- Black Lives Matter protests in the U.S. have sparked a reckoning about racism and colonialism across the world, including in Belgium, where a growing movement is demanding the country address systemic racism and make amends for its violent colonial legacy. King Philippe issued an unprecedented statement “expressing regret” for Belgium’s brutal colonial rule in Congo under Leopold II, who ran the country as his personal fiefdom and under whose command millions of Congolese were enslaved and killed. “It’s an erased history,” says Belgo-Congolese journalist and activist Gia Abrassart. We also speak with Princess Esméralda, a member of the Belgian royal family and great-grandniece of Leopold II, who says the country has taken an important first step, but adds that “we have to go much farther.”

The reason the former colonizers like Belgium, Great Britain and France resist to concede an apology for their crimes in their former colonies is because the crime is still ongoing. After conceding independence to all African countries in the fifties/sixties the ex-colonizers outsourced the brutal control over the African people to the puppet presidents or other forms of governances they left behind to safeguard their control of the resources of the land and the exploitation of the people.
Whenever there was a president who wanted to work for the wellbeing of his people and refused to be a puppet he was systematically eliminated by a coup d'état or simply captured and killed like Patrice Lumumba in Congo.

Probably not a lot. Princess Esmeralda isn't part of the Royal Family, in the strict sense of the word. She's the half sister of our former King Albert and the child of Leopold III (not II) and his second wife Princess Lilian Baels. She wasn't raised as a princess, didn't get any of the civil list like her half brothers (King Baudoin, King Albert and Grandduchess Josephine Charlotte) . She married a professor and worked and still works as a journalist. I suppose she's a part of the upper class, but not nearly as wealthy as some other members of the official royal family.

The Belgian and American governments after a long period of the Belgians slowly but, surely losing their influence over the Congo or the DRC as it's known now murdered it's first president and made it to what it is today a tribalistic fractured and chaotic mess! So yes, abolishing the role of the king is important but, it needs to go further then that they will have to pay those people. Also they should help restore what they have broken and heavily invest in a FAIR and GREEN reconstruction of the DRC. It's a crucial region it's home to the biggest rainforest in the world except for the Amazon. The USA should do the same for the DRC and Liberia. France needs to do a whole lot of reconsiliation with a lot of countries from Guyana to Vietnam, from Madagaskar to Morocco. Same goes for Spain. I myself live in Belgium's northern neighbour and close bigger brother the Netherlands. We've had this discussion for 50-60 years about, post-colonialism and it's socio-economic, politic and geo-politic implications. It will be hard, it will hurt but, I believe there is progress being made. Because most gen-zers, gen-xers, gen-yers and even most boomers are changing their views on the subject. I appreciate what the Princess is doing. It is only a start. Fair trade: yes that's also a start. Repatriation of historical artifacts, real value reparation, and perhaps real support of Belgium to get Congo out of the mess they (Belgians) are responsible for should be part of the solution. With good will, all of this can happen. I would suggest a fund of trillions of US dollars to finance education, businesses, and some Congolese infrastructure would go a long way. What happened in the Congo by Belgium was a genocide, a crime against humanity which they have to atone for.
