I think the English in Taiwan has improved a lot, but you have been there long enough to know the simple words to use to make it easier for the locals to understand. My wife and I speak mostly in Mandarin at home too (in Canada). We have always spoken Chinese since we met. It would be difficult not to switch to Chinese with each other. It was pretty impressive that you guys both did so well.

It's quite difficult trying to speak only one language when you are in a multilingual fam; my family speaks Cantonese & Chinglish since my sisters and I were born & raised in the states. So, now, I speak have to speak Chinglish, Cantonese, and/or Mandarin to my son so he can understand all the dialects we speak in the family so he can at least understand what we say even though he tends to just reply in English. It's a good thing that Taiwan and people from other countries to be brave enough to use and practice the language which is a big step in improving their understanding thru face to face communication. Hope y'all are staying safe and hope we can visit Taiwan again soon~ 加油～

I watched it with my family and we are remembering they days when we were in Taiwan and trying to talk to everybody in broken languages hahahaha but they still got what we wanted to say I guess Taiwan is just a great area where you can improve your language skills and even more nice video 🤩🤩

I forget English words all the time now; the Chinese just comes more naturally. I am working on a MOE project to make our national university bilingual by 2030. This is called EMI (English medium instruction), and it is a monumental challenge. 2030 is unlikely, but I can understand why Taiwan wants to do this.
