I have been looking at the Radiant in the tin, but now that I've watched this I'm not sure. The drawings and coloring in the Universal feel more classic, with the rougher textured gradients that look like pencil crayon, while the Radiant with its smoother gradients and more coloring seems a bit like a more modern comic book. I definitely like the faces better in the Universal than the Radiant, and I like the Roman numerals in the Universal rather than the numbers spelled in the Radiant. What I really don't like about the Radiant is that it doesn't have the signature of Pamela Coleman Smith like the Universal does in the bottom right corner. I think it should have her signature. I thought this video was a lot of fun to watch and I slowed it down to half speed so I could look a little longer at the details when comparing... there are a lot of small but significant differences. Thank you!
SO welcome! Thanks for the comment..I agree! I actually bought the universal before the Radiant. It took me awhlile to get the Radiant for exact reasons you said. I appreciate the bright blue skies on Radiant...thats about it. I find the Universal clearer for some reasons and more authentic in a way. I also get very clear readings and the coloring is almost as "radiant" as the radiant! Part of my inspiration to do this comparison was almost to show just how radiant the universal is...lol

Thanks for the video I prefer the Universal because the way colour transition has been implemented it is not difficult to miss out on the important details whereby in Radiant due to the same colour scheme one needs to focus really hard to notice the important details. And the font is huge for me the Universal somewhat tries to keep up with the 80s RWS whereby the font on Radiant makes it not to be taken seriously and seems like a child's playing cards. Though I appreciate the richness of colour in Radiant, Universal still wins as a beginner's friendly deck.

I bought them both. They’re similar but so different at the same time! The Radiant card stock is just slightly thicker.
Radiant seems slightly squeezed horizontally. In the original RWS and Universal Temperance card, the emblem on the angel's chest is an equilateral triangle; in the Radiant, it is isosceles.
Love the richness of the saturation and shading in the Radiant but the faces seem so different and some color choices are less satisfying.

This is the CORRECT WAY of comparison. Closeup is good. And there is a clarity which one is what. I was confused between these two but this video was great help in deciding what I want

Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I was looking for. I like the skin color more on the radiant set. The universal set has pale white skin color. The radiant set has more realistic skin color, more lifelike and interesting. In general I like the radiant set more in nearly every regard. I have only watched the first few cards so far, but I'll get back to it now.

Yep I agree. Was watching Colette Baron Reeds video yesterday doing a tarot reading. Someone asked which deck she was using. I knew I’d seen these cards before and remembered da backing of these. So I saw the cover of radiant ones and looked for backing and said this is the one. Then I came upon Universal one and it looked a little less colorful. I thought the backs were exactly the same, so was puzzled when reading comments that two different authors. Today someone commented on CBR video that she was using universal. So I went and looked again at these two decks and realized da backs were different , just looked similar. I thought the radiant also had stars on it. Because there wasn’t a close up on Colettes video of the back easy to think the Universal back was the same.. Even though the printing on bottom of Universal would be easier to see, I prefer the printing on Radiant. Like you said there are times when Universals card is richer then radiant. I love bright colors. What I like is whenever you mentioned Radiant had more purple ( my favorite color) in background. I have a solution ( as long as you’re rich 😂). Buy both decks and just pick your favorite one for each ( sorry how do you call it) like for moon card for example pick which one you like da best. Shoots I can’t justify buying both decks. I have WOTO by Colette, she has an updated, revised new deck which I like better but how can I justify buying the newer one.
Have an idea. So one make a new deck and let us pick which card is best on each ( again what do you call it) but pick printing from Radiant. Or another way to print . Just don’t do the print style of Universal.

