Some overdrives have great distortion when maxed out. I also love my muff. Watching videos like this, helped me in the past to invest in these decisions with a little more confidence.
The fuzz needed to be cranked way more fuzz sounds best with the bass and mids pushe it needs to be crushing huge and thick otherwise i find it just dosent sound that great at all od or brutal massive fuzz for me personally
good demo dude . . consistant, solid playing, giving a good example of what you might sound like in a band . . and nice playing, too . . good groove, man
@@ranzen1662 80s Chili Peppers were great. Today, way too pop singles oriented. Muse, every song on each album, whether super heavy or light, could be a single. I've tried learning Hysteria and wow, I did something wrong in the last 25 years of bass playing to not be able to play that riff.
The distortion & fuzz are very close. I think if you cranked up the Z Vek a little more it would sound like the Big Muff. Also, if you added more drive to the VMC you can get distortion (to a lesser extent), but you can probably get that buzzy sound.
Distortion hands down for me jt has the appeal of overdrive but more and just stronger but the problem with fuzz for me is that it gets too overwhelming sometimes so for me it's distortion
Wow, rock solid playing, dude! I dug the Darkglass a lot. I would have liked to hear the ZVEX with a little less drive. It was a little over the top for my taste. The EH was pretty good.
Big muff fuzz sounds great in the "dry" setting of the switch (with clean mixed in). Actually, to me, all of them would sound better with the clean mixed in. It just preserves the natural sound of the bass better. But this is not a criticism, for demonstration purposes, this is great. Well done!
I liked them all, but not the bass too much. I prefer overdrives for a good basis of sound to add punch and warmth and then add distortion for brutality and fuzz for slower doomier stonerlike parts. Nice video! Thx!
I dunno how to pick. Sounds like a person needs both. I was looking for a demo of how this bass handled fuzz and I'm just as happy with that z vex distortion. Nice!
Hi Florent, really love the sound of the Darkglass Vintage Microtubes ! Quick question about the gear you've been using to shoot this video: I can see you are using Guitar Sound Systems' "Single12" bass cab and Guitar Sound Systems' Gold plated pure brass jack cables. Which version of Agilar Tone Hammer amplifier head are you using ? ...by the way, sorry but I will really need my Jack Casady Signature bass back ;-)
Hi Didier ! The Darkglass is just kickass, this is one of my secret weapon in studio ! The amp is an Aguilar TH350. Shit you don't forget... One day this bass will be mine !!!
Hey dude, amazing Demo. 2 quetions: 1. If you had to recommend one of the three pedal types to get first if you're just starting off with bass pedals? What is generally the most versatile? I LOVE the Big Muff guitar pedal and was thinking about getting the bass version but idk. 2. What are you playing in this video? are you just fucking around or is that a song? if thats a song, what is it? Thanks
Hi Jacob ! 1. It really depends on what kind of music you play. I think that the most versatile pedal is the distorsion one because you can have just a slight overdriven sound and go to an heavy aggressive sound just with the gain and the volume knobs. But I use the most the Fuzz pedal in many various contexts so... I use the overdrive pedal only when I need a colored sound. I don't really use it like an effect but more like a preamp when I need a tuby sound but I know that many people use it in a different way. If you love he Muff sound, just go ahead ! it is a really inexpensive pedal that you will keep for ever ! 2. I just mess around with the "Come Together" (The Beatles) riff ! Very fun to play with a lot of distorsion ! See ya !
The distortion was probably my favorite. The overdrive sounded weak to me. Just the crunch didn't sound very powerful. The fuzz was fun, but it was too, well... Fuzzy for my liking. So I guess the fuzz did it's job lol I think the distortion was the right mix of fuzziness and cleaness. Clean as in the playing was tight and together.
Anybody know if I turn of my fab overdrive pedal, should it still be able to play cause somehow I just bought it but doesn't seem to work if I turn it off?
Hi Jim, This is the BeyerDynamic DT770 pro. I think the Audio Technica delivers more bass frequencies. The Beyer is really flat with a beautiful stereo image. It is more a mixing headphone than a dedicated bass headphone. You can keep it on ears hours and hours. I imagine that the Audio Tech is more flattering. It depends on what you are searching for. If you want an headphone to practice 10 hours a day, the Beyer could be for you, but if you want to enjoy your lows, keep your Audio Tech. I also use a BeyerDynamic DT100 and it is more bassy and really comfortable. It could be the perfect one for you ? Love this headphone. Cheers from France, Florent.
Hi Nicholas, they are the standard mount strings straight out of factoring assembly...not sure which ones Epiphone is using. They are NOT flat wound for sure.
It's probably again a matter of opinion.... But to me it all sounds crap. I never saw the point of using these kind of effects for bass. I like a bass to sound as clean and pure as possible. Good amplification and tight speakers, exposing every detail and emulating the true character and quality of the materials the bass is built with. I can imagine the use of a compressor being very useful under certain circumstances and even, if you will, a Delay to thicken the sound a bit or a Harmonizer to give a (fretless-) bass additional harmonic qualities. I find the devices demonstrated in this video somehow repulsive. (No offense, by the way, to the guy playing here. I really dig his bass and his playing. The video illustrates very well the difference between the various devices and if I had to pick one it would be the Fuzz. 😉🙃)
Distortion was awesome especially when strummed or whatever you call it.
Zdank Zdale Guitarist Detected lel
True. It could easily replace a rhythm guitar in a 3-piece rock band while the lead guitarist is soloing
Some overdrives have great distortion when maxed out. I also love my muff. Watching videos like this, helped me in the past to invest in these decisions with a little more confidence.
moustaches make the difference
HA HA HE DOES HAVE THE COOLEST STACHE GOING DOESNT HE

