- Gangs of New York (2002)
Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young Irish immigrant released from prison. He returns to the Five Points seeking revenge against his father's killer, William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), a powerful anti-immigrant gang leader. He knows that revenge can only be attained by infiltrating Cutting's inner circle. Amsterdam's journey becomes a fight for personal survival and to find a place for the Irish people in 1860's New York.

Alot of those Union Troops were fresh off the battlefield from Gettysburg so when they got orders to march back to New York and deal with the riots they were not in the mood for messing around

i like how the videos of this scene always has the mask slip off you weirdos to reveal the perverse glee in watching the government mow down poor immigrants that didnt want to get drafted, because in your mind it's a "just war."
While I love the scene, the toy cannons and ancient ships felt out of place and innacurate
@@hurr48 These rioters also lynched many black men in the streets and chanted "Hurrah for Jeff Davis". Traitors in every single way. If you want to defend the people that renounced the government and lynched black orphanages, then you should have no resentment whatsoever for jokers like the Captiol rioters who comparatively did absolutely nothing.
@@SStupendous Those ships are reasonably accurate for the time

@@the1masao LMAO
They saw it as an opportunity to settle the score with the riot as a cover up. Sort of like how any basic protest turns into a mob, people take the opportunity to loot and steal when all the action is being focused on somewhere else. It’s likely that they assumed it wouldn’t last long. But the mob in real life went out of control to the point no part of the city wasn’t effected.
The problem was the madness of the mob had more effect on the city destruction then a simple gang rival.
In a way it shows how the old world battle tactics of setting a location on an agreed upon battlefield between both parties is no more in this world and their rivalry was them staying in a past that will leave them dead in the future.

The fact that these riots really happened and soldiers were sent to march into New York City to stop the mobs makes this scene even more powerful.

@@fatty3383 and those troops had recently fight the Battle of Gettysburg. Those mobbers didn't have a chance.
Yes it was during the American Civil War during the Battle of Gettysburg and the Vicksburg campaign the Union Army had lost a great number of men in in each theater wore and they had a high income of immigrants coming from Europe which were mainly Irish and German so they made the Irish offer like depicted here in the movie where the Union Army set up recruitment stations right there at the dockyard and they would offer Irish men they would offer them 3 months worth of their paychecks if they signed up right now and right after they signed the papers they had 20 minutes to say goodbye after that they went behind a box of Trades and they got dressed they were outfitted and then military MPS were all over the place and they escorted them on the first ship heading for Washington DC for for training and so they could be closer to the front as a reserve unit

Also in Republics the army opened fire carelessness without hesitation on the own people. Not only in the old duchys and kingdoms of europe.

In reality, they had several options. Volley fire, after which they would have to resort to the bayonet because not enough time to reload.
Or fire by rank, meaning first line first, second line next, then third line, etc., while the ranks that had already fired were busy reloading.
If you had five or six ranks, you could keep up continuous fire.
@@AudieHolland More than likely would've volley'd.

@@AudieHolland CivWar period tactics/training was for light infantry ie two lines. In theory what you are talking about could happen but companies in column (echelon) was a movement technique not a combat one.
@@oldegrunt Modern musket firing tactics started with the counter march principle but over time, ranks were reduced from 10 to 6 as men were drilled to reload faster.

It's great how the end of this movie is pretty much about how, even if you consider yourself separate from history, eventually historic events will catch up to you. The gangs are busy focusing on their own blood feud, only to be rudely interrupted by a blast of cannon fire from the US Navy, which is what Iain M. Banks would call an "outside context problem". In the end, even their graves are overgrown and they're forgotten amid the stories of the much more famous New York and New Jersey mafia gangs.