Ive been using the same Universal Waite since the mid 1990s. If I was on a desert island and could only have one deck this would be the one. The Radiant is beautiful too, but the Universal seems more "classic" , while the Radiant is more cartoony, like "Saturday morning" cartoons. Not that this is a bad thing either. Ive learned tarot is personal, and while it may not be my cup of tea for readings, others may love it. Thanks for this comparison. Theyre always fun : )

A while back, I bought the Radiant Rider Waite Tarot Deck thinking I was going to really like it. Then for some inexplicable reason, I grew to dislike it. Now because of this video, I see why. The pictures have a sunburned, slightly artificial quality to them, and the matte finish doesn't do them any favors. The Sun looks like it's going to scorch you, and the colors are heavy-handed in places. The Universal Waite Deck is vastly superior both in line work and coloring. In fact, because of this video, I've decided on the Universal Waite Deck over the Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot. I've heard people say the Universal is the best RWS out there. I used to be skeptical. Now I think they're right. Thank you for your enlightening comparison! ✨🕊️

I really liked the comparison. The Universal Waite is my pick. To me the art is clearer to see. The details of the art and the coloring the font is more appealing to me. I will buy this one first. I think the Radiant is nice as well and was considering it in the kit.

Thank you for this very good presentation of both decks. I’ve been wanting a more traditional deck and it’s very hard to decided! Just when I think, oh the Universal has more detail, the next card in the Radiant has more detail, it’s like neither could make up their mind when to be soft and when to be detailed 😂 I do admit I like the faces better in the Universal though.

I saw a reading with the radiant and the colors were gorgeous, they look not as lit here due to lighting, but in person, th cards are beautiful and I got the tin ones so they are perfect for me

A gorgeous, fun deck that has been my gateway in to tarot, but I've realised that it's not great for learning the depth of the meaning of the tarot. So with that in mind, I'm going to go for the original.

I agree that some cards look nicer in the Universal deck and some look better in the radiant deck. However I think I would choose the Universal deck because the faces look a lot nicer in my opinion, and I don't like that the cards in the Radiant deck are missing the artist's signature.
Those were actually the same exact reasons why I chose universal first. Later I bought radiant just for the blue skies....

So welcome! Yes that’s it exactly...I appreciate the clarity on universal but the blue skies on radiant pull me in....they are both colorful in their own ways but quite different.
Thank you for this I was looking for a learning deck, not too expensive, that I could print on the edges while I am studying. I have the Radient deck in a little tin, pretty, but...my gut kept telling me not to use that one for learning. Now that I the difference, side by side, I can see that I do want the Universal deck for this purpose. I now feel at peace with my decision. Liked and Subscribed, Raven : )

Thanks for the comparison of the Universal and Radiant Rider Waite decks. I have some tarot decks but haven't bought the Rider Waite yet. I wanted to get one and couldn't decide on which one to get. I think I like the Universal a bit better as the faces on the people appeal to me more. Thanks for the look at both decks.
I have both and tbh I always thought the Radiant would be my top choice but in person it isn't. For me, although the love the colors I prefer PCS handwriting and signature on the cards, also there is some thing strange to me about the faces on the Radiant cards - I can't put my finger on what it is, I just know that I prefer the Universal. The other really important thing for me is the feels the Universal have me when I first opened my deck. It was an experience like no other and just felt right. Somehow I also prefer the card stock on the Universal, its softer to me. That said, no regrets about purchasing the Radiant set as the guide book is friggin amazing. Full colour, glossy with 2-pages per card. I love it. Not sure if I'll move the deck along from my collection but for now it's the Universal I'll continue to reach for. The Universal seems a bit more detailed in all the objects, except for the faces where the Radiant seems to have more shading to give the faces dimension.
Thank you for this video is awesome. I personally prefer the radiant although there are some cards in the universal that I like a lot. I am not very fan of the handwritten letters and numbers, is like the original but I prefer the more stylish ones from the radiant. I prefer the numbers outside the drawings too.They should make a mini radiant and a giant radiant :)
Lol I agree I like all sizes ...I would love all tarot cards to offer all sizes..they would also make so much money! Then we really wouldn’t be able to decide and buy big size for home..small size to carry etc maybe it’s better they don’t lol for me I tend to like universal but then really love the blue skies on the radiant cards so I go back to them too..I hear you on the font differences too..I always thought the periods after the word was strange too!
Well I have good news for you and bad news for your pocket then LOL I discovered that the Radiant that comes in a Metal case, Tin case, is quite smaller than the normal Radiant. BUT I didn't like that in that smaller ones the white borders are quite big for my taste. They kept exactly the same border size as the bigger ones in a much smaller card :( I don't know why they did that. There are some reviews on youtube of that one ua-cam.com/video/6iGLukwIF5k/v-deo.html What do you think? I actually lost my Radiant I can not find it anywhere that is why I was researching again about tarot decks :( The radiant is definitely my favorite so I may end up buying it again. I would have loved to buy the tin can one, for the case and the size but those white borders kind of killed it for me.
Well I don't know I just saw that tin radiant version video again, maybe is growing on me, love the box and the cute size. :/ I am undecided.
Oh and I discovered a Radiant made in China on ebay. quite cheap of course, but the interesting thing is the desing on the back. look for it.
I completely understand..I’m like that with universal tarot and got in several sizes...if you can find deals get your radiant in tin and large! For me if you absolutely love a deck and really can’t decide Size I get both cause I will use both ...but if I can only get one I get larger one. Only because I personally like larger cards...it is so personal though. Good luck choosing! Let me know what you finally get!

