Thanks for the ride. Fort Rock in southern Oregon had the same origins. Looks like Soda Lake would be good for summer swimming & a nice spot for a rare Nevada waterfront house.
Found your videos and love them. Hope you continue with more. I am a retired helicopter pilot living in Reno and over 30 years flown over all this land you know so well. I have friends that for years have laughed at me and my interest in this geology. They think only Lake Tahoe is worth admiring. And if they ever had to travel east through Nevada would say it's hell on earth. I'd just laugh. I always thought it was as interesting if not more then their beloved LT. I flew many geologist and did survey work for the railroad, the gold mines, flown all over the Rubies, fire fighting and most all the rest of the state.I'm a old Army Vietnam helicopter pilot with lots of fixed wing hours too. Again I thank you for the videos and commentary. Extremely informative.
I envy you. Yes, that kind of low-level flying had to engender an interest in a world that few see. Being a Vietnam combat veteran, helicopters are burned into my memory. My river boat had a helo pad mounted on a WWII LCM landing craft. It was used for medivac in the Mekong Delta, a place with few places to land. Witnessing a couple of fatal accidents with Hueys in this type of operation kind of prejudiced me against helicopters. To this day at an airport I get behind something when a helicopter is landing. Memories of seeing pieces flying all over the place when something goes wrong. Like the saying goes, I left Vietnam but Vietnam never left me.
Thanks for your interest in a place where you can find a lot of geology. When I lived back East I couldn't see the geology because there were to many damned trees : - )
Love your videos! History and Geology combined! I live just 20 air miles south of Mount Saint Helens but flying over this area the features of the land are mostly obscured by the forest. One has to cross over to the dry side of the Cascades to see what the land really looks like. Even in the "Blow Down" around the mountain Ma Nature has wasted no time in covering up the devastation with thick coat of vegetation.
Thank you. Nevada doesn't have the beauty of the Northwest. Historically it has been an area that pioneers wanted to get across as fast as they can. But its mostly treeless land has been called a Disneyland for geologists because they can see a great variety of geologic processes happening for hundreds of miles.
Nevada has its own beauty and I go there occasionally for a change of scenery. There's not much of a horizon here, most of the time you are looking up thru the trees so when I am in the "wastes" of the Silver State the size of the sky is something wonderous. @@malcolmmarzo2461
Really enjoyed this video. Love learning about that part of Nevada. I think people drive interstate 80 not even knowing some of this cool history that surrounds them.
Thanks. The subject matter has a limited audience nowadays. And with the limited resources available these take so long to make (hours per minute of video) I can't get many videos out.
Yes, the flattening of the Earth from the air can make it difficult to locate features. Like the airport you are looking to find. While the fuel gauges are getting lower : -)
@@malcolmmarzo2461 Are you a pilot? Flying a jet plane thousands of miles on a single flight, you have to lower your nose to adjust for Earth curvature said no Airline Pilot ever...
Those were 2 nice landings, right on centerline.

Things I never knew about in my own back yard. Nevada Geology is incredible. Thanks for even more knowledge!
Thanks. One geologist told me that Nevada is like Disneyland for geologists : -)

3:54 Earth looks pretty flat.
