Ha! An elusive leg! We find heads and arms but sadly never any legs! I want to make a monstrous doll! So many beads, I absolutely love beads, like you I want to string them together to make something but I am far from necklace length... more like a very very small dolls bracelet haha. You're always so lucky with heads! We never find whole dolls heads! Mum got me a random collection of dolls legs for christmass haha, so this one will go with them very nicley. And a hiddious mismached doll would be so cool! I didn't realize how exited I got over those beads at the time; I don't know what it is, I just love finding them! 😊 Gail & Alex xx

You two have rapidly become one of my favorite channels to watch. My youngest and I have come to think of mudlarking as a perfect mixing of dumpster diving and antique shopping.
Sadly, the US Pacific Northwest has nothing similar to offer in adventure.

The necklace made from the clay pipe stem is wonderful...it is amazing to see something that had been discarded perhaps a century ago...be turned into a object of beauty..Gail & Alex create alchemy..lol.. C
I love Gail's hat and boots as well as her talent. She has great insight for re-purposing objects and a steady hand for the task, I love the pieces she makes. Alex (I think is your name), I absolutely love your filming technique. Alex’s excitement and pleasure in finding a broken piece of junk is so refreshing. It always puts smile in my face . I never found such happiness in someone after finding a broken piece of bottle or a torn shoe etc. For her sake I keep on praying let her get a whole bottle, an unbroken clay pipe etc .

The round brass piece looks like it could be what was used for sprinkling a table cloth or othe piece of linen while ironing the wrinkles out.

how would it be used? To what was it connected, etc.?
Susan Bdusan it would have been attached to a bottle filled with water. If you google “ironing sprinkler bottle” you can see some examples. I haven’t seen any exactly the same, but the theory is sound.
I thought it was used to make tea
I thought it might be for watering seedlings, I've seen pottery versions. You immerse in in water, put your finger on the hole on top and lift it out and release over your seed tray. Not at all sure though.
Lovely video ladies. The information about the bridge builder's pipes was interesting to hear, then the treat at the end watching the pipe fragment being turned into a beautiful piece of jewellery was a joy to watch. Thank you.

@@NorthernMudlarks As an anthropologist, who studies material culture, I really need to see this leg collection. I can only imagine the shoes tend to chip, or the top of the leg. It would be interesting to note the distribution of legs as well. A little silly and a little social sci-ency as well. Can't wait to see more!

I have just watched Si Finds latest video and he was with a visiting Alaskan couple and one of the first items she lived up was a doll's leg just like your find . Unbelievable that two videos after one another you both find the same items ,but very far apart. Thanks for the videos cheers Ty

Love your finds. The best sea glass I've ever found is an entire Pepsi bottle! Beautiful perfect bottle from the beach in North Topsail Beach, North Carolina.
I live in New Bern, North Carolina. My dad got me into hunting for antique bottles in the 70s when I was growing up. I wish my mom could have done something like this mudlarking with me when I was growing up, but sadly she had no interest in it.

I'm a retired environmental geologist living in the U.S. (Utah). I wish we had as much history lurking in our mud as you now have in yours. Maybe ten or twelve more centuries. Great videos. Great finds. Beautiful and creative jewelry.
Gail, you're correct in the identification of the old brake pad. It has the characteristic shape and size, even though the material attached to the metal plate has been highly distorted. Nonetheless, here's the rub: Many, if not most, brake pads of this vintage were impregnated with asbestos. (At least, here in the States that's the case.) Consequently, it may not be a good idea to keep it as a treasure or use it in a project. I certainly wouldn't cut into it or attempt to remove portions of it. Even simply handling it too much is not a good idea. The bottom line is you don't want to create dust or particulates that can become airborne and then be inhaled. If it's currently intact and isn't crumbling apart you shouldn't have to worry. If you haven't already disposed of it, I would suggest placing it in a heavy-duty plastic zip-lock bag, then completely wrap the bag with a strong tape, something like shipping tape or duct tape. A public recycling and/or hazardous waste collection facility is your best bet for disposal, if you have one available.
I know such a thing sounds like a bummer and maybe even a bit of overkill. But just one small asbestos fiber inhaled and caught in the lung can do some pretty nasty stuff down the road. Best to err on the side of caution. I just want my favorite mum and daughter mudlarking team to keep on collecting and creating for many years to come. Happy future hunting!

Plastic versus glass -- you need to do the "tooth tap test". You will definitely be able to tell the difference. Try it at home first -- with clean plastic and glass -- you'll know what I mean when you give it a tap against a tooth, you can feel it.

I love the way you do the intro together; finishing each other's sentences and nodding in agreement from time to time...and of course Alex's beaming face. Don't know why I don't simply watch the same video over & over, but just have to see the same faces on a different day...glad to see Gail was in a smiley mood too. How many legs before Alex's reaction is "uhh, it's another leg"...like what happened to Mr White's clay pipes; but the quote of the day: "How lucky have I been; two beads & a leg". xmas present sharing must be something to behold.

I’m probably wrong, seeing some of these other comments, but my first instinct is that the round brass thing is part of a simple swinging incense burner that are used in Catholic churches.
That's what I thought, an incense burner.
how would you get the incense inside, or light it? and the holes would be on the bottom, sprinkling cinders on the carpet, ....notre dame style! (too soon?)

Or perhaps a float for a WC AKA water closet tank or a door knob, as was suggested.
@@rockreader4298 That was my guess; A float for a water tank above the toilet. They don't make them like that anymore. No incense soot. Too big for a door knob. A keeper for sure. (Love the display tray).

Is it possible to go to old city records to find out where dumping used to occur? Might help you target your mud larking. Some great finds today!
Great idea, I have done that, and have found amazing bottles..etc.
The older dumping was usually done not far from the town center. These dumps contain mainly coal ash, so finding ash in the ground is a key sign
I always keep an eye out for areas with nettles, elderberries, which thrive in ash-filled soil.
