You should keep the legs completely connected. If the legs are separate they can move unevenly while you're sliding them down for the combination and cause the pegs to shear off. That is what is causing the tabs to break.
Mine arrived yesterday and it's pretty schmick, IMHO. It's a really nice piece, and it feels great in-hand. It's fun to manipulate and pose, and transformation is well thought out. It's not a nightmare of hair-raising joints and tolerances, low clearances and paint scratching. I had already read about some of the issues, so I've been able to avoid any dramas or breakages. I also don't mind the faux chest in this case, because the original toy had it, and of course the masterpiece is respecting that. And yes, the cab is under-scale, but the combined mode is around the height of Ultra Magnus, so it works well. Interestingly, Magnus technically alludes to the same gimmick as Super Ginrai. But I think it only works at that scale because it fakes it. If MP 60 was to be the same scale as MP 10 and Magnus's white fold up cab, the Super Ginrai body would have had to drastically change, either to be broader and thicker, like the Fans Hobby or taller and blockier like the KFC. But despite all this, I really love the MPG. It's a lovely piece that compacts a lot of very nice materials and engineering into a smallish package. And in combined mode, he looks fantastic on the shelf. One big issue I think is that it looks so much better in-person than it does in-video. There's a flattening effect on video, which is an issue with a lot of "toon" aesthetic bots. I hope people give it a chance and don't get swept away in the hyper negativity towards this toy. I just don't think that's warranted. So many people are condemning the toy and Takara! It's ok to not like or want the toy, but the Takara hate is really unreasonable. And some 3P fans (I have many 3Ps, btw) need a bit of a reality check. MGP-09 a beautiful piece in person and fun to handle. It feels premium when you're face to face with it and it's in your hand. And once more: it's intuitive and fun. I'm very happy to have it.
It does feel and look premium, but it doesn't feel or look like an MP, but then again neither does Raiden. Takara is now putting out redecos of MP in MPG, but I think that's incidental. This looks and feels more like a Haslab than an MP. Which is fine, but I think not what people expected.
Great review! I actually was hoping this would scale better with my other Hasbro Haslab Transformers, but this guy is actually too big for my Haslab Star Saber. It scales better with MP-24 Star Saber which actually makes sense. Just glad I was able to track down a MP 24 Star Saber at a good price. I will definitely be displaying my MPG-09 Super Ginrai with my MP-24 Star Saber. Thanks again for the review.
that arm sticking out so high up is such an eyesore...it's not even toon accurate!! thumbs up if anyone secretly wish he broke those smokestacks tabs..lol
What would save MP is Hard Redecos of Arcee for Elita-1 and the rest of the women of Cybertron... Seriously, they all shown up before Arcee... and Her figure could use a backpack update to atleast be removable or have something to solidify a good shaped backpack in a clever way to allow more flat surfaces. (helps Dusting) Great review! I was half decided on this figure so thank you for the videos you do, I like this Ginrai but it'll be one more copy for fans as I do have a limit to my own masterpiece collection. (Grand Scale of robots... I need more space because I have an entire cast displayed, together as One!) But Thank you for the video, really is a treat exploring these figures throughout the years with such a great host. :)
I’m actually kinda happy I didn’t go in on this I like my original powermaster prime this however doesn’t look like a masterpiece it’s more like a missing link version of the original I think I prefer the titans return version. Especially seeing as not paying that masterpiece pricing
30:48 there should not be a tiny lip of the top sticking out, the top of the cab should be flush with the shoulders. wotafa's video (Japanese) goes into detail. Still, that doesn't solve the issue of the neck plate popping up (at least for him), so it's a minor nitpick.
I could not get it perfectly flush even with added pressure, I think suggesting that to people in my review would likely result in breakage of the tab on the smokestack, that's why I recommended not pushing it any further
Great review. Before sliding the cab into super mode, I flex the sides of the chassis like I'm opening up a coat or a sneaker before popping your foot in and that helps the cab slide in easier. Just a little bit, nothing crazy, there's plenty of give to the plastic.
