Yes! This was my first Madeline Miller book, and I loved it. I will say that I loved Circe even *more*, which is not how all of my bookish friends felt. For me, though, Circe was a magical, un-put-down-able 5 stars.

Since you mentioned Lore Olympus: Madeline Miller apparently is working on a Hades and Persephone retelling!

Song of Achilles is fr my favorite read out of all the books I've read I just can't forget about it and how it made me feel the descriptions were so beautiful I felt like I knew Achilles personally. Still trying to find a book to match the way it made me feel.

Yeah I read it and liked it a lot but if it wasn't for the hype I would have appreciated it more going in with reasonable expectations rather than being left feeling underwhelmed. Sometimes the Internet is a curse.

You had me at "wine dark sea" and then hit me again with the Hadestown reference, subscribed.

I did enjoy the song of Achilles but circe is my favorite for some reason people who have read both books end up loving one of the books and not the other

Interesting review! I personally didn’t enjoy it, even if the prose was very pretty; I felt like Miller didn’t get the characters, especially Patroclus, who she made into a soft boy twink healer instead of the brick sh*thouse he was in myth. But it was a really beautifully written book, so I understand why people liked it. Just not what I was looking for.

Why do you have to bring up Hadestown! Once on this island does that too and its a for sure way to make me cry but also I love stories that are selfaware that they are stories 💜

I read this in a vlog couple of years ago after receiving it in a second hand book subscription box. The majority of my prior knowledge of the story came from watching the movie Troy when I was 13 (I’m so sorry mythology nerds! 🥹) I did really enjoy Achilles, it was a solid 4 star read for me. I have to admit, I was a teensy bit disappointed by it because of the hype and expectations I went in with… but then I remembered that 4 stars is still a good time, and being disappointed that it was a 4 and not a 5 seemed silly 😅
