90s in their collection
That's sad dude... I hope maybe one day it will turn up, but in the meantime maybe get one of these affordable versions to fill the void. Cheers Pat, thanks for supporting man!
Really enjoyed your review! So much so, that I just got my Worn Casino today, and it's everything that you said and more. I have owned many guitars over the years, and this is something quite special and unique despite its Budget status. Epiphone should commend you (and reward you) for bringing this guitar to the attention of the public. Tasty playing as well. Thanks again for inviting us into your universe.
I've watched this video about 20 times over the last couple of weeks trying to hold off buying this guitar. Broke today and ordered one. Hopefully will see it this week. Keep up the awesome work 👍
I love your show, you do a great job giving an honest, straightforward review, I appreciate your personality as well, subscribed, wish I had found your show sooner, great playing, detailed, blunt, straightforward review, awesome video.
I just recently purchased this same exact guitar model and color. I love the tone and playability of this model. Prior to this, I owned a standard Epi Casino in sunburst that was a beautiful guitar. Unfortunately, the heavy finish just left that guitar feeling dead and lifeless. I put Lollar P90s in it and still could not bond with it. So, I sold it and just figured the Casino wasnt for me. Then, on a whim I tried this one and was very pleasantly surprised. This is what i envisioned a Casino sounding like! So, I brought it home and I love it! Such a great guitar! Great review, as always!
I love that the Beatles didn’t always play the most expensive top end gear (hand-made one offs, etc). The Beatle bass, for example, was not an expensive instrument, in many ways not that great an instrument. And he just sounded great on it, his way of playing brought out the best in it. He stuck with it until he split his time with his Rickenbacker bass in the later 60s. His original was stolen, but the replacement he got in the mid-60s he still plays, to this day. Just goes to show you, you can make incredible music on whatever you can afford at the time.
If you can find one get the Gary Clark Jr ‘Blak n Blu’ with Gibson pups and hardware. It’s savage but cleans up real nice with just a roll of the volume pot. It’s become one of my favourite guitars.
I've got an Epi Casino from '98 (I think). Unsung plant, Korea made, in Cherry & mine's a complete hollow body (as I thought they all were). Mine has a very different tone from my '96 Gibson 335, just as one would expect from a hollowbody with P90's, compared to a center block with 'buckers. Lovely warm, super articulate, never muddy tone from those sweet P90 pups too.
I've had my Casino (Korean) since 1995 and I love it. Always one of my favorites. I used to have a '68 USA model that played good but never sounded as nice. BTW, I hear a lot of Peter Green in your playing and that's a good thing !
John, Paul, & George all had Casinos...Paul is in a recent (sometime in the last 20 years) interview showing his off...telling us it is still his favorite electric guitar...he loves the raw sound...which you can hear brilliantly displayed in Sgt Pepper Reprise...P-90s have a bark and a bite unlike any humbucker or single-coil...what is interesting is John Lennon loved his guitars...and could afford any guitar...yet he loyally kept his Casino as his main guitar till the end of the Beatles...while in India...Donovan had convinced him to have the lacquer removed...telling him that the guitar would sound much better this way...and you can see it on full display...on the rooftop concert
McCartney had an earlier casino with the different inspired by style headstock Lennon and Harrison got their later models together both of which had the longer Epi headstock style.
3/1/2022 I have a couple of questions. 1. Why did they use P-90 pickups? I have a Wild Cat Royal (white pearl finish with all gold accents and fittings) I sort of don't like the P-90's on it. They do sound good on the Casino. 2. can you switch over to Humbuckers? Of course you would have to modify or remove the pick guard. 3. What about adding a Digby tremolo, like the wild cat has? The Wild Cat does not sound so good unplugged, unlike the Casino. This may actually be the guitar I've been looking for, many years. Thanks for the great video. I like the straight forward, laid back approach you use, so I'll allow for the slip of an occasional f bomb, usually I don't. I checked quickly for availability in the USA, The blue one, my preference, is not available right now. Guitar Center wants $499.00, right on the top of my budget for a guitar. then add a hard shell case, they go for a bit more than $100.00 ;-)
Cheers Robert, I think with the Casino here it's one of those occasions where we have a guitar that just works really well and I definitely wouldn't change a thing about it. I haven't played a Wildkat so can't comment on them apart from its a very cool looking guitar!! 😎👍 PS sorry about the language!
