Re the jar of salsa - the first real "starvation studies" were done by French doctors interviewing the men who survived the Grande Armee's retreat from Moscow in 1812. Apparently there is a big difference in survival between having a tiny amount of food and no food at all - men reported surviving on a mug of tea twice a day, or one man who had a parcel of beef stock cubes received in a letter from home.

@@silvermainecoons3269 The show would intervein if anyone's life was in danger for any reason, but that person would be taken off the show and to a hospital to recover. Otherwise they do starve, contestants lose a lot of weight.

That daughter had a strong will and love, to save her mother. She is amazing especially because she had a challenge herself, but she didn't let that stop her. Many blessings to these amazing women, and these hikers.

Mom almost falling off the cliff made me cry. The love of a good mom is a force of nature; she was willing to fall to her death to save her daughter. Thank goodness that guy was there to help!

Talk about the guy being in the right place at the right time! That was a miracle to just stumble upon. Added plus it was all caught on his go pro. 2 lucky women! They all worked together and he gave the extra oooomppphhhh needed. Must've been intense.

All true except we don't know if she would've fallen to her death, or even hurt anything other than minor injuries. People have fallen down sides of steep grade cliffs, even multi hundreds of feet & come out virtually unharmed.
@@_MjG_ the full video of it goes into a steep dive to a rocky outcove at the bottom of basically a cliff. It would be at least a medivac ride assuming they could get to her location in time
The multiple rescuse story hits a little close to home but mine involved water rescue from a newly purchased boat. The 2nd time in same day I had to radio for help, my buddy was in process of getting tangled up in thick weeds trying to swim to shore for help. Terrifying. The same safety officers that arrived broadcast one statement: "You guys again?!".

Here in Norway with its harsh climate, we have a number of rescue operations after tourists who have done something stupid in our wild mountains. If a tourist has done something really stupid, like climbing barefoot and gets stuck on a ledge. Can they risk getting a bigger bill, if large resources have been spent on picking him up. For normal rescue operations due to bad weather, fog or a lot of snow. Of course, those who are saved will not have to pay.
I'm from Arizona and can speak pretty confidently on the last story. Every year we get idiots visiting from the east coast and midwest who think that when it's 115 out that they can hike north mountain, or camelback without water at 2pm. Every year we hear about emergency evacuations happening. I once (a few years back) lived in a condo near Squaw Peak and someone was stranded on the mountain in the middle of the night. I could hear the helicopter and could see it flying about from my balcony. She had figured that she could hike without water at night because the sun wasn't out... scorpions and rattlesnakes be damned, apparently. it happens with such frequency that the state legislature mulled over proposing a "stupid hiker" law to match our "dumb motorist" law. basically, if you ignore common sense, you will pay the cost of your rescue and helicopters are expensive.

I live in paradise Valley in az and I recall about a year and a half ago a girl from Boston came out here in July or August and went hiking echo canyon with some guy who was a police officer and ended up dying in someone's backyard. No water!

I've walked on moors and mountains all my life here in the UK. Everything's on a smaller scale but the weather is very changeable and can be ferocious. I regularly run into people who are totally unprepared for the conditions and/or have no idea where they are and how to get down. I've often had to abandon my day and guide them to safety. The stubbornness and lack of common sense can be astounding. One time at dusk after a long ice route we were making a dash for the valley from the top of Ben Nevis, our highest mountain, in the face of a blizzard sweeping in from the Atlantic. We came across a solo woman in street clothes and high-heeled shoes plodding through the snow and ice towards the summit - notorious for its complex navigation and treacherous cornices. She refused our advice to turn around, so we had to literally carry her down against her will. Technically I guess it was kidnapping, but if we had let her go on her chance of survival would have been 0%.
@@tullochgorum6323 Even a cobblestone street is difficult in high-heels, and she goes mountain climbing in them? More than stupidity at work there. I'm sure she had at least 15 credit cards on her. Those come in real handy on mountaintops.

Aww... that poor mountain lion! Practically a kitten! (With big sharp teeth and claws.) 😅 I heard a rustling in the bushes when I was camping near the Russian River. Spent half the night worrying about it. Next morning, it turned out to be a tortoise going down to the river for a drink. Speaking of which, there's high liquid content in salsa -- I'd rather have the salsa than the chips!
Yeah, chips would probably be very dehydrating.

I freaked out thinking that there was an intruder in our front garden a few months ago. Nope, it was a hedgehog. Them and tortoises give zero fucks about how much noise they make. Guess that's what happens when you're predator proof 😅
@@phaedrapage4217 The salt would also dehydrate you, so it would depend on whether clean water was easily found on how helpful they'd be. If there was plenty of water available then chips would be okay, though if there was plenty of water there'd also be plenty of plants and even if you aren't familiar with them you can test them slowly to see if any are safe to eat. (Typically you want to start by pressing them against your skin and then waiting to see if there's a reaction, then next tasting but not swallowing, then eating a very tiny amount, etc. It is definitely a slow process, but unless something is poisonous enough to kill you from ingesting almost nothing then it can be done.)
Baffled by the Humphrey's Peak story. I've done that hike, and the my profile pic is quite literally from that summit. No mountaineering experience necessary, and a very easy hike up and back in short time. How on Earth could someone get into that much trouble two times in a row?? Ouch.
He was probably an inside person. 😬 Not that I can really talk, I only go on easy hikes.