2:11 The diecast truck cab front is accurate to Takara's G1 toy; Hasbro's PMOP was entirely plastic with stickers for the windows. 9:47 ...ehhh, his scale in particular got flushed down the toilet before he was even thought of: unless MP24 Starsaber is too small, the fully combined God Ginrai is gonna be WAY OFF once MPG14 Godbomber comes out. How so? Well...the Takara Transformers Legends LG35 Super Ginrai+LG42 Godbomber (or LGEX God Ginrai) combined into God Ginrai *is the same size as Starsaber*, which is accurate since they were the same size in Victory. MPG God Ginrai is undoubtedly gonna be bigger than Starsaber. (It's odd, though, I've heard Ginrai's supposed to be smaller than Convoy/Optimus. Ehhh. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️) 26:41 ...to be fair, who really used the base mode of the G1 toy?? 🤣 36:24 That's Takara G1 toy accurate, since it had retractable blue hands instead of the fixed red hands of Hasbro's G1 toy. The regular Super Mode blue-eyes head is the stock anime head, BUT, Takara did do a reissue of the G1 God Ginrai set back in the day where they gave both regular and super heads blue eyes, so you could say it's a toy head. The "more anime looking" head is your typical angry face. Question: what would be the best implementation possible for a thigh swivel? Looking at the figures I have, there's either blatant thigh cuts (Blackarachnia, MPM Bumblebee, MP36, etc.) that work great, but they CAN look absolutely trashy (MP36 is just fugly...MPG9's got nothing on THAT, Blackarachnia & Movie Bee are fine if you don't focus on the leg detail too much)...or the swivel is wrapped around the hip (Starsaber, MP44, MP52, Soundwave, Fans Hobby Athena, etc.), which looks much cleaner but can potentially block some articulation depending on the cut.
This isn’t a small figure or a different scale. Ginrai is smaller than Optimus and is just a bit taller than a car-bot. The trauma of the Trainbots has everyone paranoid.
I'm guessing they're trying to reconnect with the market that got into MP with the Hasui era, which seems fair imo. As much as I love the Hyper toon stuff, it's quite obvious that it's not the cup of tea for a ton of collectors, son going back to basics and making sure they're making great quality Toys instead of only aspiring to be perfect portraits is quite a smart choice. Now, the conflicting part is definitely the scale, in one hand, yeah it's a massive shame that it seems (but whe don't really know yet) that they're killing the MP scale officially, but knowing how much of that earlier MP market turned to CHUG collecting I can see how it makes sense. If I had to guess, after the news of MPG Rattrap, I think the train bots and Ginrai are more like a transition point, and going forward they're gonna keep using the regular MP scale, especially because I think it's highly unlikely that MPG jazz would be deluxe sized since a PR of 86 Jazz is coming later this year.
At that price, it's pretty much a given that I'm going to (have to) stick with Power Baser. At least I have the reissue with added diecast and moveable panel for the super mode.
Unpopular opinion, because I never knew toys/characters like this existed, I have no connection to them and save so much money. I also just don't care for the blocky aesthetics but I'm glad there are a lot of people who are excited for it.
So whats up with ginrai’s crotch part. There’s a tab there you can push in wich actuates two tabs. But i find it unclear what it is actually for.. also the power master pushes a tab. But that also does not seem to do anything? Besides that i think it’s a great update to the g1 version. A ‘modern g1’ as you will.. it’s dwarfed by skyfire but hey.. here we are :p
The MP-60 Ginrai's pretty cool-looking but I'm neither a fan of the Powermaster Prime character or the direction Takara's taking away from Masterpiece towards MPG. Oh well, there's still always third-party if you want your G1 fix.
You always knock it out of the park with your reviews, and no different here: everything is covered in detail with excellent feedback throughout; just fantastic. You should have more followers - truly underrated. And as others stated, have no connection to the lore/cartoon. So yeah, too steep $$$ for my liking given the size (the main cab/figure) just too small. As you said, see what they’re trying to do with scale, but F that: I’m spending ~$300 I want the main figure to be bigger, and that’s it. But to each their own.
