    Guide worked perfect. Replotting 800 TB. 3900x, 128gb, 3060TI. 7.1 min plots. Used MSI Afterburner to increase GPU fan speed to 100 percent. All cool at 36C. So I've started the process and have come into two issues maybe you have an answer for. It seems like the plotter is offloading to my P3600 SSD rather slowly. Like it tops out the write when flushing at only 600-700MB/s and I see no reads occurring at all to saturate the bandwidth. The second issue I'm seeing is when coping to the final destination it looks like the files are being cached to RAM (this is an assumption as these drives are used SMR drives and should not be getting anywhere near the 190MB/s write that Windows Task Manager is showing). So this does help get them off the P3600 quicker but it also seems like it may be slowing my plot creation time by ~30 seconds due to I/O to the RAM. This is still extremely fast plotting and I'm not complaining but do you have any insight as to why #1 is happening and if it may be a symptom of #2. The HDDs that are the final destinations being SMR I can spool up 10 or more of those drives to copy plots, they should finish a transfer before being called on again. Maybe this is why I'm seeing slow offloading to the P3600 but Windows Task Manager shows no reads from the P3600 at all through the entire process.

Your confident presentation and sufficiently detailed explanations have taken away those fears. One question with regards tech I can find in my budget... can I use a NetApp 4243 or 4486 or even a NetApp NAF 1201 to achieve the same? Will they accept the same 18TB drive sizes? Many thanks.

      You can replace hard drives in a JBOD while they are running. That's part of why they are so awesome. The DS4246 supports all size disks in production today, but you should get an LSI 9207-8e as your HBA to support 20TB drives in the future.

    I recently acquired some NetAPP DE6600s and I'm only getting SAS drives to show up. My SATA drives light up pale green but not bright green like SAS drives and they don't get detected by my host.
    I remember from one of your older videos, you had trouble with some controllers not detecting all of your drives. Does this sound like a controller issue? And if so, which controllers do you use with your DE6600s?
    Love the content! :)

      I actually ditched ALL of my non SAS drives over the level of green blinkyness... I feel this pain. On the SATA not being detected, use the bottom SAS controller furthest left port. That should get both of them showing up. (assuming you are using dual I/F-4 SAS EMMs)

    I have an idea. Recently the major memory makers released 48GB DDR5 non ecc modules. So you can have 192GB ddr5 ram in mainstream mobo’s. Coupled with a Linux install would you be able to plot faster than this windows install you showed us instead of going down dedicated server route? Or does PCIe lane limitation hurt your HBA install? Maybe x8 is enough on the video card?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Рік тому +1

      I think the chipset itself limits to 128GB on the desktop boards if I am not mistaken, so it would take all the parties involved to solve this gross "oversight" of desktop users by not giving them enough PCIe lanes and RAM. I think they want folks in HEDT however so that is why they are doing this.

    • @edwardhewer8530
      @edwardhewer8530 Рік тому

      @@DigitalSpaceport - Cheers, reading up on some Deep Learning tech it appears as though PCIe lanes aren't that important for work done by GPU, apparently only a performance hit of 4% if going from X16 to X4. (I am assuming it's similar to this)

  • @z5st0rm810

    Would the bottleneck for this system be the SSDs? I'm getting 3.5 min plot times, which should equal around 40Tib per day right? Yet my farm only increases by 10Tib on a good day.

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  10 місяців тому

      It likely is the SSD eventually slowing down. If you do not have them in a RAID0, they will exhaust the cache zone and operate outside their buffered super speed and be much slower. You would notice a dramatic increase in the flush to disk probably no more then 10 plots in. You may also be running out of SSD space as it offloads to multiple spinning platter drives (you are writing to multiple drives yes?), in which case the plotter pauses.

    • @DigitalSpaceport

      Dual mining Chia + fork is now DOUBLE the GPU workload. This will impact the viability to farm forks and IMO forks will not survive. Not financial advice but I dont want to have to buy 2x the GPUs to farm compressed with (if these forks can port to compressed farming, thats technically not "easy") and if they cannot...you cannot use the normal OG farmer to farm compressed plots.

      There is a lot of really old information around the OG chia plotter and it hurting SSDs. It was indeed hard on them. It was replaced about a month after mainnet launch with the MadMax plotter and dramatically reduced the wear on SSDs by 3/4. Dead drives pretty much stopped happening then. Chia plotting cannot damage a normal spindle hard drive, folks in the media write that stuff but have no idea. GPU plotting only writes the final plot to disk with 256GB setups and dramatically lower volumes of writes for for 128 GB setups.

There are a lot lighter, cheaper, and quiet ways to send files to HDDs using SAS. You can use a SFF-8088 to 4 SATA 7Pin Female cable to connect to bare drives with SATA power from PSU. If people want a case with cooling they can buy a cheap 4 bay HDD retail enclosure. In fact that MB might have built in SATA connections you could plug straight to an external enclosure to make the drives easy to move in and out to put into harvester.
