  • Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
Today we are visiting a UNESCO World Heritage Site - one of only six in Scotland. Other examples worldwide are the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China.
After discovering the industrial past of this coastal village, we walk through a local nature reserve to find one of Jack's favourite things - the beach! Here I finds some beautiful and fragile tiny scallop shells to photograph & paint.
I've never painted seashells before, so I was little nervous about trying this. Watch to the end to see how they turned out!
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Hi, interesting history of the river crossings, it was possible to see the incredible scale of the engineering from when you were underneath. Hats off to the men who worked on the bridge and to those who lost their lives during the construction. Good to see all the flora growing in the nature reserve, lots for you to choose from, and the shells are exquisite, thanks for the journey today, have a good week. xx

Your painting looks very much like real seashells. It is wonderful how you got the colors and look of texture so perfect. Jack had a very happy and beautiful walk with both of you.
I have a very large seashell collection. However, I did not take them from nature myself. I bought them one at a time from second hand stores, Flea Markets, and Rummage sales. I think it is time for me to let go of this collection; because, they have been stored out in the storage building for over twelve years. Other people would enjoy looking at those seashells. It is selfish of me to keep them to myself.
I may keep the two Sailor's knuckles (because of the story my father told me). I almost did not buy those two seashells (because they were damaged). However, when Daddy told me what they may have been used for by Sailors (that is a little part of History I need to share with others). I may let them try the shells on (but, they must not hit anyone or anything with them)..

I loved all the wee wild flowers you showed, I love seeing a mix of all the different colours and flowers in beautiful patches like that.
I agree with you about buddlea, there are a lot of them where I stay in overgrown areas, they seem to be taking over, and they smell absolutely amazing, those and hyacinths are my favourite flower scents.
Your shells turned out beautifully, I always think when you add shading it adds an extra wee dimension, like it really is sitting on the paper.
Just like the bloopers add another dimension to you and Willie's videos, Jack really made me laugh with that big stick, he was all proud of himself showing you it 😂
Thank you for another beautiful video. 🤗

Sara, we have scallops here as well. We have "Rough" and "Bay" types. The rough type have ridges on the tops of the ridges, and wings. So they are rough. And the Bay don't have wings at the base. Those are truly beautiful. Great painting as always. I've seen the 4trh of Firth bridge in other videos and didn't understand why so treasured. Several mudlarks show themselves under it on the beach. Now I understand. Thank you.

Loved the bit of history and the beautiful seashore. Watching Jack is always fun and this time was no different. I loved his belly flop (thanks for the slo-mo) and him carrying around that humongous stick. 😆 Your painting is fantastic yet again. I'm always amazed at how well you match the colors to the original. The shells were such unusual colors, I was shocked that you got it so spot on. It was really fun when you added the dark shading, as I could almost see it start to lift off the page. It went from flat to rounded right in front of my eyes. Since the filming was sped up it looked as though someone was pumping it up with air under the page. It was so fun watching that happen. I don't remember any of your other paintings happening so dramatically that way. Maybe I was just more attuned to it today. Anyway, I loved it all. Thanks again! 😊
