I pruned mine like on the video at end of January, end of March and still no sign of shoots... hope it hasn't died. Breaking news ... shoots starting to appear in April
I just planted one this spring...I am going to wait a couple of years before cutting it all the way down....I love the shrub and will be so disappointed if it dies becasue too uch stress.
Planted mine 3 years ago, first year was slow start second year grew three to four feet, third year it's 9 ft tall haven't prune it yet but I probably will before next spring when i see some buds sprouting on the stems.
How big should the bush be before I start to coppice it? A certain trunk diameter? I cut a really large shrub with two trunks with bark down to 8”. It had no black dots indicating new growth. Now I got a new sapling about /2” diameter. When should I start coppicing?
Her confidence and his cautiousness make for a really reassuring little clip!
This would be more reassuring if I could see what it looked like in summer.
Love this video!
This would be much more helpful if it also included how to prune if you want it to be medium-sized. I want mine to be a tree, but not too tall.
Noted! Will let the editors know : )

What zone location are you in?
We live in Chicago, the Smoke Tree blooms quite late in Spring, I think in April
I enjoy this plant so much more in it's tree form - I grow/prune mine similar to a crape myrtle tree.

Do you have pictures of it growing back? Did you prune yours?
Hi. Can you use the cutting for new plant?
What fraction of a smokebush can you prune ? 1/3? 2/3? to the ground? Does it matter how tall it is when you start to prune it??

I've done to the ground it does grow back I cut early spring
What time of year the featured pruning took place?
I cut mine all the way back last summer. It is now March the following year and the tree is still bald. Not a single new growth. I'm getting worried.
I would like to see the results though.
what time of year?
What time of the year is best to prune? Late fall or early spring?
Chevy Thunder late winter, early spring but no later than end of March.
Why didn’t you go back ?
Aw… should show us same shrub 6 months on…!
Ah! That's a good idea - will try to enact in future.
Can I cut it right down to the ground if it is already 18 feet tall?
Brooke Witham I presume so! Let us know how it turned out!
Yes I have in early spring

This guy's pessimism speaks to me.
