    This is Eastern Orthodox way of expressing piety and confessing our humble faith into our Lord and God Christ Jesus. In my parish predominant is the deep bow where instead of reaching down to the knee level only we reach all the way down to the ground with the right hand... we touch the ground and go back up. It is important to note that Muslims inherited prostrations from us as we were doing it way before Islam even existed.

      Islamic doctrine is that all the prophets were Muslims (one who submit his will to one God) and Islam was their religion. Time to time some evil people changed the religion and started worshipping prophets.

    Thanks you Bat'tushko. I'm not old but sick and have to take a walker to church but thanks God I can still do the poklon and touch the ground (that's how I was taught it when I was young). Prostration I can do but I only do it at home because folks start running to help me get up in the temple,.it takes a while to get back up (I really don't do this at home much anymore, but can a couple of times). I miss moving freely and standing in the temple. Thanks for these videos. I don't much look at UA-cam but found these videos today and realised that maybe many people, born Orthodox and converts, don't know these things. We know them from youth but often don't understand why we do it. Pray for me and my children, a sinner Kyril.

I live in Colorado Springs, CO but am from Mississippi and my family came from different parts of Eastern Europe. Some were Gypsies, some Slavs from Austria/Hungary but ended up down South for various reasons in the 1920's or thereabouts. Thank you so much for praying for me. I've had arthritic diseases since I was a teen but held together until two years ago. It's hard to walk now and due to my sins also have liver and heart disease now. @@hujanbatu1137 it is biblical. Look at the Old Testament the Bowing down before the cherubim and The Serpent. And it's always been a tradition in the Christian church from the very beginning. That word biblical is a strange one, because the Bible has never claimed to be the only source of God's teaching. The Bible came out of the church, and not the other way around. We also must understand what it means to prostrate before an icon. We are showing reverence for the one who has fought the good fight and finish the course. When we prostrate before an icon of Jesus Christ, we are showing worship to Jesus Christ, however we don't think the icon is Jesus Christ

      Dear Evan:
      Thank you for subscribing to our UA-cam channel. We post many kinds of videos here. There will be videos of sermons at church, and teaching sessions, and also something I call “monster movies”, and “axman movies”. They are not horror movies and there is no violence, but they are small teachings about Scripture or about the services or about theological topics, that I do what I’m taking care of my grandsons, Noah (“monster man”) and Owen (“axman”). I take care of each of them each one day a week, and although they add nothing to the theological content yet, they make the video more interesting!
      I’m happy to talk about any topic that people might suggest to me, if I feel it’s within my competence.
      Many of the newer videos are posted on Facebook and UA-cam. Our church Facebook page, which will have all the new videos we publish and also teaching, and sermons and audio and text and other important things is at @orthodoxnet OR web.facebook.com/orthodoxnet/
      My email is seraphim@orthodox.net. I try hard to respond people when they email me, but if for some reason I don’t respond, please don’t take offense and email me again!
      May God bless you and help you in all things.
      Priest Seraphim Holland, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, McKinney Texas. www.orthodox.net
      PS. I just returned from Kenya, after a month-long working in a beautiful Orthodox orphanage and school. I love all the children are very much, and my heart is in Kenya and in Texas. We are currently fundraising for a dormitory which is absolutely necessary, to take care of the 180 orphans. All include information about this project here, with the hope that you will be moved to become a founder or a donor. At least, of your charity please include in your daily prayers St. Barnabas Orthodox orphanage and school. I would appreciate that very much!
      St. Barnabas Orthodox Orphanage and school has 180 children that it cares for. Most are boarded at foster homes, each of varying quality. Only 20 boys live at the orphanage. Most of the children are orphans (109) - meaning that their parents are dead, or abandoned them, or do not have the ability to care for them. Some of the homes treat the children as free labor, and with so many homes, there could be worse things. It is very hard to know, because there is very minimal supervision by the state.
      Because of these children, and the danger they are in, in collaboration with “Orthodox Africa”, we plan to build a Dormitory, on land the Orphanage has purchased, and dug a well on. This land was formerly used as a school, so the buildings for the classes are there. Fr Methodius estimates that the building of a dormitory to house 180(!) children will cost at the most, $45,000. This amount is not large in the West, and some people have pickup trucks that cost more than this! It is a king's ransom in Kenya.
      A “FOUNDER” of the orphanage dormitory is one who sponsors a child, for $250. We need 180 Founders to build the Dormitory. Anyone who gives any other amount is a “DONOR”, and Fr Methodius (Rector) and Priest Seraphim Holland (Texas) have promised that we will commemorate all FOUNDERS and DONORS and their immediate family (spouse, children), whether living or dead, at every liturgy - in South Kinangop, Kenya, AND McKinney Texas USA, in perpetuity.
      Time is not money here - it is safe or unsafe children.
      The less time we take to finish this project, the sooner more children will be safe. Children need to be safe, and have enough food to eat, and have companionship and role models, and to be taught the Orthodox Christian faith. Every day without a dormitory will be a dangerous day for one of these children, as well as the others we do not yet know, because there is no room to take care of them and teach them.
      Fundraiser link with donation button: web.facebook.com/donate/387542218460795/

    • @joachim847
      @joachim847 3 роки тому +6

      Hello friend! I see you haven't gotten a response yet, so I thought I'd offer one. It is customary to mount your icons to an eastern wall of the house (so that looking at them, you are facing east). And prostrations are made toward icons, so that would mean we should prostrate toward the east. That being said, one may have reasons for putting icons on other walls as well, in which case a prostration toward them would not be towards the east and that's okay (unless your spiritual director has given you other instructions).
      There are several ways (I'm sure) to interpret prostration toward the east. Here is one: The sun itself is an icon of Christ (and by extension, the dawn horizon is an icon of the Theotokos). Unlike in Islam, we need not pray toward a holy city -- as Christians we can conceive of all creation as our "holy city". The interior dome in an Orthodox church building represents the dome of the sky as we see it when we look up, so you might also interpret east as the direction of the cosmic altar (as if being under the sky is like being inside a church building). God bless you and keep you! 🤗

      @@Marco-bf4uu Reading through prayers, you will find things like "O come, let us worship and fall down before our King and God." That's a prostration cue if I've ever seen one! God honors our sincere efforts, so by all means do all the prostrations you want. There are things to know, like "don't do prostrations on Sundays" but unless you have a pastor who can guide you through details like that, my advice would be to follow the instructions of whatever prayer book you like. Managing to actually do stuff is vastly more important than getting everything right. God bless you! Christ is Risen! 🤗

    • @orthodoxnet
      @orthodoxnet  Рік тому +3

      My short answer:
      The church does not see a need to justify every practice by quoting some specific text from the bible. The Bible is part of the tradition of the church, and not the cause of it. The Holy Spirit guides the church - in the writing of the sacred texts, the establishing of the canon of sacred texts, the ecumenical councils, our ascetical theology, and practices - all of it.
      One more thing. The individualistic interpretation of the bible is responsible for innumerable heresies and schisms, and also, in the West especially, for the rejection of the church, even by those who believe themselves to be Christians, because they "believe in the bible". One does not believe in the bible is they reject (or are not aware of) the church, which wrote it, and continues to this day, invisible AND visible, with discernable borders, to this day.