@@theguitaristas No problem, I sometimes slip and say things i don't approve of, the sailor in me comes out when I get mad or frustrated. I recently blocked a UK guy who used the f bomb in nearly every sentence, that's what I was talking about. ;-)
I have had mine almost a week, and it is a SPECTACULAR guitar... I've had 6-8 Epiphone 335's, Dots, etc... These Casinos blow them all out of the water. Something about the combo of a full hollow body and P90's, just works, and works incredibly well.
Fab little video, thanks. Really want to get inspired by a Casino now. Lovely Beatle tones on the outro! P.S. also loved your dissection of the Epi 335 👍
Awesome review! After taking a break from playing the past couple of years, I just bought a worn olive drab epi casino just like the one in the review. Loving the color and finish more and more every day. It has the tone i have always wanted and ignited my passion for playing again! Your review was informative, well rounded and quite interesting. Thanks! So glad i found your channel. Rock on! 🎸💪
Just found your channel, thanks Colin. I like the way you carefully inspect the guitar and then do a little disassembly. It looks like about the only build issue you found was a small spot on the upper bout binding. And then you found a buzz on the B string I think like on the 10th fret. I'm an acoustic guy looking for an electric and there are a bunch of decent MIM strats and teles locally on CL in the 5 to 600 dollar range. I can get the Casino you reviewed for 499 US at a local store that includes setup at their repair shop. Thinking I'll have them inspect it before purchase for build quality. A light fret dressing is OK, but anything beyond forget it. The 2023 update reportedly has improved PUPs and POTS. It's got to have a decent bridge and nut. Don't want to have to get on the replace this and that treadmill. Want it to be fine out of the box, which can be hit or miss with imports.
There are subtle differences between the Epi worn and it’s Chinese big brother. The p/u’s in the natural/sunburst are much hotter (11.7) and there are support posts inside the body cavity, as the worn casino is totally hollow, and it also weighs in about a pound heavier, and costs more money.
Revisiting this video. Great work Colin. Got one of these myself. Love it. Needed a setup. Was a bit ordinary until then. But now awesome. Really enjoyable ‘woody’ sound as you say.
Hi Colin. The pots used by Epiphone these days are Asian-made metric versions branded CTS. In fact, there are indications that the Imperial CTS branded pots in many guitars (unlike Gibsons, of course, which although they MAY be made by CTS, or Bourne etc, are ‘Gibson branded’) are also likely to be made by CTS’s Asian facilities - like a lot of other components on many brands. Keeps the costs down and the profits up. In my experience the pots seem just as good as the (previous OR current? 🤔) US-made versions, unlike Epiphone’s toggle switches (loud and ‘clicky’) and, in particular, the wiring which is not of particularly brilliant quality. And, yes, all Casinos have a sodding great access hole beneath each pickup, obviating the need (as you know from your initial experience with the 335😩) to struggle, using the f-hole.
Cheers Rob, I realised after I'd said 'USA' CTS pots that they may not be made there... but as you say they do work unlike the hit and miss stuff they used to use in Epis and Gibsons!. Thanks for checking in man the support is appreciated! 👍🎸
The situation is actually a little different on the 339-sized Casino coupe. The neck pickup sits over the neck tenon, so the sides of that pickup opening had to be partly blocked off. Both are lovely guitars though, with the coupe having just a hair less “woof” acoustically, and slightly better upper fret access.
@ Steve Rolfe Many thanks, very helpful comment ! Do you know if the Casino Coupe has the same electronics (CTS pots and moderately hot pickups) than the bigger Casino Worn in Olive ? Thank you very much in advance for your answer !
@@claireriou256 my apologies for the late response… The electronics are the same, although the hardware (tuners, bridge, etc.) seem to be a little better on the couple of Worn Casinos I’ve sampled. I didn’t care because I prefer the form factor of the Coupe, and put Ratio tuners and a Gotoh bridge on mine. Ratios are amazing- the predictable tuning (half-turn equals a half-step) is addictive.
