Advisory for Norn or Charr: If you play as Norn or Charr, and you go full size, you will be a giant thing on a regular sized mount, and you'll look somewhat ridiculous. If you reduce your size, your mount shrinks too, so you'll still be a big thing on a little mount... it's just that your mount will be even smaller, and it'll be smaller than anyone else's, because the mount size range is not race-based. If you do go max size, you'll find that the gameplay feels slower, and you spend your time with the camera zoomed out more/embedded in scenery. Would not recommend for a first character; you'll miss visual details and may feel less immersed in the world. Advisory for Sylvari players: Your skin tone impacts the base colours for some of the racial armour (because the Sylvari armour is a living extension of them, visually). Also, if you play as Sylvari female, your voice actress is Bastila from KOTOR 1. Advisory for human players: If you are a human male, you will struggle to find any face that doesn't look prepubescent. Even if you do find an appearance that doesn't make you look like a member of a boy band, your ears will be weirdly pointy due to a low poly count on that specific body part. Also be aware - your generic nature as a human may mean that any armour fundamentally works with them, in terms of fashion... but it also means you'll never look fantastic and interesting, just... fine. No, strapping wings to your back and painting your armour black doesn't change that. Advisory for Asura players: If you're trying to make a "cute" Asura instead of a creepy little goblin person, please reconsider your life.
One of my mains is a male human ranger and both, the voice of this character and the stuff he's saying at times became a meme on our discord bc its very dumb... xD I love him despite that tho
Yeah, I picked a sylvari as my main and never looked back after using humans during core release. The male and female sylvari voice actors are much better than the other races voice acting.
While I really like the voice for it, I've yet to play a male sylvari because their run animation looks so dainty. It looks less like a run and more like a frolic, which is always very strange to me whenever the area is a hostile one. lol
I also found their story and the norn story the best, it's interesting but not too confusing. Like the human one, it is kinda a lot of human politics and it feels kinda boring to do especially as beginner.
@@datboi04 I mean you can do that with any race maybe even for Sylvari it looks the most ''natural'' by planst and flowers can come in pretty crazy colors too.
In terms of character size for jumping puzzles, you can get tonics to change your size/shape later in the game. I have a friend that plays char, but uses a cat tonic to do jumping puzzles.
I've played for multiple years, but I only recently discovered how important achievement points are. Id love it if you could drive home how much they do for your account, and why doing your dailies is worth it
I don't see the appeal for AP either. I often do my dailies because they're an easy way to earn 2g, but if I have other stuff prioritised I skip them. I do other achievements if I want the rewards or because my inner completionist tells me to. However I've never looked at my AP and thought: "Yeah, those are worth a lot, I should get more."
@@Realblack_m0nster Its the only way to get an account wide bonus to EXP. Which means more spirit shards. which you can convert to Gold in a few roundabout but efficent ways
They changed that now though. Other players are just shown as small whisps floating up the clocktower so noone are in the way for other players. I liked that change a lot.
I was playing one of my charrs and got yelled at for not making him large enough. lol Obviously he was the runt of the litter/fahrar. Someone has to be the smallest. lol
Hey WoodenPotatoes, Great explanation about race choices and what the effects of them are. This being a series catered towards new players it might be wise to keep in mind that a free to play character does not access to Lion's Arch until level 35. They can however use a way point in each starting area to teleport to friends in those areas.
@@redsocksandcrocs ROGER?!?!? lol, I’ve recently picked it back up, considering making a series out of it. Been playing a bit of each class to see which I want to do. Leaning toward thief.
My first - and main - character was a Charr, and I've always enjoyed the lore surrounding them. Although they're brutish, they are like that for a reason, as the Charr have almost always had to deal with wars - be it infighting between the high legions, their history with the humans and more recently their fight against Kralkatorrik's Branded minions and Ascalonian ghosts that never die. Visually, they probably have the most unique look when it comes to the face and body - with different horns, adjustable teeth size and angle and a variety of fur patterns. Heavy armor on the Charr mostly looks good, while medium armor is hit-and-miss and light armor is largely not great on them. Unfortunately, too many armor sets with the Charr in general have some awkward stretching and tail clipping that have yet to be addressed. Also, their shoulder pieces can look a little too broad and wacky at times, so you may have to hide some of them for the best look. The voice acting for the Charr is some of the best - save for the new male Charr voice. As sated in the video, jumping puzzles are... clunky when dealing with the larger races. All in all though, I rather like the Charr compared to most other races. The flaws that exist with them are mostly on a technical front, and they are otherwise one of the most interesting of the Tyrian races. And hell, they are pretty much the ones responsible for bringing the human race to its knees in Tyria between re-conquering Ascalon and the invasion of Orr - both of which put their respective leaders is such a tight corner that they doomed their own people rather than retreating or surrendering.
