After reading all these positive reviews in the comments, I just had to try making these. Having never eaten a cheese sandwich ever in my life, I gotta say this was the best thing I've ever made by myself perfectly. Thank you!!
Gotta say: i've made more grilled cheese sandwiches in the past two weeks, than in my entire life since this video. Not to mention the first time ever I made the tomato soup and my wife loved it! Thanks Adam! 😍
I made the soup today. Fantastic. One thing I might add next time is a Parmesan rind and then I would increase the simmer time from 30 minutes to a few hours. Would love to hear other peoples suggestions for layering in more flavors.
I like to butter the bread but add a nice thin layer of mayo in with the cheese. It really heightens the flavor and mixes well with the melted cheese giving it a nice creamy consitensy
The best grilled cheese recipe: sourdough bread (buttered on the outside), manchego cheese, quince paste, arugula. Stole it from a grilled cheese bar at a Whole Foods after it closed, it’s still one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!
One time my mom was going through a health craze and bought sour bread so I made a really great grilled cheese with butter, roast beef, block cheese, sour bread, and tomatos. Delicious 😋
What I’ve started doing with my grilled cheese sandwiches when I have them with tomato soup is cutting them into ‘sticks’. Cut in half bilaterally and then cut those halves in half. Perfect width for single bites and maximal surface area dipping. The last bite of the stick goes on the spoon and is submerged and scooped up.
As a kid my mom used to cut waffles that way. (Ego frozen waffles either choc chip or blueberry, butter, peanut butter, & REAL maple syrup) Everyone always judges the peanut butter but its delicious and should be tried atleast once.
@@jasonreed7522 Peanut butter is the real deal. An "unusual" combination is toasted bread (multigrain preferably) smothered with peanut butter, cut into sticks as you mentioned, and hastily dipped in coffee (it works best with a little splash of milk in your coffee and maybe a teaspoon of sugar, depending on the how your day is going). The way the fats of the PB interact with the coffee is creamy goodness that is too good to discover.
Glad to see Lauren getting more comfortable being on camera, I know it can be intimidating especially considering how the internet acts, but she did great and the meal she made looks good. Also, my mom taught me to make grilled cheese the exact same way, wonder if she learned it from the Pennsylvania part of the family. Processed factory made bread and processed cheese were made for this!
I actually use both butter and mayo. I use butter on the outside that will be grilled and a little mayo on the inside with the cheese. I really like it this way!
Hey Adam, I just wanted to say I absolutely never cook, and this came out a treat, me and my family absolutely loved it, only thing I changed was a glug of Tabasco in the soup. Much love from the UK
My wife is Russian and wasn't too much into smooth pureed soups, including tomato soups. I say "wasn't" because I followed your recipe and she LOVED it! (as did I, but that was pretty much a given) We believe the fennel is what really did the trick, bringing some really nice vegetably freshness. We also loved the spicy oil, it brings a nice "oomf". Thanks for your great recipe! (oh and sandwiches were great too!)
When I was little my mom literally would not let me dip my grilled cheese into my tomato soup for some reason unti I was in like 7th grade, I still don't know why
Adam’s version of toasted cheese is very like mine except I add the thinnest possible smear of yellow mustard to the inside side of one slice of bread. Then some cracked pepper. It’s so intense!
When I do grilled cheese I do a mixture of roughly 75-80% butter and 20-25% mayo. Gives it just a hint of a tanginess and helps with crisping a but better.
this looked so good I had to try it asap. Just made it today and it's AMAZING. So tasty. Never thought I'd be able to make good tomato soup that both tastes like the nostalgic stuff from the can but also is better! They ran out of fennel at the supermarket so I did a switch and used celery and fennel seeds. Absolutely lovely. Thank you!
If your grilled cheese has a fishy taste after grilling with mayo on the outside- its probably the oil that was used to make the mayo. Some cookies that used to have every few days started tasting a bit fishy - turns out they'd started using a different type of oil in the recipe - so it's definitely a possibility for why you have that fishy problem.
I thought this was the algorithm getting me again after i talked about mac and cheese bites with tomato soup to a friend last night, but adam is always in my recommended and this is his newest episode so this is heavily appreciated timing
I've been making grilled cheese, especially since my GF got me an immersion blender for christmas which makes an awesome tomato soup. I ran out of butter the other day and decided to use ghee instead. I highly recommend you give it a shot. You're always going to burn your butter when you cook a grilled cheese, and the ghee is great because it doesn't have the milk solids to burn!
I made the tomato soup - didn't use white wine as I didn't have it so I substituted with white wine vinegar and water! So gosh damn good. Seriously, awesome recipe - thank you!
So I just made this. The soup is delicious. Just easy, warm, comfy, delicious. I didn't strain it because frankly I couldn't be bothered. I may have almost burned the grilled cheese, but all in all it was just so good. I look forward to have this in my freezer for a lazy day where I just have to warm it up, whip up a quick grilled cheese and have a meal
it's like he knew ahead of time that here in the US a warm and fuzzy non-controversial comfort food from our collective childhood would be exactly what we needed this week
One of my favorite combos was Swiss cheese and the store bought sourdough that's wide and has a bit more of a tender crumb. That's almost 2 sandwiches as one, and I can cut it into sticks of sorts, kinda like toast soldiers, to dip in my tomato soup. Slightly sour bread and sort of funky cheese, works good for me.
It's tough to beat a proper grilled cheese sandwich, and Adam's is spot on perfect. Notice that he used the Un-Wrapped type of American cheese versus the "singles" type that are individually wrapped -- it is a slightly higher grade of cheese (and what I always use). A slice or two of deli ham in the grilled cheese makes it more of a meal, as does a few pieces of already cooked bacon. On a cold winter day when a grilled cheese sandwich is not quite enough, I like a Grilled Tuna sandwich (without cheese). While I do use mayo to prepare the tuna, I definitely use butter for the grilling side of the bread. A nice hot tuna sandwich goes with most any soup, I like to pair it with chicken rice soup or even ramen noodle soup.
Everytime somebody talks about how great immersion blenders are I get so happy, they're the best and I always have one with me going to friendd or family to cook.
I think the fishy flavor is the oil in the mayo starting to oxidize. Kind of like canola oil (which contains omega 3s) after you’ve used it to deep fry. Canola is common in mayo because it’s very neutral.
@@hs9249 That's a dumb straw man argument. It's like if I saw a flying plane and said "Why building flying? Buildings should fall." Mayo can be used in all sorts of recipes around the world. A good cook plays with their ingredients, not restricting themselves to a single recipe.
To me, this is late autumn food. For one of those days that are just cold and wet, and you stay cold and wet all day at school/work, and get home tired and grumpy. You also have a sniffle and a light headache, since this weather has been going on for a week. My dad would then get home with his backpack filled with damp bread, ham and cheese, and declare grilled cheese and soup for dinner. We kids would be commanded to make a grilled cheese station, whilst he took care of soup. Me being the big sis, would plug in the grilled cheese maker, before slicing bread. My little brother would lay them out and spread on ketchup, then we added on cheese and ham. As soon as the grilled cheese maker was ready, I'd get that one started grilling contiously. In the meantime, older brother had been chased out of his den to make soup. This meant freeze dried veggie soup, since he hated both tomato and fish. He might add in some leftover or frozen veggies to make mum happy. Dad would have dissapeared to get a warm shower and dry socks, least there be complaints of the stench. 20 minutes after dad got home, we would sit down and enjoy our warm, filling meal. Mom would get home as we ate, pleased that a warm meal with decent nutrition was on the table for her. The meal would be mostly enjoyed in silence, only broken by slurping, sniffling and the sound of crunchy grilled cheese.