Ginrai doesn’t look good to me and the trailer looks weird with those arms sticking out. Super Ginrai looks good. But it’s a pass for me. EDIT: I’m OK with the scale but since this line has gone for toon accuracy, I think that it’s a fail, especially for the price.
yeah i am glad i didnt go in on this. honestly doesnt look that screen accurate esp in truck mode. cab sits too far back and they could have done something with those supermode arms to make them shorter. also the plastic sounds a little cheap like it was made back in the 2000s. price point is too high for what it is. Great video though =)
Ginrai alone was 10 meters tall in Masterforce so about 15¾" is how tall it should be. So much larger than MP-44..but here we have a downsized over priced figure. Such a let down..but I'm never buying another TakakaTony turd in MPG scale. Those trainbots were bad enough as it is. Keith's Fantasy Club is better than this. Glad I didn't buy this thing.
If Hasbro brought this into the Generations line in a couple years and sold it as a titan as PowerMaster Optimus Prime with some compromises (silver plastic instead of paint for the thighs and smoke stacks, etc) I don't think anyone would mind.
I think there will be 3rd party OS KO's of this that makes it true MP size. It almost seems like MPG is supposed to be like CHUG scale, but at a new price point beyond commander class.
Excellent review as always. I'm upset that Takara has ended the Masterpiece line on a whimper. It's too small and way overpriced. The Masterpiece line was a fantastic toy line that Takara ruined. Thankfully we have 3rd Party to fill out the roster. So many missed opportunities by Takara to finish up Season 1 and 2. Look forward to the comparison video between this and the KFC.
My God. This company has fallen so far from where they were with MP-01. This thing is so bad, I don't think I'd get the KO without some major fixes. So sad they did Prime like this, especially for the end of the MP line. Thanks for showcasing this, Sony. Stellar review, as always.
If you think this is bad, you're high on your own shit. This is far from a bad toy. He's maybe a bit small for the price, but that's his worst sin by far. There are actual bad products that deserve the hate, but this isn't one of them. You can say it's not your thing, but it's definitely not a bad toy.
Good lord, again this scalechart nonsense. Scale chart is POWERMASTER OPTIMUS PRIME. This is GINRAI. Checknthe damn cartoons, Ginray is carbot sized. NOT G1 Optimus sized. Off all people, i really thought you'd get that!
I've read a bunch of stuff about the Ginrai mode actually being in scale for MP as far as the Masterforce cartoon but that certainly doesn't agree with the scale chart you were using. Regardless, I'm happy ending with the size of Power Master Prime as an MP, even if it is technically on the small size.
For the last masterpiece or continuation of M.P.G. its ok the figure does go with other figures in the Masterpiece line. I have a suspension that M.P.G figures are going to be smaller in scale going forward.
We'll have to see how they handle another "pure" G1 character MP when they get to it (Like Jazz or something) before we can say for sure they are changing scales. I can buy maybe for non-G1 characters they will stick to this since Ginrai here is basically in-scale with the MP Star Saber and Raiden was just kind of an oddball because of how they wanted to scale the trains. It seems like the upcoming MPG Rattrap is in-scale with the rest of the MP Beast Wars. But if they suddenly decide to scale MP to essentially CHUG scale now except still with the absurd pricetags I suspect they will be losing a ton of their customers. Collectors have been investing in the MP-10 scale for years now.
I wanted to get him for my chug collection but I can’t get past his head is sitting on a big blue pillow, looks real bad. Too bad I always wanted a new Powermaster Prime
I can't believe Takara is charging almost $300 for this. It's small, like CHUG scale. The engineering isn't anything impressive and there are panel gaps and robot kibble all over the place in truck mode. For all its flaws, at their current price points the KFC Powermaster Prime is the clear choice between these two, and for close to $100 cheaper FansHobby Power Baser is still a strong contender despite its age.