Sylvari and Charr are my favorites. Sylvari are genuinely the coolest race idea I've seen in an MMO. It's such a neat concept that this race is so young yet thrust into the world in this developed state. I love the implications of it. They have this near-unfiltered view of the world and they get to explore it. I also love them for fashion. They can wear anything and make it work. Then you get to coordinate with more colors because a pink Sylvari is totally normal. The Charr are partly because I played GW1. It's cool to see them as a playable race after that. I also just love their cultural looks. These giant metal buildings and scrap everywhere. I love how big they are. Their war-like mentality on everything. The different Legions for personal RP purposes. Usually, beastial races in MMOs are more like fuzzy humans. Charr go a long way for me towards breaking that idea with their animations and lore.
Hey WP, I have a recommendation for new player tutorial videos like these. I think that the average viewer is more used to tutorials in which there is a constant background change/slideshow-like format. This helps keep the viewer captivated and makes it feel less like a lecture and more like an exciting topic. While it is important to have your videos stand out from others, I feel like that slideshow style is already engrained into the minds of most of us.
ArenaNet have never added new races because it would be so much MORE work than in other MMOs, not because it doesn't matter. To introduce a new race, they would need to create: 1. A new city and starting zone. 2. 7 new personal story arcs. 3. New versions of every armor set in the game. 4. 9 new sets of cutural armor. 5. New voice acting. 6. New racial skills. 7. Probably more stuff I can't think of. Other MMOs aren't like that; that's why they get new races every expansion. GW2 set the bar so high for racial uniqueness that they'll never feel that the time and resources are justified in creating a new one.
To be honest, Tengu were originally meant to be playable in game at GW2 launch. So a lot of work os actually already done for them. Plus that winds area that could easily have a city/two zones. Also with us in Cantha, maybe after the Tengu wish to explore mainland Tyria, and contact those Tengu behind that wall. Then for next expac we get Tengu. It'd fit, and be way less work than a fresh new race. I don't think it will happen, but out of a new race or Tengu, Tengu would be my bet.
One other difference in personal story: at level 50 you pick one of the NPC races to help out. You have a choice of three races to help--each with their own story line. Which three (out of five) they are depends on your race. Humans or Sylvari can help Hylek, Quaggan, or Skritt. Norn can help Grawl, Hylek, or Ogres, etc. See "Racial Sympathy" in the wiki for more details.
Slyvari's seed turret is the only racial I've ever seen anyone use so if anyone's gonna be best race, its probably them. But as an Asura myself, I must say that the Quaggan are master race
Good explanation which I think new players will appreciate. One point, however - some of your audience may never have played an MMO at all, so perhaps you should explain some of the terminology you are using? I'm thinking of things like DPS etc..
what you say at 3:02 is a very important point as well, the roleplaying aspect . I never considered making a Norn engineer for example . Some classes seem to fit certain races more
I totally agree with you BUT :D the interesting combinations that you wouldn't expect could also lead to good character backgrounds. My Sylvari engineer is one as exqmple. I thought of her as highly interested in technology and machinery. And when she was tinkering one day, she burned her ears of. That is also the reason she wears her hair/leafs in a ponytail :D The small decisions you do in character creation are sometimes already enough to explain the most curious combinations ;)
Step 1: Do level 1 instance, get level 2 on completion, click on crossed swords of the pvp lounge, go to bank and check fashion options for your race and class.
about the race size and jumping puzzle part: I started with a Charr and it did need a bit of getting used to jumping with mine but I did get the hang of it relatively quickly I believe. I now reached the point where I jump best with my Charr and if I go on an asura I jump actually worse. most likely any new player will do best at jumping with the race they actually learned their jumping puzzles with, with sylvari and human beeing roughly the same size and proportions so switching between those is easiest. not to mention humans appear in a lot of other games and its what we are in real life, so those 2 races might the most comfortable learning curve for a lot of people in my opinion. of course if someone comes from another game where they played a smaller sized character and got some practice with movement in that size asura can be just as easy too. same if one has a similar preexisting experience with bigger fantasy characters and norn. though Charr do stand out a bit as their proportions and animation when it comes to movement isnt something I have really seen elsewhere. further on the general "what should I pick" question: as minor as WP made th story impact sound, I believe with how different those early story chapters are across races it can impact your enjoyment of the game. for new players they probably will either get invested and play a lot or drop it before getting to max level even. so if you are starting out but story and/or combat/exploration with your first character seems to be lacking or feels off in some way, maybe try a different race for a bit and see if it changes anything. coming back to my exprience, I reached such a favorism with Charr that any class I play is more fun on a charr than other races and I cant really narrow it down to any specific reasons besides "I like charr" xD and I do have characters of each races and do try to give them some playtime and enjoy them as best as I can.