Colin strikes again! I went back and forth on this one forever, actually forgot about it for a little bit then watched this video again. Arrived a few weeks ago. Really fun guitar, especially for the money. Thanks for the deep dive on this one. Cya Friday!
I have a natural finish Casino I got on a trade several years ago. It collected dust as I acquired it for next to nothing. I’ve started playing it and it’s now one of my favorites. Mine is from 2017… and it’s not perfect. The tuners were some of the worst I’ve ever seen. I changed them for Grover locking tuners and it’s now very stable. Has the original look too. The pickups are a little lacking.. especially the neck. But you’re right. It’s got a distinct sound and a character of its own. I just made a custom wiring harness… 50s wiring, PIO caps…. Switch craft jack and switch. And decided on Lollar P90s. They seem to be the ones people go for when it comes to Casinos. And they’re not bad price wise. Cheaper than the Duncan’s. I’ll be putting it together next week. Waiting for a full day off. Lol. I think it’s going to be a hell of a guitar when I’m done with it.
What you mention near the beginning about overlooking a given model for years and coming around to it at a later date is exactly what happened to me with the Casino. I bought a Made-in-China one preowned in 2018, ironically turning loose of the Epiphone ES-335 Pro to make way for it. (Mine was natural like the ones John Lennon and George Harrison owned and modified.) I didn’t keep it longer than a year, between the feedback issue (I like to use Plexi-style distortion), the heel beginning at the 18th fret and the realization that I only got it for the Beatles/Rolling Stones iconography associated with it. Since 2019, I have played a vintage-class ES-330 circa ‘67 (belonging to the host of band practices where I play) and largely had the same reactions (plus the pickups go out of phase in mid position). Still a fun model to play when I get to pick it up. It has helped me to ascertain that I’m a centerblock kind of player, and I now (as of November 2023) have owned for a year a Yamaha knockoff of the 335 & 345, an SA-2000 from 1980 when I was born.
New subscriber here, love your indepth and informative videos. I have owned four Japanese made Casinos (3x Matsumoku & one Terada made Elitist) and a 64 Gibson 330 in the past, sadly don't have one at present. I rewired the Elitist and one of the Matsumoku ones, a fiddly job but being fully hollow the harnesses went through the pickup holes. Most Casino's are fully hollow, some of the Chinese and Korean ones have a sound post/block behind the rear pickup connecting top to back. The major difference is usually how the neck is connected to the body. The USA/Terada made ones have a solid Mahogany neck block, whereas most others have a neck tenon sitting in an open block. Anyway, keep up the great work, I'm really enjoying your content, and looking forward to the Epiphone Riviera review👍
Love this model, so much mojo at such a small price. I did swap the pickups for a lower output Antiquity II set, and got a bridge that wouldn't rattle as much. The experience is so much better than before, I really feel like I focused the tone of it significantly with those two moves. Shimming the pickups is really important to focus the sound as well.
I have had mine for the best part of a year. It is one of my favorites. So fun to play and the neck, frets and board are perfect and the pickups are a perfect match with great tone.
That playing at the end: Thats what they mean when its said the guitar really sings. You make it sing, that collaboration is working! Thats so cool, i could listen to you play that guitar like that all day.
Great guitars. My 1st proper electric guitar. It's versatility blew me away. Got a sunburst about 9 years ago. I know people bang on about issues with feedback when you turn the gain up, but that's all part of the fun. Finding the sweet spot is so rewarding. I was really lucky getting mine as the last one in the shop before the dealer dropped Epiphone for a couple of years for £230, but still great value at today's price. As you demonstrated at the begining, its accoustic abilities are fantastic. Great sound & perfect for a quiet noodle on the sofa when you don't want to get the amp & cable out. If you haven't got one, get one. Really a fun & versatile guitar that is much underrated. Although mine has a glossy finish, it is noticeable that the finish is starting to almost sink into the surface of the wood, almost forming hundreds of tine pits that give it a lived in, duller look. Already waiting for next week's video. I have promised myself a Gibson Les Paul 50s when I fully retire, but my Epiphone ones are really good. Do I want to part with the extra cash?
