There were actually some politicians that wanted to cut PBS federal funding money and that would have shut down his show along with Sesame St. How insane is that!
His wife did say he could have a temper at home, but he had positive ways to manage it. Fred Rogers said when he felt angry he would go to the piano and play music to take care of the anger.
Fred Rogers was able to turn a roomful of hardened Hollywood veterans into crying children within a few seconds. I’ve seen this clip a million times and I’m always bawling by the end. This was truly a man of God.
This is the highest honor anyone can have, to obtain a lifetime achievement award. And he makes it about the importance of others. No one can hold a candle to this man. He was the real deal.
I was lucky as a kid I got to meet him back in 1973. He was loving and caring and made me feel like I was part of his family. He sat down and talked with me for over 30 minutes. I’ll never forget how wonderful he was.
Most celebrities today would talk about themselves or their political rants, Mister Rogers gets the highest esteemed award, and makes it about others. This guy is pure good.
…you do realize that this speech, and Mr. Roger’s show in general is very political right? Saying to someone “I love you, and you’re special, just the way you are” is a revolutionary act in our society.
I stumbled upon this just recently. I really did close my eyes and thought about my parents that adopted me. If it wasn't them I would have been dead or in jail. I love my them and they loved me when no one else did.... And yes this guy did shed a tear.
He really was a special man. So loving, compassionate and good heart. I watched his show when I was a small child in the 70s. I had a strict, domineering tough guy father. Most men I knew then (uncles, neighbors etc) were harsh and intimidating to a little girl like myself. I had never seen a man so gentle and kind. Happy memories from my childhood watching him.
Out of anyone I can think of in the modern consciousness, he certainly did the best job of embodying the spirit of Jesus. "For a long time I wondered why I felt like bowing when people showed their appreciation for the work that I've been privileged to do, and I've come to understand that those of us who bow are probably - whether we know it or not - acknowledging the presence of the Eternal in our neighbor." - Fred Rogers
“And then he lifted his wrist, and looked at the audience, and looked at his watch, and said softly, “I’ll watch the time,” and there was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn’t kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked… and so they did. One second, two seconds, three seconds… and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier, and Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said, “May God be with you” to all his vanquished children.” - Esquire.
Even in such a moment of personal triumph, he insisted that the moment be shared with everyone there Even to a group of adults, some jaded by the stress of Hollywood, adulthood, and personal strife, he never wanted anything less than to make the world brighter
I couldn't wait to watch Mr. Rogers every morning when I was a little girl. He made such a positive impact, at a time when home life was not very happy. Because of him. I knew i mattered..I remember hugging the tv set during the ending song when he would say he'd be back tomorrow. It's like we had a personal appointment and I was going to be there!
How sweet. I am glad he made your childhood brighter. Same here. My home circumstances were not great either as a child. He did bring comfort and calm to us.
I graduated high school in 1991, my first child was born in 1993 and the second in 1997. We were all his neighbors. This was a beautiful memory for us ..thank you.
my favorite part of this video is the audience making some noise when he says 10 seconds of silence, then suddenly realizing he was serious and shutting the hell up.
Probably the most genuine man that ever lived. To spend his entire adult life to help children learn the values in life and to love each other is most remarkable. Mister Rogers has more class and dignity in his little finger than all the psychopaths and self-absorbing celebrities in that entire auditorium.
I like the story I heard of the thieves who stole his car and then returned it back on the curb with a note saying, "we didn't realize it was you". Man made an impact on people.
The only person to make a speech that can not only leave an everlasting impact on you, but one that makes everyone feel good about themselves. Nobody can do that other than Fred Rogers
I came from a broken but Mr.Rogers was there when I was sad , lonely ,depressed , Suicidal ,Mr.Rogers kept me going. Now I'm. The person I won't to be. I'm in a good place thank Mr.Rogers for being u on screen & off. R.I.P MR.ROGERS U WILL MISSED BUT FORGOTTEN
Fred Rogers was the definition of kindness. It's not as if kindness is rare...but his kindness shown so brightly because he was in the spotlight, a place usually reserved for attention hounds and self promoters. Mr. Rogers would have none of that. To the world's kind people who are not in the spotlight, Fred Rogers salutes you.
You know if you ever have trouble reminding yourself of those special people. Just remember that Fred is one of them. And I don't think he even needs to see you now to know you're wonderful and special just the way you are
Esquire Magazine's take was excellent "Mister Rogers went onstage to accept Emmy's Lifetime Achievement Award, and there, in front of all the soap-opera stars and talk-show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, 'All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are ... Ten seconds of silence.' And then he lifted his wrist, and looked at the audience, and looked at his watch, and said softly, 'I'll watch the time,' and there was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked … and so they did. Mr, Rogers might be gone, but he is never forgotten . I raised my children and grandchildren on his pleasant and lovely words and actions. PBS should always maintain the neighborhood started by Fred Rogers.
I will always hold Fred Rogers in my heart. The Neighborhood was on in the afternoon in my area, and I watched everyday. Even as a teenager, I occasionally tune in, especially when I was having a rough time dealing with life. His calm, patient manner, genuine kindness, and belief that we were all special soothed my wounds and comforted me. All the lessons that he taught us, without even appearing to be teaching, are still anchored in the souls of so many of us. In my darkest times, just remembering that he genuinely loved *all* of us, whether we ever met him or not, kept me going. A truly good human being, who blessed everyone with his love and caring ❤️
I love this video, but I dislike the trend of a lot of songs, movie clips, and moments like this turning off their comment section. Part of the magic is hearing people’s stories and memories about the clip.
It's not a trend, you can blame UA-cam and coppa for that. Basically anything that could possibly in the most vague man or relate to children, has to follow certain guidelines and UA-cam or they run the risk of their channel being shut down permanently. So with something like a kid show or with a lot of other stuff that touched on stuff like that they had to turn disable comments because otherwise their channel could be forcibly shut down by youtube. If you look at the copper restrictions it's absolutely b*******.
I watched this speech of mister Roger's and it reminded me of the time that tv kids shows were so innocent and good to watch. Unfortunately that time has passed in America. Thank you fred Roger's 🙏
I really loved Mr. Rogers. If it wasn’t for this God-send of a man, my childhood would have been even more unpleasant than it was originally. It couldn’t be more evident in this day and time (2024) that we need more Fred Rogers’ on TV in to carry that special light ✨✨ into our children’s lives just as we had
Pretty cool to actually see all those millionaires and people of power be lead into a moment to think about those who have come before them with only a tenth of a fraction of their own wealth, sacrificed for that person, and now they are in those very seats as the 1%. Rogers was a powerful man in his simple convictions.
I remember watching Mr. Rogers neighborhood but I never watched it for very long because I always wanted to go outside and play and I now realize that it only took a moment for him to make you feel better about youself.

So happy to see Mr Rogers and always makes tears of joy and sadness for the times i got to share his world. And for how i miss seeing him on television. He could make the most hardened criminal cry like a baby. God bless you Mr Rogers.