I literally only pick charr now. Not only as they are my favourite race, but i'm just so used to their animations and playing another race feels alien.
Same. I tried to switch to my Asura for a difficult JP and I just couldn't. I was so used to doing them on my Norn that the Asura seem like they are too fast lol
easy dude, you play all races for the story achievements, then you delete them all and make only asuras, the objectively best race in any and every situation
Guild Wars 2 is the first game I've ever played where I really don't have a single "favorite" . All of them are really cool and interesting in their own way !
I know this is an old comment, but the Norn have an incredibly spiritual facet. They worship the Spirits of the Wild and commune with them, their armor can look incredibly shamanistic and even their combat dialogue can sometimes mention the Spirits.
About getting to your friends, every new player has all the way points unlocked for the starting areas of all races, that means when you start the game and finish tutorial you can just use waypoint to other races starting zone as soon as you're out
Just a note that if you're doing free to play, you can't access Lion's Arch until level 35 so if friends are trying the game before buying together it may be more advantageous to try the same race together. That said I think it's worth it to muck about in character creator for a bit for each race at first since they all have some pretty fun options, and when making a sylvari remember to click the light bulb symbol. Makes it easier to play with the glow they get at night
@@firby7341 I honestly don't know if it's restricted from the pvp lobby though it'd be funny since you can't go through the main cities. Some things to test via free account I suppose.
In terms of Fashion options: 1. Human 2. Norn/Sylvari 3. Asura 4. Charr (Asura and Charr tend to have clipping and some scaling issues with their armor due to drastically different body types. Don’t let that deter you though, there’s specific looks only they can pull off)
Sylvari has the same model as Humans but they also have a whole colour palate they can apply to their bark and leaves. Meanwhile all humans look the same. Sylvari are top fashion wars.
@@feniu10 I was mostly referring to the armor/fashion each race can wear. IMO some of the human/norn themed stuff looks out of place on a Sylvari. But in terms of the character/race itself, the base customization options are indeed unmatched
@@dustindiaz9493 18 characters in total? Or do you mean each race, each gender, for each class? So that'd be 18 * 9 for a total of 162? I think an account can only have 69 characters maximum (hurrhurr). You'd need a second account to get that to work, not that it's a bad idea. ^_^
I just finished the heart of thornes story for the first time on a sylvari and I can't imagine a better and more immersive experience with any other race. It feels so incredibly personal. From the very first moment you start playing a sylvari, before your character is even alive, you are right at the heart of the story. It is your wyld hunt, your special interest, your calling. Anet managed to make you feel like a chosen one, without making you a chose one, which is really, really cool. Especially since the story also emphasizes that a wyld hunt can fail. All the other races kind of stumble into the main story. So yeah, if you want the most emotionally intense story, definitely play a sylvari.

I'd love a guide to gear, crafting and stats as someone who's been off the game for years
Idea for future episode for new players guide: "advice on what new players should analyze about stats on early levels", I know it is that relevant on early levels since content is trivial, but it will create the thinking on what a player should start looking forward when getting close to level 80 and moving forward. I know Teapot and Nike made a video with a similar subject, but since it was part of a stream it did not hit the main points for new players at least, so not much they could take home from that.
Yeah they definitely need to improve their armor fitting for Charr. I like the heavy draconic helmet design except they added a flap in the back exclusively for Charr that makes it look like a roach.
Its definitely hard to find good skins for charr. The og Orr heavy karma gear looks decent for boots/legs. And definitely check out the Charr specific helms they added in IBS, blood legion helm, charr war mask, and visage of the khan-ur (lol) for some made-for-charr helms that look pretty sweet. If I'm going for a non helmed look I normally use bloodstone visage or just hide my helm
Weapons appear bigger the larger your toon. For cosmetic wars people, that’s something to consider. Play them all. Get the easy achievement points for exploring the different races/story
WP in one of these videos you should mention birthday gifts and that it can be worthwhile to create several characters at the start even if you don't use them right away. Having a stable of characters already to go can also help if your just not feeling the class you have been playing on a particular day. Taking the time to set up a character can possibly dissuade from giving something else a try. And continuing on a class your not enjoying as much at the time could lead to quitting the game.
Amazing! Quick and to the point, and you even managed to cover and small things I didn't discover about my first character (charr) until years after playing. Great video, WP
Hey WP can you cover some of the Guild-Wars specific basic fighting mechanics? Guild Wars combat can be so cool, but learning about it as a new player can be very piecemeal and I'd love to hear your summary of how a new player can get the most out of the system.