That's ok, I might just have to get the Epiphone 50s, but fancy a Les Paul Gold Top with P90s. Noticable how much cheaper guitars are now in the EU compared to the UK, so I feel a road trip coming on. I will try to use the logical money saving issue to buy both guitars on my wife, but might have to offer up with an overnight stay in a nice hotel!
Excellent review. Subscribed immediately. Down to earth while still thorough. Right mix of technical info, exploratory surgery and unshreddy playing demo. Added a Casino to my wishlist on the strength of this vid.
cheers Colin, just bought the olive drab casino, not yet played it, its sitting there waiting. liked your review both no bull delivery and spec. made me look forward to playing it tomorrow. Just started watching your channel and like your presentation . keep it up and keep my interest. all the best mate.
Watching this one again, and must note that your playing was inspired on this one. I've listened to you let yourself go here at least a "musician's dozen" times, and have felt a tremendous lift upon each occasion. Thank you. edit: an idea or concept has formed in my head that I simply can't shake, so I must share it with you. The concept of "Guitaristas" and just whom, is one of them, and how. Namely, as to what could be done with your show to reduce costs of production, while also generating more engaging or curious "content". It strikes me, that being a Guitarista is in part a semi-formal inquisition into the nuanced componentry of a guitar, and that a good proportion of guitarists would love the chance to go through the "Guitaristas" process. What I'm driving at, is for you to host a fellow guitarist/Guitarista on your show, and have them bring one of their favorite guitars, which they're comfortable having put through the Guitaristas process of artistic inquisition. Them then going away from the experience, knowing more about their instrument than they did when they arrived, such as the pickup readings, neck profile, thickness, etc. Then maybe they do a little playing using your, or a dedicated Guitaristas pedalboard/amp setup, for more direct comparison between fellow Guitaristas instruments. Or, for that matter, between a guests numerous guitars(because most of us not only have more than one, but also more than one favorite) on their potential numerous visits. Some musicians, of course, would recoil at the idea of having their guitar partially taken apart, and gone over like you do with ones you but, but others, would love it!
Cheers man that’s appreciated! 😁🙏 great idea that but a whole lot of time and extra effort is needed to make this kind of stuff happen. More guests will follow though for sure!
My first thought too watching this channel for the first time! I've just acquired a Warn in Ebony - very pleased, though I have dropped on a (black finish) tunomatic aftermarket roller bridge (for £16) which I think has made it sound and look even better.
Just saw your comparison video regarding ES335, 339 and other one, but this video made me question more what the hell I should do LOL, thanks for being so honest, so true, for taking long and not being obivous like other videos and video streamers. Congrats! Just a question, would you put humbuckers on it to avoid noise issues (and discard the p90s)? I really like the colour and weight.
Coming back to this video to say thanks for a great review. I played one in the store. Came home and thought about it and took to reviews to do my research. Best review I’ve seen of it, I agree on all points. I got it, and have played it every day since. Just love what they did with it.
Hi Colin, great review as always! I have some trouble with my back and seriously thinking about an Epi Casino, possibly a Casino Coupe which seems even lighter and more comfortable. Cheers from Italy!
I think I heard something that one of Beatles said that the Casino was the best songwriter guitar because it was loud enough to be hear unplugged but quite enough to not bother the people in the hotel.
Excellent video, thank you. I have been considering an Epi ES 339 when I can get one, but I also fancy a guitar with P90s again, having sold my Gibson SG with P90s a couple of years ago, so this could be the one to go for. Are the PUPs unduly noisy with hum when plugged in but not playing?
Hey Anthony, the only time I really notice the noise personally is when the amp is cranked with a few drive pedals up front... but it’s a visceral experience and definitely not one to shy away from! I guess I also step on the tuner to cut the signal chain when not playing and that shuts it up completely! Cheers man.... go for it! 😜👍🎸
Hello Sir, thanks for helping me deciding! Tomorrow i'll try a Casino in a shop, and if my hands agree with my eyes and ears, i will have one soon. Great vid!
