Everyone puts too much flour into their dough when they're starting out. You mix the egg and the milk with the salt and the yeast, then mix in 1/2 to 2/3 of the flour. At that point add the butter, it can be melted but I prefer soft butter that I just let sit on the table from the morning I bake - you can use the softened butter in the filling too. Once the butter is kneaded in, add the remaining flour until the dough comes off the walls of the bowl. Once it comes off the walls, it's ready, no need to add anymore flour even if the recipe says so. It doesn't matter even if the dough is a bit sticky, as before using the dough you will put some flour on the table so it doesn't stick to it. Drop the dough on the table and flip it and now it's covered in the flour both sides and doesn't stick to anything anymore. I make killer cinnamon rolls and I'm a male too, you got this!😁

Thanks so much for this tip! My daughter likes to make them so often when she comes to visit and while they are nice, they are still not how I remember my mother’s were. The dough never rises to the rim of the bowl like my mother’s did. I assume it’s because my mother always used fresh yeast, that is so hard to come by these days. I will definitely stop adding flour at the point you suggest.

Baking is chemistry. Measurements are very important. At least you tried and learned from it. 😅

Next step would have been taking the rolls and making some pullavanukas! :D Traditional dessert for making use of dried up leftover pulla.

Haha! I smiled when your father (I think it was his voice) said “maybe we should call this another type of bread with cinnamon flavour”. 😀 At least you now know where you went wrong and can look forward to making it again. We always add much more cinnamon (with the sugar) over the layer of softened butter spread over the dough.

Every Chef has his/her own tricks, but if you push the tip of the A down, the bun gets more ear... And I have never used buter-cinnnamon mix in there.. just cinnamon powder and sugar powder in there before rolling... And pure butter on the top before owen makes it crisp...

Hey, good first try. As someone who makes Finnish cinnamon rolls almost everyday, I do of course recommend using a bit less flour next time lol but also use room temperatured butter on dough that I spread with my hands, just to make easier to add sugar and cinnamon on it without it being too runny. Also, pearl sugar is hard to come by outside of Europe or it can be quite expensive but you can make an substitute just by crushing sugar cubes to smaller pieces.
Looking forward to "redemption" video on Finnish cinnamon rolls in the future!

Hi! I enjoyed watching this video, it was fun and delivered the cozy and warm atmosphere of baking :) I also liked the good vibe regarding that even if everything would not go as planned it can still be fun and exciting to try, discover, learn and try again :D I am a food enthusiast from Finland and have baked Korvapuusti/Cinnamon rolls so so many times. I have planned on making a video of it to my channel at some point, but the dough is the same that I use in Shrove Buns also so if you are trying again soon as mentioned in the video feel free to check the video if interested. In the video I explain and show the whole process detailed but thought of recommending some points here also: 1. The amount of flour is indeed an important factor and I try to keep that in mind when making the dough with at as little flour as possible while still getting the structure to be able to work with the dough on the counter top. 2. Some think that eggs make the dough harder, I think both ways have it's sides and work while still preferring the dough with the eggs. 3. as someone mentioned in the comments already usually when cutting the cinnamon rolls to the A-shape the narrower side goes to the top so when one presses in the middle the layers of the bun are beautifully shown. 4. Lol I am starting to fear this becomes an essay so trying to restrict from writing too long, (almost heh) lastly I think that one really important factor that is maybe more rarely mentioned is the baking temperature. In the bun recipes the suggested temperatures for baking are often quite high for my taste, and I like to bake the buns more gently. Of course there is a lot of variation in what is concerned the best way and the best buns. For example some like gently baked some more, some crispier some softer, some chewier some less, some sweeter or spicier and some less and so on. It is a thing I love about cooking and baking (or one of the many), it can be an adventure with exciting discoveries and in addition oneself and loved ones can get to eat some delicious creations :D
I hope your second baking will be as merry as the first one and perhaps with some softer Korvapuusti also! :)
    With merry regards,
    Strawmerries :)

That's some Pasta-grade Korvapuusti right there!
The big positive is that you got it almost right; the shape and amount they swelled in the oven look good!
I admit that I was a bit afraid you'd end up with (quite literal) cinnamon-bread bricks.. :P
