I have a friend who told me she was pregnant. She'd had a couple first trimester miscarriages, but she was almost 4 months along and thought it was safe to announce.
Then, at 17 weeks, she miscarried. So she's in the hospital, and they put her on Prozac. And the nurses keep coming in every hour to check on her, and it's the same two questions, over and over.
"How are you feeling? Are you having any suicidal thoughts?"
She finally came out and asked why they were constantly badgering her about suicidal thoughts. They said it was a common symptom associated with Prozac.
She was like, "WTF? Take me off that shit!"
The association of suicidal thoughts and ideation with SSRIs is strongest among young people.

    • @williamdabb8622

Yes they treat the symptoms not the cause, but most of the time its hard to treat the cause without addressing the symptoms too. When you go to the ER because of a broken limb, do they immediately start cutting into you and do the surgery? No they administer sedatives and pain killers to address the symptoms of the broken limb before treating the cause of the pain.
If you have an educated doctor, they should be administering antidepressents while also addressing the root cause. giving them coping skills, teaching them breathing exercises, etc. while youre right big pharma lobbies and politicians make a shit ton of money and that needs to change, i dont think its right to go say its only for money. you arent saying only for money but still same vibe ya know? if im wrong let me know :)

Antidepressants are a lifesaver for people with mental health conditions. Such as myself with bipolar disorder. The problem with gutting medicaid is, as she points out, mentally ill people are on it, like my schizophrenic sister, and treatment for mental illness needs to keep happening for those people to be law-abiding, upstanding citizens in society. I've had to get off antidepressants, as have many of my friends, and yeah, the withdrawal is tough, but to compare it to heroin is just absurd.

let me try to help. Clinical depression strikes regardless of anything around you. One can be in the middle of Disney World, without a care in the world. Depression tints all the world.. this horrid feeling as though deep grief is upon you. But nobody died...
the wordt thing about clinical depression, is the guilt the sufferer can feel in that attempts of loved ones to "cheer them up" don't work. So the frustration felt by others, is also felt by the sufferer...
Those of us who deal with this (Jim Carrey is a good example) learn to withdraw from others... for sanity.. or preserving what is left. Clinical depression has physical symptoms.
And it IS a common comorbidity in much disease.
lucky you to be so cavalier about the psychic pain you have NOT experienced at clinical levels...

They're not the best choice for everyone. But they do help millions of people either in the short term or long. But yes. They have side effects. So when the commercials for certain drugs state "increased risk of suicide", is there a reason the word "increased" is used? There are also many drugs used to treat depression which are also used for neurological disorders like Tourettes, Epilepsy, OCD, etc. If a person with one of those conditions starts to experience depression or begins to have suicidal thoughts after beginning treatment, which they state they had not had before, is there a connection in that case?

    • @StephanieDraconia
      @StephanieDraconia 12 днів тому

The reason it can "cause" suicide is because when someone is too depressed to leave their beds and homes, it's hard to follow through with a suicide plan
The real problem isn't the medication, it's that the patient isn't being honest with their provider or reaching out, or they have and something has gone wrong where the person didn't get admitted to inpatient hospitalization.
There is also the fact that other medications can cause these same thoughts or actions--or exacerbate them. But since those meds aren't mental health meds, there's no outcry for those meds to be banned.

First, instead of slowly taking effect, I became elated about 1 hour after taking the medication. I felt great. However, what it did was get rid of my anxiety. I spoke out at work and then got shit canned. I then didn't have insurance and couldn't afford Zoloft that the Senator was so damn privileged to take. The withdrawal symptoms were a living nightmare - if you ever tested a 9-volt battery with your tongue (you have to been young enough and stupid enough at the time) it was like that but about twice as strong. It’s not a common side effects, but it is a side effect. That’s why you have to be closely monitored by a psychiatrist before the meds become stable.
Generally it takes time for SSRIs to woke, so the first few weeks can be hell for many, and then it gets better.
My ex took SSRIs before she switched to another med that worked better for her

@@Guilloboii Guess what there's absolutely no proof whatsoever that serotonin deficiency is the cause of anxiety or depression, you know why because it can't be measured in the brain therefore it can't be true.
It's also been exposed that medical journals where these psych drugs are being hailed as treatments and cures had ghostwriters behind the articles, in fact SSRI's work no better than a placebo its the patients expectations at the time that produce the little bit of relief they feel and this is further proven to be true when those drugs wear off completely and the symptoms come back full frontal.

That's why it's crucial to work closely with a psychiatrist. Many people on antidepressants start to feel better and then stop taking them. They're not thinking it through: you're feeling better because of the antidepressants, so you stop taking them because you're feeling better. Why are you feeling better? Because you're on antidepressants. In general, family doctors are in over their heads and don't know what they're doing. I've learned this the hard way. If you can see a psychiatrist, please do that.