One thing that I think is always overlooked in these videos about choosing a race is the racial locked skills (healing, utility, and elite.) I understand that most of them aren't as good compared to the class-specific ones, but sometimes choosing a race whose race-skills compliment the class-skills can make a difference. For example, I personally love the Asura's "Radiation Field" utility skill. It is a long lasting combo field that poisons enemies. I use it for my Thief, Necro, and Engineer. It works well with all 3 classes, but especially for Engineer. I can create a poison field, as well as the Tool Belt gains an additional skill that Poisons up to 5 enemies within a 240 (or 360???) radius around you. It also works well with the thief when using a short bow, as your auto attack deals additional damage to poisoned foes and you have access to Radiation Field immediate at level 11 when utilities are unlocked. The Norn have a utility skill that calls a bird to attack your enemy and inflict bleeding, IIRC. That syncs well with a Norn Ranger. I don't really enjoy the Norn in general so I'm not sure how it syncs with most classes. The Charr have a Warband Elite Skill where you can call on your Warband to attack your enemies. This is a pretty sweet skill for any class, but it syncs well with Thief, I think. Those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head so I thought I would share them. I just always find it interesting when people completely overlook this. Perhaps it's because most people don't use them, in lieu of the class-skills. However, I personally use Radiation Field in any class. I suppose the only issue that trait lines to affect race skills, in that they get reduced recharge or anything. Anyways, it would be interesting to see a video that tries to use these skills with the different classes and decide which ones work together the best in a build. It could change the way people think when choosing a race/class combo. :)
i enjoy seeing you produce content for newbies but i'm not gonna lie, i was very surprised to only see the character creation screen as footage for this video. i'm a long time viewer, been here since 2011 and have been listening to eod daily for months now, but i'm not sure if new players expect a youtube video to be more like a podcast. i expect this kind of content from you so i'm not appalled, in fact i listened to this video while washing my dishes, but i'm just wondering if new viewers will enjoy content that has almost no footage to go along with it. there are plenty racial skills you could've shown, how the armors looked on each race, and what it looks like to do jumping puzzles as a charr, asura, etc. i've seen great videos from you, and this one is good... but it can be better.
Yeah for sure, as you talk about the racial abilities, show them, as you talk about JP's, show them and how much harder it is on big or small characters. Show how armour looks on Charr and how a lot of outfits just have it swinging under a dress with a lot of clipping issues at times (Some suits work really well of course, just a lot more work compared to a human/salad/norn)
I believe the idea is these are shorter quick answer guides with his own personal opinions as flavour as a lead in to the topics, for example if someone is interested in a point he mentioned they can easily research more specifically on that point :)
I remember back when GW2 came out, all I wanted to play was Asura because they had the Golem suit elite skill. Back then, skill points were blue arrows and you had to acquire each one by one (jumping puzzles were REQUIRED for points and no mounts to cheese). I saved every point till I could buy the Golem suit skill and was so happy to see how cool it looked. I even used it in my first WvW, only to later find out race skills were crap and I had wasted my time and points (talk about demoralizing a new player). I quit after the event in the human city that opened the multi-element zone arena that was promptly taken over by clockwork creatures (I believe they were made by a Sylvari pretending to be Harley Quinn). I managed to level 3 separate characters through that single event. The zerg was fun, the exp was plentiful, and the loot was good.
I always create each of the options, at least one of each profession with at least one of each race. The trick is to match those that don't really interest you together: Ele Asura and Thief Charr for me :P
WP, when you start the game after tutorial a new character, will have access to starting maps of all races Example: you selected human you will start at Queendale after tutorial video, Waypoint for Asura start map in Metrica province will be available and so are the other starting map of other races norn in wayfarer, plains of ashford for char and caledon forest for slyvari. That means if you have a friend who started with you and chooses a different race, you both and party up level up via map roaming or story grating they choose same country like both NA or EU.
What a coincidence, I downloaded GW2 today after a very long break and plan on starting new character. Nothing serious, my heart belongs to FFXIV, but I miss GW2´s world.
Very good - I would like to have some data tables with the mentioned „small advantages“ in % that are there but I just believe you that it‘s not too extensive.
