You must do the same vibration study technique on the saxophone, because the saxophone is even more difficult to excite correctly; sax is a conical instrument, it can easily go in the overtone on the same fingering of the base note. So, by breathing in slowly, you create a subtone first (a cushion of slow air that excites only the fundamentals of the note). Creating a lush subtone on a saxophone is an art in itself, and gives an incredible charm to the instrument. In short, if you struggle with exciting the clarinet to the correct note after a pause, find someone's saxophone to practice the same technique. It will help you enormously.