For 400 Quid , it's amazing. Overall, the budget guitar market has increased its quality 10 fold. Fair statement? When I was a kid in the 70s and 80's, the budget guitar market put out crap. I'm buying a lot of beautiful guitars niow for under 1000. :)
Picked up my vintage sunburst casino this weekend, and it has a couple of little buzzes, im sure the wood breathes and this is part of its character? really enjoyed the vid 👍
I was thinking of swapping out my pickups but your readings with the multimeter were really close to the aftermarket pickups I was looking at. Will save the money and effort. If I want a hot sound I'll just play my Les Paul.
Another great review. Bravo, mate! I own a Vintage brand VSA 500 semi hollow and I love it. Never owned a hollow body though. I am keen on like a ‘64 Gibson ES-175, but my budget won’t allow for that just at the moment. Keep up the great work, my six string friend.
one crucial detail in the new ones is the neck joint position. there are long necks and short necks. the old ones were long necks and are better for upper fret access.
I bought one of these while waiting for my ordered ES 335 to come in and I have not been able to put it down. It may be my favorite guitar. I love it plugged in or unplugged. Keep up the great work.
Just not an Epiphone person. Decades of trying them as they come around, giving them a go in shops, even borrowing or 'temporary trading' among friends. Each their own, as should be...but THIS particular guitar with it's P-90's, I like very much. I just may become a THIS Epiphone person. So thankful for your videos.
Good to hear, yes give it a go!.... and if you haven't tried any of the latest (post 2020) inspired by Gibson range give them a try as they are a real cut above, particularly the Les Pauls. Cheers for support! :)
Superb!.. As you asked, my 1984 MIJ Casino is fully hollow. My pickups were slightly microphonic so I had them lightly dipped in wax and they are fine (learn where to stand on stage) feedback is more controllable rather than screeching. I've take off the scratchplate, think it looks better. Over the last 30 odd years of ownership I have found that it's a very versatile guitar more so than most others, on a par with a strat. Use the volume knobs and tone knobs more on this guitar than any other to help shape the sound. It's a guitar you'll find that fits in where the strat, tele, LP just doesn't and it can do all that those can do too. Another one thing that seems to be part of ownership of a casino is they like to be played, they play in after about an hour and then they almost play themselves, put it away for a week or two, month year and you'll have to play it in again, it responds the more the longer you play it you'll find. If more people knew how useful these were Epiphone couldn't make enough of them but then again us casino owners have our own secret. We'll presented program as usual, thanks for sharing your casino with us. 👍
Cheers Steve, thanks for sharing this, I've only played mine while filming this week but already I understand what you're saying... it's unlike anything else I own so glad I finally discovered what I've been missing! :)
Thanks for this review! Do you know how Epiphone gets this satin finish, what sort of paint ? I have a Worn blue one, love it, and would love to get the same finish on other guitars
@@theguitaristas I don't know I'm new to guitar finish, I've always used them as they are without thinking about it, they were always "varnished" until I got this one. Looks like it's just paint on wood, but I was wondering if it was a special paint. Or just the paint they normally use before applying "varnish" or whatever it's called. "clear coated" as you said. The videos I see of people painting theirs , with spray paint, doesn't give that casino look, it completely covers the original wood.
New subscriber here, another quality video mate. That Casino sounds fantastic, the P90'S are wonderful. Sounds much nicer than the 335 to my ears at least. I had been looking at a Gretsch with P90s but that sound has given me something to think about.
Cheers Brian, thanks for sub and support! I’ve not tried a fully hollow body Gretsch myself yet but that’s got to be o the list now to see how they compare to this little beauty! 😎👍🎸
Just taken delivery of one this week. Love the feel and sound of it! However there are some noticeable tool marks/lines on the neck. I have 4 other guitars, all with faultlessly carved necks. It doesn’t effect playability, but i wondered if this type of QC issue was common and to be accepted with this style of guitar (worn) and price point?
