A Spoon You Can Eat Is a Tasty Alternative to Plastic Waste | Short Film Showcase

- Plastic cutlery has been around for years, widely considered the only choice for cheap, disposable cutlery. Knowing the threat plastic poses to our environment and health, Narayana Peesapathy created a tasty and nutritious alternative: edible cutlery. Made with flours of jowar (sorghum) blended with rice and wheat, the spoons contain no chemicals, preservatives, fat, emulsifiers, artificial colors, or milk products. They're 100 percent natural, biodegradable, and come in a variety of sweet and savory flavors. Black Ticket Films and The Better India teamed up to produce this short film about how, from now on, finishing your meal might have a new meaning.

This is a brilliant idea. My only criticism is they should package the utensils in paper instead of plastic. If waterproofing is an issue, they could use waxed paper (made with beeswax of course, not petroleum derived). If they started selling this in the US (and businesses like restaurants started using it) I'd be 100% behind it.

Im shocked that it has been at least 3 years since inventions like this are born and yet I am still seeing plastic utensils everywhere.
It takes time for an intenvention to GET famous all over the world. But the spoon does look tasty and great enough to GET all over the world one day
Mattaku Bodimasen i wish they were available everywhere
Me too
They're quite expensive. They should be able to eventually bring the price down
The same happens with other inventions: there have been plenty of water-powered motors, ecological gasoline, plastic made of potatoes, and even something as the electrical scooters were invented back in the early 20th century. But, you know, there's alot of economic interest supporting the plastic. It's a great source of income for the oil companies.
There needs to be a straw version of this, to replace Mcdonald's paper straws which dissolve in your drink.
I know right! The idea of paper straws is absurd, (not too absurd, atleast they're trying to make a difference), good intentions but bad execution. I doubt they thought of this thoroughly, though, because what about the consequences? What about the straw dissolving and giving a bitter aftertaste to the drink? This man's idea would be more reasonable since his invention is sturdier, biodegradable AND edible. In my opinion, that sounds way better than paper straws because in a way they're still killing the environment. Cutting many trees down just to make flimsy straws that dissolve in your drink, - which is disgusting - , isn't the way to go. Using beans, peppers, bread, rice and all that stuff is way more sufficient and cheap. If I had to choose between plastic and paper, I would pick plastic. Not environmentally wise but for the taste and logistics. In conclusion, I agree. Paper straws are trash and disgusting and need to be replaced with more sensible alternatives!
you can use silicone straws, they last for longer and you can wash them and reuse them. same I hate paper straws and the fun thing is that the paper cup is lined in with a thin plastic layer and then the cup is closed with a plastic lid so there is absolutely no point in using a paper straw, other than just ruining your drink
@@sahiraejaz4487 fungi will grow in your straw
which is why i use my own metal straw (but i think u can find glass straws as well) instead of relying on f&b businesses to change their habits 😐
I'd pick having no straw than a gross paper straw that is going to be thrown away anyway!
Spoon: Highly Nutritious and good for the environment.
Also Spoon: Comes in a plastic packaging
My thoughts exactly. The idea is amazing and the packaging shouldn't be too complicated a fix, the irony is just too painful
Maybe they could use edible packaging 🤣
There are film plastics that are recyclable, but many are not. For those utensils, all we have to go in is the sound of the packaging. Unfortunately it doesn’t sound recyclable since it’s a higher pitched sound like the scrape of metal wires. Recyclable film plastics, in my experience, have a lower pitch, like gravel. Think of the rustling of cereal box liners. And plastic utensils can be sent to centers that handle #6 & #7 plastics. Maybe putting the edible spoons in boxes-with no film plastic windows-would be a better solution. And improving the recycling process.
The plastic spoons come in plastic packaging too.
Though a wax paper type would be possible.
Right. I think they should be bought in bulk maybe 50/100 all wrapped together reduces the amount of plastic with just one package
I would be that person who would eat the spoon on the first bite.