@@MrVentus1012Shouldn't Doubledealer be roughly the same size as God Ginrai? Because I think Power Baser with the God Armor is about the same height as Double Evil (my Double Evil is in storage so I can't compare them atm 😅)
I rarely question your rating score, but I’m not sure how you get to a 4 out of 5 with all of the issues this figure has. The price is *WAY* too high, it’s far too small for MP scale, paint mismatching on the cab looks horrible (how much does this cost?), the cheap unpainted guns that he has trouble holding, the head that won’t sit flush, plastic smokestacks that *will* break, etc. If this was an $80 figure I could see this being reviewed well, but at nearly $300 this thing is signaling the end of the series. I think there will be *massive* buyer’s remorse for many who pre-ordered this and many will bail on the line. Honestly, I think Haslab Omega Prime is likely my last “official” Transformer. Takara/Hasbro have gone off the rails with their MP lineup, and that’s the only scale (besides original G1) that I collect. I think this is a 2 out of 5 release for Masterpiece collectors at best. Granted I don’t own it and haven’t handled it, but I don’t think that would sway me. I’ve watched three reviews at this point on MPG-09, and it’s just a hot mess.
@ what do you mean? I take it you ordered this and love it? I’d say the vast majority of collectors would agree with me. Just go through the comments on reviews and see how many think this is a great figure (not many). Even if you love it, I assume you realize it’s overpriced and very flawed. Or do you think this is a perfect figure that fits into the Masterpiece lineup perfectly, lacks any major flaws and is priced appropriately for what it is? I think I’m pretty grounded in reality as someone who has collected Transformers for decades, bought nearly every MP figure from MP-01 onward and as one who collects many high end collectible lines (Hot Toys, Soul of Chogokin, etc.) To me, the Masterpiece lineup is dead or dying. Did you love Raiden too?
@@keyboardt8276 it might be the first official “Masterpiece” combiner, but it failed pretty massively in the Transformers collector world. It was right at the top of most of the end of the year “Worst of 2024” figures lists. If I want a MP Raiden, it will be from Moon Studios, not Takara. The only thing I see that’s good about the official Raiden set are the train modes that look great (but way too small). Maybe if I collected toy trains I’d like it way more as it fits in there more as it was scale to them I believe. The Moon Studios Raiden actually looks pretty great, and it’s the right size, but I passed on it since Raiden isn’t a character I’m super familiar, though I did watch Headmaster once. I was very close to getting at times, and I’ll probably break down and buy it when Moon Studios decides to sell the set in a single box collectible like they did with the Zeta bots. I’m glad you found some things you liked about the official Raiden set engineering. I watched the videos only.
Thanks for the review. I keep being tempted by this figure, because thanks to Marvel Powermaster Optimus Prime is my favourite incarnation of G1 Optimus. But this isn't PM OP, it's Ginrai. And not only do I not care about Ginrai (found Masterforce to be my least favourite JG1 cartoon), it's also the least appealing look to me: Marvel > box art > toy/Masterforce. Yet I keep being tempted because of the link with PM OP. This review definitely reduced my interest back again to virtually zero 😃. One little nitpick though: Ginrai is not the same size as G1 Optimus, thus the MP(G) shouldn't be either. The official scale chart for Masterforce lists Ginrai at 10 meters, while G1 Optimus appears to be almost 6 meters. That would make Ginrai's cabrobot much bigger than G1 Optimus and this MP(G) Ginrai way too short. However, Masterforce and its scale chart also show that Ginrai's cab robot was also about two heads taller than Minerva, while Minerva was shown to be about one head shorter than G1 Wheeljack. That would make Ginrai's cab robot about a head taller than G1 Wheeljack, which the MP(G) roughly is. Thus I think this is a almost perfectly scaled Ginrai for the Masterpiece line, but at the same time a decently scaled Powermaster Optimus Prime for the classics line.
So, something I've noticed which I haven't seen anybody really talk about.. It looks like his basic robot mode has a sculpted-in Matrix within his chest?
@@TMReviewsthere is no chart from the Japanese continuity. The chart everyone uses for G1 is from Sunbow, and the animation company for Super God Masterforce was Toei. Mike's or not Mike's the chart that your using is as official as a drawing in a napkin. Just saying.