So welcome! I love universal Waite too...I actually don’t have the radiant wise spirit deck yet. I had to preorder it and it hasn’t come yet. I will post video as soon as I get it though!
I bought the Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot and have been very disappointed with it. I don’t know if my print edition is different to others, but I find it very dark and the lines are blurry and thick. It is very hard to see some details. I couldn’t see the man lying under the horse on the Death card at all. I am going to order the Universal Waite now that I’ve rewatched this flip-through as I like the softness of the faces and prefer the lighter backgrounds. I think the blue backgrounds of the Radiant RW Tarot would eventually annoy me. This will be my second RW deck. 😊
Janet Danes so interesting you said that as I felt the same! Received Radiant Wise Spirit and such heavy saturation of colors and very mustardy ..definitely not using as much as my other decks! And this was after being so excited and even preordering it which I have never done before. For some reason I prefer other clearer decks too even if less color..just a little too dark and not as clear to me too. Initially thought it was cool but not using as much as other decks..I thought I was going to absolutely love it...
Hi Caroline, it’s interesting to hear you feel the same. I also thought that I’d love it, so pre-ordered the deck. Do you have the Radiant RW and/or the Universal Waite? If so, do you have a preference? I’m going to look at the Universal Tarot as well. The colouring is quite calm in comparison with both these decks and some images I’ve seen look three-dimensional. There are shadows cast on the ground and extra details added to the background which look good.
I feel the same too! I preordered and was very excited at first! To me very saturated and mustardy and after all my expectations I don’t use the deck over my other ones! A little too dark and not as clear to me as other decks! I will be doing compare Review this week like you suggested now that I finally have the deck to do it! Then people can really see difference before buying it! It’s interesting how some people absolutely love it and some really don’t...I fall in the latter too..I much prefer other decks over radiant spirit..though I like the name lol

I got the Radiant version as my first tarot deck when I was trying to learn more about tarot and it has been very patient with me 😂 I might consider getting the Universal deck in future, there are some interesting details going on there!
Late to the party here! But looking for a more colourful edition on those days when you just want more colour! 😂…I think the universal pips it for me, as an artist myself I find the expressions on the faces more meaningful and subtle than the radiant. There are definitely a few cards I prefer in the radiant, I think especially the aces of the suits. But overall I felt the eye was drawn to the most important aspects of the card better in the universal. Plus I love the writing of PCS on the bottom and a lot of the cards have her lovely signature emblem. So thank you for taking the time to do this comparison.

Sister, I was just looking at symbols on my Universal deck this morning.
I'm really getting into symbology and I note there is a period after each title on the trumps, aces, and court cards. I also note that it is not consistent but only for the reprinting of the card; some of the periods are cut off because of/or didn't fit in because of the white border. In another vid I see you have some of these original decks before the destruction in London?
I'm curious on your fascinating deep study of the intricacies of each deck if you've ever seen one where the colors go all the way to the edge (no white border) which would include the periods of all those I mention .