If you are not acclimated to high altitude it would be a challenging hike and someone from NYC would not be used to high elevation hiking. Also, there was probably a lot of snow up there. I lived at the base of the San Francisco Peaks for 37 years. The weather up there can change quickly. That was a really dumb time of year for him to choose to attempt that hike. It is a beautiful, though, and in good weather it's very doable.

Kyle - I appreciate the first story about the runner at Horsetooth Reservoir. I'm a Coloradan since 1974 and have trained in CO for 40 years (former pro cyclist). I can tell you this story about the young (less than a year old) mountain lion was unfortunate and sad. The Dept of Wildlife said the is mountain lion was young, likely lost it's mother and was in poor shape and starving. It would never go after a full grown human otherwise. So sad for both. Just saying!
I appreciate this comment..in no way do i want to take away how terrifying it was for Travis and i am positive we would all do what he did to survive..i just cant help but feel sad for the baby mountain lion 😕 but im sure he in no way felt good about having to kill it

A mountain lion will attack you for no reason other than you are in its territory ... They are not tranquil creatures...they are predators and a mountain lion will eat your child alive.....

@@barbarapaine8054 I agree it was a fight or flight situation. He's just lucky it wasn't a full grown, healthy mountain lion. The woods are dangerous - we all know this. There was another instant of a kid jumping on a trampoline in the mountains and his folks were not around or watching him. Guess who was? They saw the cougar at the last minute and saved their kid.
People don't think that when they are in the CO Rockies or just out for a run.
Humphreys peak is a solid hike but well defined until you get to that last bit above the ski lift. The rangers actually make a late day hike to round up such individuals.

I had a friend who was mountain climbing in the Yukon Territory with a climbing partner and they got lost - they only survived because they found a cache of food left by an expedition from over 50 years before their climb.

I've never felt sketched out by a cougar in 15 years of hiking the cougar dense area I live. But I almost got attacked by a cougar playing Pokemon Go at 3 in the morning. Cub crossing the road where I was walking with dilated eyes and a glowing phone shoved in my face, with its mother in the treeline.
You know you kind of did it to yourself going out hiking at three in the morning, I’m not saying you shouldn’t, but I’m sure you know that the cougars are more likely to be out at night

I've been almost run over by deer on three separate occasions within a block of my own house. In town! Twice by does with fawns in tow and once by a good sized buck, all 3 times because they were paying more attention to the cars and didn't notice my pedestrian ass until they were damn near on top of me. Luckily none of them saw me as a threat.

He didn’t say it was too much. He said it was too early for that many. Unless you do it badly and buy not subs. That would be unrealistic. It also encourages trolls to be nasty about what he has. He’s a humble man, that’s why he tells the stories so well. He doesn’t think he’s above anyone in it. He will get there but that’s not what he said.
The first 1/2 of the salsa was eaten with the chips. That's why half a jar. Lol I live so close to where Eric was saved...fairly populated area. So glad he was saved.
okay the mom being willing to just sacrifice herself so her daughter didn't get hurt or worse trying to save her made me sob a bit. my mom died when I was a teenager, I always feel that loss very keenly when I see instances of how much mothers love their children. I know not every mom is perfect, but it's true that no one ever loves you the way your mother does.
And.. it so funny to say 'lol you can't get lost' but damn, if you're in the fog - or even a bright sunny day dehydrated, tired, hungry.. everything starts looking the same, your reason fails you. Fog is especially bad because it starts to play with the sounds you hear as well.

I live in southern AZ and every summer at least 1 group of foreign tourists gets in a distressed situation and need to be rescued. They don't realize how hot and strenuous it becomes.

Have been a number of mountain lion attacks in Colorado over the years. A park ranger saved her life from an attack by stabbing the mountain lion in the eye with her hemodes she used to gather insect samples. I personally had a mountain lion stalk me on the Colorado River and I booked out of there before he could get to me. Very scary. I live in New Jersey now so mountain lions will not be a problem here. There are none. Great work Kyle Good luck getting to 300,000. 👍✌️
Actually …. Up by the Delaware Gap where the NE corner of Jersey is the highest point, mountain lion tracks have been found in the snow on top of that ridge. I’m seen tracks as far south as Lenape, Pa. on the roof of a detached garage. Seems that lion watched the people come home and walk to their house from that vantage point. Lots of equestrian and dairy around there. Fox hunting clubs, etc. Eastern woodlands are a perfect habitat for mountain lions. Especially the piedmont. I’ve heard stories of big cats in the Pine Barrens, too. They like to swim.