In the early days, and even to this day still, when I create characters, I'm legitimately thinking about who they are, why are they this profession, what is their personality like, what is their motivation, etc. And as a result of that, there are many MANY characters that were made, played, and then I felt uninspired with the concept and had no idea how to expand on it and they would get deleted. A good example of what I'm talking about is a character that went through revision after revision was my favorite D&D character, Ladon. They're a wizard that did no wizardy things, faught with a scimitar, and had a knack for traps, tricks and more "illusion" magic as a result. And eventually, yes they did become a Mesmer(also Sylvari), but I was so hesitant on this for a very long time because they do not *fight* like a Mesmer. They fight more like a Thief, and I tried to make Thief feel right for them. I even tried to go hard on the wizardy Elementalist idea, but none of that felt right. Then Chronomancer came out and suddenly this time bending stuff made sense for them and I went all in on the Mesmer. And this is the most crucial thing about this character: Playing the HoT story is easily the most hilarious thing because of how your character talks and is talked to and talked of. Ladon can best be described as an incredibly clever, energetic and friendly person who does not understand or cares about social concepts. So the explanation my friends and I came up with as to how the hell Ladon became Pact Commander is that no one else wanted to volunteer, and since everyone likes Ladon so much, they just kind of put them in the position since it'd be the least problematic outcome and Ladon has no idea what they're doing. A good chunk of their dialogue in HoT just sounds like what Ladon THINKS being a commander is, and everyone is just being very polite even though nothing they're saying makes sense. But despite all of that, their successful regardless because even though they don't say logical things, they do smart things. And if you got this far, I will say that none of this was intentional when I first made the character, but for the attentive that would like confirmation: Ladon is autistic, and they are nonbinary. I wasn't too familiar or educated on these things when I made the character, but their whimsical naivety and passive dismal of social norms were never seen as flaws or negatives in my mind, and once I did learn more about these concepts, it was very obvious what kind of person Ladon is.
hi, small tipp: if you talk about different animations on races, maybe show some off while talking about differences between asura and charr jumping puzzle visibility.
I always thought I kinda sucked at jumping puzzles, but today I learned it might just be because most of my characters are Norn or Charr and all are pretty tall....
Hi, I came back to GW2 a few days ago after many years. At 02:40 you say that size doesn't matter. Don't you have to select a target (enemy player) by clicking on him/her with your mouse in RvR / WvW? Yes you can shortcut "next enemy" on your keyboard but if you want to select a specific player is there any other way than clicking on the enemy? For that reason a very small Asura should have an advantage compared to a huge norn or charr. They are harder to "klick" on and they can hide better in corners etc. and launch an spurprise attack etc. Well... that's my experience in other PvP oriented MMOs like DAoC.
I would actually love to see new races, like imagine playing a skritt, or a frog, or one of those bird people. They'd all be pretty dope from a fashion wars or roleplay perspective
I've been tinkering on something that only works(kinda) for the fractals. let's say you're a human warrior with harrier armor, you can switch to the avatar of melandru to gain access to water fields+horn blast combo and regen boon shares. yes, the cooldown is insane but can be reset using the mistlock singularities, I've been using it if my group is filled with glass cannon benchmarkers in t3-4 fractals. so far not been useful during the boss fights, however. just one time I saved a group from a certain wipe but that was a lucky moment.
GW2 might have only five races, but they are so fleshed out you don't feel like you are being denied a complete experience. It also probably has to do with the fact that unlike WoW and FFXIV, there is no way to change your race and new playable races encourage to partake in such transactions or to roll alts.
Loved your vid. Do you have any that showcase the dumb things various races/classes say? Like "I could outrun a centaur!" (human I believe since both my Enchanter and Reaper say it constantly)
WP, I've played a while, but have always had difficulties playing with the boons and conditions. I kind of know what the standard ones do, but often forget the differences, how they stack and so on.. There are also the abnormal ones, that a boss might have or put on me. How do I play with this? Should I sit down and read the wiki to learn them all, or should I hover my mouse above them all the time I get a new one?
Not sure if I missed it. Also worth mentioning that female charr and female asura only rare use female armor. Most of the time they use the same armor skins that male models use.
