Impulse purchased one of these guys for my garden! Pairing it next to a elderberry and planting old mans whiskers around it, with a couple moonflower vines come next year. i can't wait to see how ethereal all the wispy pinks and whites on dark foliage will be!

Is this plant OK to replace a tree that has developed Crape myrtle bark scale? This Royal Purple Smoke Tree would be planted pretty close to my house near a window. I am not quite sure how do I determine if this area drains well?

Good for privacy screens. And yes I consider them big bushes as well not really trees. Definitely is nice to have some maroon mixed in with all the green during the summer.

I have one that is 4 years old in zone 5 or 6 Ypsilanti, Michigan, that is now cresting over 4ft tall. It grows vigorously in Michigan. Mine has about 5 trunks and spreads about 8ft. It's in full sun here, and it holds it's purple all year. Almost more so than ninebark. I have it with some wine-n-rose weigela, and a ruby falls weeping redbud for some deep n dark colors. I can't rave enough about this plant. I've even gifted a specimen to a friend.

    Two questions:
    1) Can I transplant one in June if watered adequately?
    2) How close can I plant it to a 4 ft. Fence?

I have a Royal Purple Smoke bush near my house, I need to prune it. When is best time to prune it? Or does it matter? Mine has a big ten to twelve inch trunk and at least twenty feet tall.

I planted one of these last year with 4 sunshine ligustrum around it. Looks really nice. I've heard that smoketrees often don't live very long (under 20 years) due to verticillium wilt.

I just got my R.P. SMOKE TREE . THANK YOU ! I'll have to plant it higher .
Any suggestions for a boggy area ( esp. After raining ) I've lost several plants due to " wet feet " . It's a chain link fence dividing our narrow lots . Trying to beautify and provide some privacy . Located on East side . South East area. Would the P.W. lavender Rose of Sharon be able to handle the high moisture area of rich native soil. Zone 5 a . High PH soil .
Mine is in a 1.5 gallon plantar . It's so rich dark purple leaves have changed in just 2 days . It' Mid August .
Thank you for the best. Video !

Great channel Jim - been watching for a few months now. Got one of these in our garden that had been neglected over the years. Hard pruned it right back to the stump late winter and it’s now shooting out lots of new growth. Presume I won’t get any flowers this year - maybe next year.

I have this tree in a single trunk form, it is young and already bloomed and lost all of it so no smokey effect left on a tree. It has like a lollypop form but leaves are only at the end of the brunches and my question is if I trim those would the tree be ok and become fuller and grow more leaves ? I planted last year in October .I am in zone 8 in Dallas Tx.

Just picked one up to replace a weeping beech that is not performing well - dries out, branches brittle and breaking off and did not really grow at all. I am looking forward to slightly larger size (the beech was 6-7 ft tall) and the three seasons of interest. Will have the same purple color leaves but the smoky panicles and fall color should give this added interest.
I have well draining soil (but clay) and the location is west facing and gets a lot of afternoon and evening sun. We are in Maryland - zone 6-7 hot summers, cold winters and lots of humidity. Protected to the North by a neighbors house and mine to the south. Huge Arbivitae to the East. I have a bald cypress close to the location that gets the same exposure and is doing great (ironically that was a free 'native' tree give-a-way - I also got a eastern redbud, disease resistant elm, and sycamore from them).

How late does it leaf out ----- with clethra? I think it is a great choice particularly for warmer climes, given its strong summer color. But it just leafs out too late here in New England... In our case, we chose a contorted filbert relying on other plants for purple color in the late summer and fall.

I have one I planted in 2019 and love it, but I would like it to grow more like the one in your neighbor's yard. Currently, there aren't many center branches and everything is instead growing out from the center. How do I prune it so it looks more tree-like with less foliage near the ground? I want that air and space beneath the plant. I'm having a hard time finding info on this type of pruning and due to the current shape of the branches, am wondering if it is even possible...

This is a late response as I am just watching the video now, but yes, you can do that! I have a “golden spirit” smoke tree / bush and I have done that, works well, looks great. Also with shoal creek vitex. You just need to re - trim off any tiny shoots from the bottom every once and a while, not a hassle.

Jim, our Royal Purple Smoke Bush, purchased in spring 2017, begins to leaf out with purple leaves (with some streaks of green) in spring, but then turns completely green by June of each year. It is planted in full sun. Any recommendations or comments on why this is happening? I checked with the renowned garden center where we purchased the plant; the person I spoke with says this is normal. But so many references online, including your video, indicate a beautiful tree that is purple-leaved throughout the season.

P.S. We are located in the Kansas City area, zone 6. The tree is planted on a slight slope in amended soil. We have a lot of limestone in our soil, and there are many surrounding this tree as landscape accents.

Wanted one for many years. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any anywhere for sale either. Only seen a couple growing and was in North Alabama then. Here in southeast Alabama I have never seen any around here. I tried planting a similar look in a Forest Pansey Redbud tree 6-8 ft and it lasted only 2-3 years and passed away. :(