Well I'm going to keep using it, it's the only size reference we have. In the cartoon itself you can see he is bigger than this figure is compared to other MP characters so it all adds up to me. Thanks for the input tho
I'm happy for anyone who loves this, I really am and I'd never be a killjoy to someone who is happy with their purchase, but man I'm not feeling this at all ☹ Edit: heck even SS86 Prime is slightly taller than MPG Ginrai....if this is going to be the scale going forward what even is the point of MPG anymore? 😑
Excellent review as always...but I loathe this with the power of a million suns. This is Hasbro shrinkflation. I do not accept. I hope this line fails so hard they reverse course.
Can't wait for the versus comparison!

@The-Blurst-Of-Times that's what it should've been. Unfortunately, I think it's painfully obvious this new line is low quality, high price chug.
If you think this is bad, you're high on your own shit. This is far from a bad toy. He's maybe a bit small for the price, but that's his worst sin by far. There are actual bad products that deserve the hate, but this isn't one of them. You can say it's not your thing, but it's definitely not a bad toy.
I don't think it's a bad toy, just an embarrassing end to the MP brand and history.
@Th3Treasoner yeah okay buddy. Whatever makes you feel good about yourself. As long as you like it.....
I hope someone makes an upgrade set of shoulder cannons.
I've seen plenty of cartoon images with him larger, scale chart looks right to me. Either way, he is smaller than a car bot too
Why does your excellent channel not have more subscribers?
Compared to KFC’s version, the seat functionality isn’t anywhere near as elegant
Because that scale chart is made up. Is not official. It's made by a graphic designer from Canada, not by Sunbow or anything like that.
For the last masterpiece or continuation of M.P.G. its ok the figure does go with other figures in the Masterpiece line. I have a suspension that M.P.G figures are going to be smaller in scale going forward.
I suspect the cost won't be coming down, though. [grumble]
The trailer wheels look 👀 horrible. Reminds me of the lame earthrise version
I wanted to get him for my chug collection but I can’t get past his head is sitting on a big blue pillow, looks real bad. Too bad I always wanted a new Powermaster Prime
it should be called mpg-chug at real mp-price.............................
Mpg? Seems like mp chug
That’s too bad that it’s too small. Will be curious to see this sized with the Takara Ginrai chug from a few years ago. FH Powerbaser dwarfs this. 😂
Ironically, mpg super ginrai scales well with fh double evil.
@@MrVentus1012Shouldn't Doubledealer be roughly the same size as God Ginrai? Because I think Power Baser with the God Armor is about the same height as Double Evil (my Double Evil is in storage so I can't compare them atm 😅)
Overlord towers over super ginrai in the show.
300 Dollars? Sheesh, they're insane!!!
Do tell us more about the alternate reality in which you live
@@GrimSRT8raiden is actually pretty impressive from an engineering standpoint, it's the first masterpiece combiner
Is not supposed to be as tall as Optimus Prime. Stop using Mike's charts like is the bible, cause sure is not.
That chart was not at all from Mike....
@@TMReviewsis not the only size reference. You have the original Toei production scale charts for free in Tfwiki. ✌️😎
The moment I saw that backpack on the smaller OP, I lost all interest in this figure. Oh my god that's awful
I'm happy for people that like Power Master Optimus Prime, but man this guy is awkward looking
I'm happy for anyone who loves this, I really am and I'd never be a killjoy to someone who is happy with their purchase, but man I'm not feeling this at all ☹
Edit: heck even SS86 Prime is slightly taller than MPG Ginrai....if this is going to be the scale going forward what even is the point of MPG anymore? 😑
Not too excited about this character. I just don’t like the cab in the front and in the back of the body.
It looks like he's lugging around a dad bod
WHAT A HORRIBLE FIGURE!
Excellent review as always...but I loathe this with the power of a million suns. This is Hasbro shrinkflation. I do not accept. I hope this line fails so hard they reverse course.
I hear you, this might be my last MPG other than MP line repaints
they just don't know what to invent anymore