All hollow. One of the defining characteristics! I have 5... 1999 Peerless MiK sunburst w Alnico V P90s 2009 Inspired By JL Revolution w Gibson USA P90s 2007 Elite Sunburst (terada japan) w gibson USA p90s 2015 Inspired by JL 1965 w gibson USA P90s 2019 standard Qingdao made w P90 pro The 2 IbJL and Elite are used professionally. I had an olive drab on order for 7 months... gave up and got a Guild Starfire I SC instead. Also a cool guitar btw. Good video! Cheers from the US.
Love the solo you're doing their mate. You were sort of playing, "Don't Let Me Down," by the Beatles, then added a phrase or two from "GIve Peace a Chance," in the solo. Combining two Lennon songs is really neat there. I wonder how those pickups sound really distorted. Probably really good.
George and John got their Casinos at the same time. Following through on The Beatles' Casino connection, I love your 'Don't Let Me Down' riff, and improving.
@@theguitaristas Paul got his Casino in late 64, and George and John got theirs in the Spring of 1966 (John's had a bigsby, but in the end, for reasons unknown, they ended up swapping their Casinos with each other).
Both John & George got their Casino's at the same time. Both are 65 models. George's has the Bigsby. They both stripped their Casino's back to bare wood in 1968. It was their Gibson Jumbo J-160s that got swapped, not the Casino's.
I’m a beginner and just playing acoustic at the moment , I’m looking at getting and electric guitar , I really like the casino, would you recommend for a beginner ?
Hey Ivan, yes no reason not to go for the casino especially if you are used to the larger size of acoustic guitar. But you will notice how much easier it is to play! 😎👍
Was listening to Don't Let Me Down earlier tonight, what a great coincidence finding this channel just now. Excellent work, you're a fun, informative host. No doubt you'll have great success here on UA-cam. Subscribed!
Cheers Colin- I think I'm going to pick one of these Bad Biys up. I've never had a Casino/335-esque guitar before & for the price now may be the time? I've fallen in love w/ P90s- again...& a Hollow Body intrigues me. I have a feeling this is the one. I'm one of those clods that plays straight out of the box- I'm learing by watching your channel. But I have a long way to go before I start fiddlin' about. You're an inspiration Brother. Keep on Keepin' On!
PS, My Epi Casino in Worn Black arrived a couple of weeks ago. It was fantastic right out of the box. It stays in tune, the neck profile fits like a glove- I love the worn finish & the Dog Ears sound just like they should- bite & sizzle when you dime it & warm & rich when you back off the volume. It has tones I didn't even know I wanted but now that I have them via this guitar I would never want to do w/out them. Like you said- who knew? I'm usually not one for naming my guitars but I call this one Bully...Ha! Thanks Colin...Deeply appreciate the info...
I'm a 70 year old man who hasn't touched a guitar in 45 years. I'm considering getting one again and starting all over. Is the Casino (£400/$700) a reasonable guitar for me to purchase, learn on, and play around on? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Hey Daniel, great to hear you're thinking of picking up a guitar again after all these years!... as someone who had a (not quite so) long layoff myself I can tell you it's just like riding a bike and it will all come flooding back in a moment. This Casino is a great guitar and I see no reason not to recommend it... has the advantage of having a decent unplugged voice too. I say make sure you get something that makes you feel good every time you look at it and pick it up and you can't go wrong. My other word of caution... be careful if you watch this channel too much you will soon be shopping for 2nd and 3rd guitars.... 😆👍 Good luck and let us know how you get on!
Great video - subscribed and watched many more - great content, great honest delivery, keeps me coming back for more! I own the Blak n Blu Gary Clark Jr Casino with Gibson P90s and Switchcraft hardware! Blue burst has washed out a bit due to leaving it in sunlight for a bit by mistake, but it makes it mine and different! Great guitars, I love playing mine. Was the last one out of 3 UK websites I was following them on and managed to get it £200 below Retail! Absolute bargain. I've seen them advertised for twice the original retail price on the used market, which is hardly ever! Rocket horse .... it seems to find one! Keep the videos coming 👌 love em 🎶🎸🎶

Love it when Epiphones are allowed to be Epiphones instead of reasonably priced "inspirations" of their Gibson counterparts. Great throwback to Epiphones golden era with that hourglass headstock and other vintage appointments. Great sounding P90s too!