Hi, a thing I missed is if you make key farm characters (the once a week black lion chest key level 10 story), the fastest way to do that is certain choices on a human due to the specific story lines. And preferred on a human warrior as some skills help there to do it faster. Or at least this is what I have been told. Also as someone mentioned the voices are different and the phrases they say are different for a race. I have all races, but I like human the least for this. I get so annoyed by the "I can outrun a centaur" that I don't play much with human. For me personally jumping puzzles are fine with all characters but it tends to be easiest with the asura indeed. For sylvari, human or norn I don't find it much different. Overall I take one of my norn, unless a mesmer is needed which I don't have as norn yet. I don't really feel it's harder on a norn than on human. Charr is different here though. They move in a different way and it can be very hard in jumping puzzles. About your point of fashion wars, I like the cultural armour of the norn the most and sylvari is very pretty too, of course this is a personal taste. Far most I like the norn as it fits better what I have in mind for my characters. If in the end you want to go for the fashion wars or have a specific thing in mind you like to create in game, it would be good to check out the Internet with all the armour available and especially also the cultural armour to find out upfront what will fit best. But also the weight will be important here, will you choose a heavy, medium or light class to play as skins are different and give different options. If you play certain content where it can be crowded like world bosses, zergs in WvW or even strikes or raids, I prefer playing norn too (or charr) as usually they stick out and with asura I find it really hard to find yourself back in the crowd and to get the camera angles right. But again, that's my personal taste about playing the game. In the end it all comes down to taste which type suits you best and what do you like to play best. Nicest way to discover is having at least one of each to find out for yourself. Good luck with making choices for new characters! :)
when I created my first character it was the tallest Norn possible to make. Generally speaking, size does not matter, but unless it has been changed...there ARE a few jumping puzzles that being too tall can very negatively impact your chances. Supposedly the same, however not the same. Back then I had to buy a makeover from the TP to shrink her down. Could a more skilled player have made due with the extra tall norn fitting into the shorter ceilinged areas I mean? Probably. Could I ? Absolutely not. Again, that may have changed. It was the year the game launched and Lion's arch (where the first puzzle in question was then located) was drastically different.
I disagree about the jumping puzzles. I think it's just about what you're used to. I started out as a Charr and now find it really hard to do jumping puzzles with all other races. Asura, for example, just feel too light for me.
F2P accounts cannot enter the capital cities for races until they level up. As WP mentioned, you can WP to another starter zone the moment you leave the tutorial instance.
You don't even have to go to the cities to play together. The first waypoints of all starter maps for the races are unlocked by default, thry changed this a while back.
For years I only played a main... human female... was cool... but at a certain point she was complete... all top tier gear... looks as i wanted... so then i started exploring my alts... this is when the game really opened up to me... i started learning all the classes... saw many of the personal stroy brances of all the races.... developing different chars for different niche purposes... no one char can be everything.... Now... i can significantly engage with most content ingame... by choosing hte specialist i have made for that area... of course open world is very forgiving so they all can just play there too... PRO TIP... whether you plan to play them or not.... fill your char slots right away... perhaps make one of each class... then leave them there.... Each year they will get birthday gifts.... after a couple years... these start containing incredibly valuable dye packs and other unique items.... My alts sat for years before i played them... but now i got like 8 chars over 8 years old.... definitely worth doing this

Advisory for Norn or Charr:
If you play as Norn or Charr, and you go full size, you will be a giant thing on a regular sized mount, and you'll look somewhat ridiculous.
Advisory for Sylvari players:
Your skin tone impacts the base colours for some of the racial armour (because the Sylvari armour is a living extension of them, visually).
Also, if you play as Sylvari female, your voice actress is Bastila from KOTOR 1.
Advisory for human players:
If you are a human male, you will struggle to find any face that doesn't look prepubescent.
Advisory for Asura players:
If you're trying to make a "cute" Asura instead of a creepy little goblin person, please reconsider your life.
Thank you.
Simple and to the point. Thank you
Gods this comment is so good and everything that I was actually searching for thank you
One point you forgot to bring up is the voices. I've heard some players drop an alt because they didn't like the race's voice actor.
One of my mains is a male human ranger and both, the voice of this character and the stuff he's saying at times became a meme on our discord bc its very dumb... xD
I love him despite that tho
@@lizard_child5757 EAT MY DUST! :P
also some of the voices change later on
Yeah, I picked a sylvari as my main and never looked back after using humans during core release. The male and female sylvari voice actors are much better than the other races voice acting.
While I really like the voice for it, I've yet to play a male sylvari because their run animation looks so dainty. It looks less like a run and more like a frolic, which is always very strange to me whenever the area is a hostile one. lol
Sylvari have amazing fashion opportunities due to their varying colors and glow options.
I also found their story and the norn story the best, it's interesting but not too confusing. Like the human one, it is kinda a lot of human politics and it feels kinda boring to do especially as beginner.
Sylvari Master Race
@@datboi04 I mean you can do that with any race maybe even for Sylvari it looks the most ''natural'' by planst and flowers can come in pretty crazy colors too.
This was my idea until I realized armor covers up everything anyways and the biggest characters (Norn / Char) stand out amongst a crowd way better

In terms of character size for jumping puzzles, you can get tonics to change your size/shape later in the game. I have a friend that plays char, but uses a cat tonic to do jumping puzzles.
Happy to see you making content for new players!