Definitely adds fuzz to his sound
I loved overdrive
The fuzz for my ears wins hands down! Great vid.
Really to me it sounds to farty

I'm always gonna love distorted guitars.🔥⚡️🎶🎸
Daamn, the distortion and fuzz were my favorite ones :p.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the vid
Distortion - stockolm syndrome
Fuzz - Hysteria
Overdrive - Showbiz
Xd
I think Hysteria has the coolest bass line in the history of rock music
@@ranzen1662 ever heard of red hot chili peppers?
@@alexdavnport Yes, but I don't really like them. Everyone has their own opinion

Uh...yeah...pretty much.
Distortion and fuzz are great effects for bass solo, but in a full mix I'd go with clean or maybe slight overdrive
The distortion & fuzz are very close. I think if you cranked up the Z Vek a little more it would sound like the Big Muff. Also, if you added more drive to the VMC you can get distortion (to a lesser extent), but you can probably get that buzzy sound.
Darkglass sounds pretty good, the muff is a must-have for certain occasions though. I also like the Barbershop for a continuous tone.

i love the low end on the big muff

They're all dope. Different, but with similar uses.
Thank you for this video I really wanted to know the difference so I would buy the right one for me
The JC bass is my favorite, I have one for 10 years, been playing bass guitars since 1964..
fuzz
I like distortion the best. I wonder what it would sound like if you mixed the Distortion and fuzz together or mixed all three of them
I liked them all, but not the bass too much. I prefer overdrives for a good basis of sound to add punch and warmth and then add distortion for brutality and fuzz for slower doomier stonerlike parts. Nice video! Thx!
The Fuzz is amazing, definitely getting one soon!
The overdrive on the Aguilar Tone Hammer amp is quite awesome too.
Awesome video, very nice demonstration of the tonal differences.
I have that green bass big muff i love the dry setting sound its a great pedall!
totally agree dude, the dry knob is just perfect !

What is that riff you are playing? Its pretty funky
Do you remember what your EQ was for the clean?
Fuzz and overdrive
IMO, with this particular bass and finger play style... any pedal that saturates signal will sound like a fuzz, esp with high end rolled off.
Big muff for me with the Zvex a close second
Damn good review, thanks man!
I like the moustache.
The Fu Manchu.
What about gain ?
The overdrive and fuzz were the best I think. Distortion on a bass guitar always sounds too muddy to me.

Won't it feedback like hell in a live setting?
vintage tube for the win, but I do like a good fuzz.
Am I the only one who prefers the clean version? :D
I think so
But still, respectable opinion
Does anyone know if anyone has ever transcribed what he's playing into tabs? That's a long shot for sure but man, I love it.

0:44 overdrive
1:27 distortion

Overdrive is good for me
What is the name of the song he's playing?
come together - beatles
@@eriklazar5623 thanks bro
I don't understand it. I spent $4k on gear seeking out the perfect bass tone, but there's others who run to these pedals to destroy their tone

OD FTW
Epico.
Overdrive + distortion on bass is pure metal goodness.
Yeah but, it would sound like a "guitar" then. How will you hear it properly then ?
1 Firt Fuzz, 2 Second Overdrive, 3 Third Distortion
Name of the song?
He started playing Come Together's riff, then doing some cool stuff over it (:
sounds like numb from gary clark jr

Awesome!
Fuzz makes everything ten times heavier.

Not a fan of the distortion at all!!!
Nah.
All that gear and still uses an epiphone.. ?
Try a Jack Casady and you'll sell all your other basses… this Epiphone is THE sounding One ! The Mic is just Awesome.
Manuel an Epiphone yeah but it's not what you think.
It's not what you play it's how you play it
Really need to mute your A-string better! Other than that, good demo, groovy playing.