I couldn't agree more.... Inspired by Epiphone is a wonderful thing! :)
I’m loving both. I find. My way to Epiphone. Because of the ‘inspired by...’ but have since bought a casino (this one) and a riviera (Colin’s next video)
I’ll say it here: Epiphone > Gibson
@@theguitaristas What is the finish on the worn casinos? Is it a stain or nitro doesn’t look like a ploy finish??

You summed it up perfectly. Don’t think about a particular guitar ever, then suddenly you have to have one!
I'm on this video now for that sole reason. lol.
I picked up one of these in blue recently and have been in love with it since. Beautiful neck, GREAT sounding pickups - just a joy to play. Great review mate, you covered all the bases!
Cheers Spud, yes truly a great guitar! 😎👍👍

Cheers Paul!
Considering John Lennon pulled the finish off his for that very reason (he was encouraged do do so by Donovan), it makes sense that they’ve made a version of the Casino with a nod to that.

Great video...as usual😎👍
😎👍❤🖖
Love brother
Cheers Richard... good info to have as I think I shall be playing this one quite a bit!
The first casino I had worn also had a rattle. I spent a week trying to find it. Went to the music store and tried two more and they had the exact same rattle. This second guitar seems pretty good.
Any idea how to eliminate the pickup selector rattle?

Sounds like guitar found you!… a fabulous guilt free guitar to treasure in your dad’s memory 👍👍
@@theguitaristas That’s the idea👍 Cheers, mate!
More defined.
really appreciate getting a chance to here the acoustic sound too.
I've dreamed of owning a Casino since watching The Beatles play theirs since I was a little kid! Finally I can afford one.
Yessss,!!!!!!
Yes!… and it’s great too! 😎👍
I enjoy your relaxed reviews. Keep up the good work....the Casino is now on my "waiting" list !
My favorite Beatles Casino riff is DRUM ROLL PLEASE...BUMPADUMP TSHHHHH!!

why do you think John's sanding... he may of felt he he was "playing a coffin"... so what ya gonna do ?

It was honeysuckle sunburst (orange to yellow) with gorgeous P90s - I miss that guitar :)

Even then he didn't buy the rickenbacker the only reason he used it was because they sent him a free one
The Beatles Casinos were USA-made. There was no such thing as Made in China knockoffs in the 60s
Love the sound of these pickups, my favorite! Now I have to find one. My favorite color, green.
I've had my Casino (Korean) since 1995 and I love it. Always one of my favorites. I used to have a '68 USA model that played good but never sounded as nice. BTW, I hear a lot of Peter Green in your playing and that's a good thing !
Cheers Bob, thanks for kind words that’s appreciated! 😎👍🎸
Cheers Tony, I thought I saw a pic of Paul and George both playing the earlier headstock but I am quite often wrong! 😂👍🎸

I have a couple of questions.

Cheers Gary... it’s the worn for me! 😎
Revisiting this video. Great work Colin. Got one of these myself. Love it. Needed a setup. Was a bit ordinary until then. But now awesome. Really enjoyable ‘woody’ sound as you say.
Simply the best guitar reviewer bar none. I’m having one of these, cheers Colin for widening my horizons
One of the nicest sounding guitars ever demo’d on this Channel.
I’m liking before I’m even watching!! I’ve had my eye on this guitar for a while now!
Cheers man!
Cheers Steve... just started filming that one so coming up in a couple of weeks!
Hey Col, just because I know you love olive: there´s a Harley Benton semi hollow with some sort of bigsby in olive drab. Something for you ?
Sounds great, I bought one, the standard color, and changed the electronics on it, sounds even better.
Thanks Robert, not sure if I will mess with this one yet but good stuff to know! 👍😎🎸
@@theguitaristas if I did nothing electronic, a simple precision slotting of the saddles and a setup would have been perfectly fine imo. Enjoy yours!
That Casino is beautiful!