Yes I’ve noticed that too across decks, difference with periods, and font changes and also the lines and even faces different across some decks
These were the 2 decks with the most color in my opinion. My fav to use personally of all the “original” versions by trial and error became the Tarot of AE Waite. I believe was the one printed with pebble back and what they actually released. I felt better energy with it too. I definitely preferred over the original version and others. It’s interesting because everyone has different preferences when it comes to decks. I definitely like clarity and some lines on the decks are really not great to me and throw me off
For better facial features, which is of paramount importance to me , will choose the universal deck. The only weakness in the universal deck to me is colour of the trees in the universal deck is the black green tree, is weird and ugly. Haha.. btw i really love the design on the back of the universal deck.. thank you so much for this clear fantastic comparison . Hugs!

Beautiful, thank you! I like the Universal, but the only thing that would have me pick the Radiant are the white skies in the Universal, I prefer the contrast created by the bluer ones in the Radiant.

OMG! I was having problems choosing one of these. I already have the original RWS, wanted one with vibrant colours.. the problem is.. after seeing the video, I want BOTH decks.. the universal is the same original drawings, but repainted.. and the radiant got rid of the delineated lines of the original drawings and gave the images more of painting feel and facial expressions.. love BOTH!

I use the Radiant Rider-Waite. Had the Lo Scarabeo RWS deck existed when I started, that would possibly be the one I would have started with. However, the Radiant Rider-Waite works well for me, and when I do readings, I never think "I should be using a different deck."

@@FreeSpiritChannel The first review I saw of Radiant Rider-Waite was sort of like that. That person had been using Morgan-Greer instead because they couldn't relate to Rider-Waite as it was. I think a Waite-Smith is the ideal to start with, so I like that there are becoming more recolorings and redrawings of it, so that more people might possibly find one that they can easily relate to.
I think you’re right..rider Waite is def easiest to learn from..it easily speaks...also agree with so many new variations there is so much more of a choice to pick ..such great decks of colors and choices of styles to pick a deck that truly speaks to you..wish there was more of a choice many years ago when I started..it def makes it more fun!

I like the universal better
this was very helpful. i was on amazon today looking for decks and comparing the two. i think i prefer the universal because of the smaller border and the bigger type. the coloring is similar between the two although i prefer the radiant aces better and some of the numbered cards better. the court cards are pretty close between both decks i think. thank you for your review.

I choose Universal Waite Tarot Deck.
I did too! Got universal first! Love the clarity! Then later got radiant for the blue skies!

I know I'm coming late, but, anyone knows why the strength and the justice are switched in this tarot version? All the cards are exactly the same as the Marseille tarot except for these two cards
I’m not sure why but noticed some decks switch them. Hopefully someone else will come along who may be able to share why they do.
Actually I just found something online explaining they were switched to go better with order of astrological signs…

Thank you for making this video. I ordered the Universal Waite from Booktopia today. Looking at your comparison has made me feel very good about my choice. While the Radiant deck is nice, I feel that the Universal is more close to natural, if that makes any sense. To me, the colouring on the Radiant deck seems a little bit over the top in some parts. The problem with the radiant is the faces... they are awful, but the soft paint is better, because color on universal looks like childlike pencil ....
Yes the part that draws me to radiant is the blue skies...
I have the radiant deck. And almost month and months of use they kind of stick together. Is there a RW deck thats extra slippery? 😂 I hate not being able to fan them out

Not at all! I have tons of different tarot decks & oracle decks. I use different ones depending on my mood or which one appeals etc. You can have and use as many as you want! Thats also why you see people with so many. Once you start you start liking other decks as they have different artwork and images. Enjoy finding decks to use and love! :)

Hello from Canada : ) There is nothing wrong with having more than one deck. I have 6 versions of the Rider deck, using the Universal Waite as my "good" one(used for readings) and the others are used for comparison and study. I find this can help us discover the symbolism and coloring easier and faster when we have other versions. Hope this helps.Good luck : )