The best grilled cheese recipe: sourdough bread (buttered on the outside), manchego cheese, quince paste, arugula. Stole it from a grilled cheese bar at a Whole Foods after it closed, it’s still one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!
Oooh yum
One time my mom was going through a health craze and bought sour bread so I made a really great grilled cheese with butter, roast beef, block cheese, sour bread, and tomatos. Delicious 😋
What I’ve started doing with my grilled cheese sandwiches when I have them with tomato soup is cutting them into ‘sticks’. Cut in half bilaterally and then cut those halves in half. Perfect width for single bites and maximal surface area dipping. The last bite of the stick goes on the spoon and is submerged and scooped up.
Genius
As a kid my mom used to cut waffles that way. (Ego frozen waffles either choc chip or blueberry, butter, peanut butter, & REAL maple syrup)
Everyone always judges the peanut butter but its delicious and should be tried atleast once.

When I do grilled cheese I do a mixture of roughly 75-80% butter and 20-25% mayo. Gives it just a hint of a tanginess and helps with crisping a but better.
this looked so good I had to try it asap. Just made it today and it's AMAZING. So tasty. Never thought I'd be able to make good tomato soup that both tastes like the nostalgic stuff from the can but also is better! celery works quite better in terms of soupy tastes, and fennel seeds seem to have more of a smell factor so this could be better

"meanwhile, for garnish, I'm gonna grab a little pot"
eat the pot
@Zuzzie that pic is scary

Extra virgin canola oil may be less fragrant than olive oil, but still way more fragrant than sunflower oil
mayo straight up goes on the inside. idk who ever thought it should be a sub for butter due to the oil content? madness

@@hs9249 That's a dumb straw man argument. It's like if I saw a flying plane and said "Why building flying? Buildings should fall."
Mayo can be used in all sorts of recipes around the world.
