I used to think about immigration like most people. I watched a one hour youtube video of Caplan explaining open borders, and i was completely persuaded. Few times in my life have I changed a world view in one hour. I would put Caplan in the ranks of Freidman or Sowell as it relates to the ability to make a convincing argument for something.
Super cool going back to the OG episode to see Dwarkesh's evolution as a podcaster. His follow up questions have certainly gotten much more thorough over the years.
I think part of the reason Bryan has a hard time convincing regular Joes is that much of what he says is too much of a leap for most people. If the average American wants immigration levels to remain the same at best, then it's going to be very hard to get him to go from that to an outright open-border position. Same if they want more spending on education, and so on. People tend to change their minds in gradual fashion, and are wary of the unknown or radical change from the status quo, which is what $0 minimum wage, open borders, or abolishing education as know it is for most people.
The appeal of UBI is that middle-income people who've "done things right" and don't benefit from any entitlements think of it and say, "Why should taxes only pay for reckless people who can't be bothered to keep a job or something? If we're going to help people, help 'the good, responsible' ones also."
Wtf us this guy on about. If I pay taxes and vote to operate my country in a certain way and fight in wars and my ancestors fight in wars to obtain certain rights and a successful country. This guy believes anyone in the world should have access to those privileges before me hahahahaha