Your jam sessions are some of my favorite! 👍 🎸
Thanks that’s really appreciated! 😊👍🎸
This is just a superb quality video all round. Really really enjoyable, new fan here
Cheers James, thanks for the support and kind words it’s appreciated! 😎👍
I have had mine for the best part of a year. It is one of my favorites. So fun to play and the neck, frets and board are perfect and the pickups are a perfect match with great tone.
That playing at the end:
Thats what they mean when its said the guitar really sings.
You make it sing, that collaboration is working!
Thats so cool, i could listen to you play that guitar like that all day.
😊🙏
Cheers Paul, Re next week am going to compare it with the Epiphone 50’s so I will try not to shatter your dream! 😜🎸👍
Cheers Mark, thanks for the sub and support man it's appreciated!... working on another film including the Casino for next week so watch this space!
Are you going to leave it as is or do any upgrades like on the es-335? Hoping to get one of these, maybe put a bigsby on it :)!
Hey Ivar, I like this one exactly as it is so will leave it be I think :)
I was thinking of picking one of these up.
Nice video and review, skål!
cheers Colin,
just bought the olive drab casino, not yet played it, its sitting there waiting. liked your review both no bull delivery and spec. made me look forward to playing it tomorrow. Just started watching your channel and like your presentation . keep it up and keep my interest.
all the best mate.
Cheers man!
@@theguitaristas Gotcha, from an outside perspective it can be difficult to assess what would cause a greater or lesser workload. Carry on!
I bought one because of the price. I kept it and it has become my favorite guitar because it is lovely.
This channel is great. It is like if Jackson Lamb did guitar reviews.
🤣 🤣👍
Cheers man! 😁👍
chilled out tones sure set the mood for a great review… luv the look of the guitar and it sure does sounds like a keeper …enjoy
Cheers Gerry 👍😎🎸
Cheers man.... go for it! 😜👍🎸
Hey colin. I already love your playing style, but this guitar really sounds great in your hands. Cheers.
Cheers man! 😁👍
24:40 it sounds incredible man, I LOVE the way you play. It always inspires me. P90s are your sound.
😊🙏
I love how lemon oil makes the fingerboard look dark and lush !
Picked up my vintage sunburst casino this weekend, and it has a couple of little buzzes,
im sure the wood breathes and this is part of its character?
really enjoyed the vid 👍
Cheers Gary... I totally get that as after playing it the week it's already one of my favourites!
Great review man. Played one of these in the store today and loved it, this review pushed me over the edge. Just bought one!
Nice one! 😁👍👍
Love everything about this " drab" guitar......enjoyed the tasty tune at the end......nice style
Cheers man thanks for supporting! 😎👍
Honestly, my Sunday morning and one of these videos is just the thing for me 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks that’s appreciated! Have a great day 😎👍
Just got mine (in black). What a guitar it is for the money too. Great review. Subscribed off the back of this vid. 👍🏼
Hey Roberto!, I don't know... to me it looks like it hasn't been clear coated over the paint at all, what do you think??
I have 5...
1999 Peerless MiK sunburst w Alnico V P90s
2009 Inspired By JL Revolution w Gibson USA P90s
2007 Elite Sunburst (terada japan) w gibson USA p90s
2015 Inspired by JL 1965 w gibson USA P90s
2019 standard Qingdao made w P90 pro
The 2 IbJL and Elite are used professionally.
Casinos are amazing. They only get better with age. Jazz, blues, rock, grunge... they are killer. Lots of guitar for the price.
I had an olive drab on order for 7 months... gave up and got a Guild Starfire I SC instead. Also a cool guitar btw.
Good video!
Cheers from the US.
Nice collection, cheers Michael for the comment and support! 😎🎸👍
Cheers... was it 64? Thanks for the kind words and support! 😎🎸👍
Subscribed!
Thanks that’s really appreciated! Great song eh?... very inspiring 😎👍
Love your vids. Super tasteful playing, beautifully lit and edited. Thank you.
Ah thanks Martin, that's really massively appreciated! :)
Cheers John, great guitars these! 🙌