I really think it will help grow the channel

I've played for multiple years, but I only recently discovered how important achievement points are. Id love it if you could drive home how much they do for your account, and why doing your dailies is worth it
This
Yas
Why are they important? I do it because I find doing them fun but I don't see anything special about it besides the chests you get periodically

As A Charr I remember being yell at during the first Halloween jumping puzzle event.
They changed that now though. Other players are just shown as small whisps floating up the clocktower so noone are in the way for other players. I liked that change a lot.
Luckily that was changed pretty quickly where now everybody on that JP becomes the exact same sprite.
Has a charr I stay above people on porpose in JP. I love it XD
I was playing one of my charrs and got yelled at for not making him large enough. lol

Hey WoodenPotatoes,
Great explanation about race choices and what the effects of them are. This being a series catered towards new players it might be wise to keep in mind that a free to play character does not access to Lion's Arch until level 35. They can however use a way point in each starting area to teleport to friends in those areas.
Charr and jumping puzzles: try landing with the back feet, not the front
6:50 This is an important point to me. As a new player animations are what is driving my decision for race and class, to a lesser extent.
wait.. you are playing gw2?!?
If you want to make jumping puzzles a little easier as a char, pick up the Endless Miniature tonic if you haven't already.
At first I thought they were just some Minotaurs but when I clicked on them the first time I was very surprised on how unique their design is
Sylvari and Charr are my favorites.
Could do without spoilers in a new player guide video
Yeah, let's avoid spoilers for the new guy here.
I agree, would have been better with maybe the different race character creation or some clips from jumping puzzle etc in the background
ArenaNet have never added new races because it would be so much MORE work than in other MMOs, not because it doesn't matter. To introduce a new race, they would need to create:
But as an Asura myself, I must say that the Quaggan are master race
this game left such an impact on me and remember watching your channel years ago during its honeymoon. Would love to give it a go again.
They are giving out living world seasons out for free, now is a good time to return.
That is also the reason she wears her hair/leafs in a ponytail :D
The small decisions you do in character creation are sometimes already enough to explain the most curious combinations ;)
*The Pentagon enters the chat*
Same. I tried to switch to my Asura for a difficult JP and I just couldn't. I was so used to doing them on my Norn that the Asura seem like they are too fast lol
easy dude, you play all races for the story achievements, then you delete them all and make only asuras, the objectively best race in any and every situation
charr and asura. Charr and asura, mate.
sylvari/human tend to have better fashion, but i do love me asura dodges
I agree, asura is my favourite even though I went with norn first

@@st4rpt_603 pffff those drunktards ? :D
Guild Wars 2 is the first game I've ever played where I really don't have a single "favorite" . All of them are really cool and interesting in their own way !
I have a Sylvari druid which seems the natural choice to me. However I do really want shapeshifting and the Norn have the closest thing
Was that pun intentional?
Makes it easier to play with the glow they get at night
but you can just teleport through the pvp lobby? or do you need an expansion for that?oO
@@firby7341 I honestly don't know if it's restricted from the pvp lobby though it'd be funny since you can't go through the main cities. Some things to test via free account I suppose.

In terms of Fashion options:
1. Human
2. Norn/Sylvari
3. Asura
4. Charr
(Asura and Charr tend to have clipping and some scaling issues with their armor due to drastically different body types.
When I got my first charr back in days, every vista was deadly for me 😅
My flame will always burn for Norn. Although I have a soft spot for seeing sylvari, so i am glad they are relatively popular.

You'd need a second account to get that to work, not that it's a bad idea. ^_^
@@KalibreSteelblast 10 characters with each having a unique class....and i wil have to repeat one class
Charr master race.
true. I just think they need to make armor fit better on charr, it allways looks like the armor is stretched.
Yeah they definitely need to improve their armor fitting for Charr. I like the heavy draconic helmet design except they added a flap in the back exclusively for Charr that makes it look like a roach.
@@paulogaspar8295 it is unfortunate but true, it helps if you pick a smaller physique but many times the armor looks slightly off.
But that has nothing to do with your character's race.
Hey WP can you cover some of the Guild-Wars specific basic fighting mechanics? Guild Wars combat can be so cool, but learning about it as a new player can be very piecemeal and I'd love to hear your summary of how a new player can get the most out of the system.
If we ever got a 6th Race, only one I could see us getting is Tengu and that's it.
I agree, some footage of the races would have been appreciated for new players. Not everyone watching might have booted up the game yet.
whoaah, all these videoes!! Got some catching up to do!
They need to bring the Siege of Lion's Arch back. That was fun as hell.
Great breakdown for the newbies!
My asura deadeye is rocking a Boba Fett inspired look. I love how he looks like a little bobblehead with his oversized helmet! Haha
Thanks a lot, very useful!
Good video. Exactly the sort of thing I would link to my friends.
I always create each of the options, at least one of each profession with at least one of each race. The trick is to match those that don't really interest you together: Ele Asura and Thief Charr for me :P
Charr is my favourite, but they really need to make some good looking helmets for them, they're all so stretched and just bad fitting
Go helmetless. Flaunt those magnificent manes and horns.
I use Horns of the Dragon Skin for my helm.
WP, when you start the game after tutorial a new character, will have access to starting maps of all races
Example: you selected human you will start at Queendale after tutorial video, Waypoint for Asura start map in Metrica province will be available and so are the other starting map of other races
norn in wayfarer, plains of ashford for char and caledon forest for slyvari.
That means if you have a friend who started with you and chooses a different race, you both and party up level up via map roaming or story
grating they choose same country like both NA or EU.
I feel like this new format for new players should have a special frame or icon in the thumbnail to easily recognize it. Otherwise good video!
A dedicated video on each professions elite specs cc abilities would help out a lot of ppl starting fractals/raids and other difficult content
This was helpfull. Thanks!
Imagine a Falco cosplay
I've been tinkering on something that only works(kinda) for the fractals. let's say you're a human warrior with harrier armor, you can switch to the avatar of melandru to gain access to water fields+horn blast combo and regen boon shares. yes, the cooldown is insane but can be reset using the mistlock singularities, I've been using it if my group is filled with glass cannon benchmarkers in t3-4 fractals. so far not been useful during the boss fights, however. just one time I saved a group from a certain wipe but that was a lucky moment.
Might get into this game soon. Gonna be Asura, because… smol…
GW2 might have only five races, but they are so fleshed out you don't feel like you are being denied a complete experience. It also probably has to do with the fact that unlike WoW and FFXIV, there is no way to change your race and new playable races encourage to partake in such transactions or to roll alts.
Pretty concise. Wouldn't mind if you filtered a bit of ingame footage in when describing the different races starter zones.
Loved your vid. Do you have any that showcase the dumb things various races/classes say? Like "I could outrun a centaur!" (human I believe since both my Enchanter and Reaper say it constantly)
Just because of jumping puzzles I made an Asura Mesmer funny enough he is my main now, I agree about the dyes but I don't mind.
Does the goddess blessing matter when u create a character?
A tengu if the gods one day will it so.
race does have one small dependence in the 2nf act of the story; your race limits what minor race you can partner with.
Are you going to do something similar for classes?
I wanna recommend maybe putting the comment in the end of the video, like a honorable mention for bringing the topic up.
About Jps and playing as Charr or Norn. Use miniature tonic if you can.
It keeps saying Account Creation Failed. You are not authorized to create an account. Has it been discontinued?
when I created my first character it was the tallest Norn possible to make. It was the year the game launched and Lion's arch (where the first puzzle in question was then located) was drastically different.
hello what i should to pick? human or sylvari?
Hi, if you chose to be a warrior, your stile of combat, atacks and abilities change if you are a difetent race?
Said it before and I'll say it again! Each profession should get its own video! Maybe one generalized video but all of them NEED a specific one.
I really need to make a habit of liking every video...
I disagree about the jumping puzzles. I think it's just about what you're used to. I started out as a Charr and now find it really hard to do jumping puzzles with all other races. Asura, for example, just feel too light for me.
Just fyi, Lion's Arch is not available to F2P players until level 35. So using the waypoints in the race starter areas is the only way to go.
Maybe a Conquest 101 would be a good vid for new players, seing that you can, basically, jump right into PvP after the tutorial.
I made a charr and I really like how the char look but I'm not too into the Indistrial vibe so I might make a Sylvari or asura too
I saw you using some kind of mount wheel to mount up... how did you get that?
github.com/Friendly0Fire/GW2Radial That's the mod you want. Don't worry, Anet approves of it.
@@KalibreSteelblast Thank you!!
My alts sat for years before i played them... but now i got like 8 chars over 8 years old.... definitely worth doing this
Please learn how to use ellipses correctly. Your comment reads like an out-of-breath, overweight man.
@@KalibreSteelblast just spacers dude. Live with it. most people today cant read more than 2 sentences in a row, so i add the dots, to create visual space. See? I used proper punctuation here. I this really better? Why you being a prick anyway?
@@narottamzakheim5051 You don't need to use ellipses to create visual space. Just because you lack the capability to read a pair of consecutive sentences doesn't mean you're doing anyone a favor by overdramatizing your responses.
@@KalibreSteelblast wtf is your problem dude... grammar police? who cares? i see people use all sorts... hate emojis too? why waste your time coming after me for this? got no life at all?