Yeah the mountain lion that stalked me on the Colorado River was on a ridge above me following me as I fished my way down the river and I kept hearing something I turned around and saw him he was a ways away thank God and I ran like a mad dog back to my truck. I suspected there were mountain lion in Jersey I hike the Appalachian Trail quite often. According to Google there is no definitive proof of their existence in Jersey but lots of sightings of the actual animal and of tracks. 👍

You know Kyle, since you've delved into the mystery side here a little bit, it might be interesting to look at missing 411 cases and maybe give your input on some of them, being an experienced backpacker and knowing what sort of things can happen unexpectedly. Just a thought, great content as always brother!
Also, this is a good time to mention the 3x3 rule for survival given some of the stories.
3 minutes without oxygen or in freezing waters, 3 hours without shelter in a harsh environment, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. Obviously there is some give or take here, but it is a good general guideline in a survival setting that I cosign as a biologist.
I like the 411 case stories too, but it seems that the guy who wrote the books about them frowns on anyone else using his books as info sources. I can't remember his name and maybe it isn't true. I don't know. But MrBallen used to tell them on his youtube channel and stopped. People in the comments said that that is why.

Maybe so, and I don't blame him, but MrBallen not only cited his sources but encouraged listeners to purchase the books. So it may not be true at all and there may be another reason. I was just looking for answers as to why MrBallen quit telling them and I ran across that reason several times in the comment section. Now, I do know that MrBallen gradually changed his whole YT story format soon after he quit telling those stories and that may be why. I agree that the books are another piece to the puzzle, and the stories are truly tragic.@@lannamama2034

Mr ballen was also getting quite a lot of criticism from people (myself included) who got annoyed at the poor reporting/ommission of facts and baseless speculation of "weird" or "supernatural" factors, which is a major problem with the missing 411 guy as well, and it was a lot of those stories that were the problem. I don't know if that had anything to do with him stopping though. I stopped watching after about the 5th "it's so weird that this person suffering from hypothermia took of their clothing and shoes".
David Paulides wrote all the Missing 411 books and made 3 movies about them. He invented the term "Missing 411" which he considers his brand, but by now it's become part of the language. It's like the word "escalator" used to be a brand name of escalator. He only takes offense when people use his data but then don't credit him.
You had me laughing when you said the guy was from New York city and attempted a high mountain climb in the winter.
I went in a trail with my partner. It was in an island in Quebec. The instructor of the place showed us in a map which trail to take because it would be easier and faster to return. We did everything fine until the time to return. We were walking for 4h, I was tired and wanted to be back taking the trial we were told to do but my partner wanted to go further a little more to take another trial, longer. There was a couple walking before us and they took the easier trial. So we were alone in the longer trial. After walking a while, we saw a huge wall of rock, land and trees. There was a rope to help who would dare try to climb it. I tried but I’m 60 years old and I was very tired, I didn’t make it. So, (and this is when things can go very very wrong! ) my partner said: maybe we could just go around to find a lower part to climb this wall… NOOOO!!! I screamed! We should NEVER, EVER leave the trail!!! We’ll get lost easily! So, we came back though the same trial and finally took the easy one. I was so scared to be lost and forgotten in that island that all the peace and joy I had walking in the forest and at the beach, watching the birds and the flowers, everything disappeared in a flash. I was so tired and afraid to not be able to return because of a pain in my knee! Anyway… living and learning.

First and foremost, I'd never judge anyone for perserrving their own life, no matter how bad because nature isn't fair. But man, I'd feel so bad having to kill a puma, even in self defense. I'd still try to, but man what a mix of emotions that must have been.

In that last story, going from sea level in NYC to high elevation, it’s very possible the guy wasn’t thinking clearly.

There is no fee for a Sheriff's Search and Rescue or even two rescues. Those who pay County property taxes fund the agencies involved in County SAR. If you use In Reach or other Satellite sos communicator systems, they often have a rescue insurance policy included in the annual fee for chargeable agencies involved or in other countries. Don't get lost(carry a map), always hike w a buddy, be prepared for conditions... SAR are dedicated unpaid professionals who need you to be smart hikers.
A helicopter rescue is $60,000.00, no kidding, sixty thousand dollars!!!
@@papajeff5486 what circumstances, agency and who called for them? These facts actually matters... There is no standard cost on helo evac and I know from personal experience there is no cost for SAR rescue work. CHP flies patients for free (tax payer funded) if they happen to be close by.

Regarding the hiker found on a webcam on Dumpling Mountain in Katmai National Park. The actual circumstances do not appear to have been quite as extreme as the news stories (and Kyle) have described. While it is true that the park is remote and not accessible by road there is a significant part of the story the news reports left out. Dumpling Mountain is about 5 miles, almost all of the way by trail, from the park visitor center and a lodge. The trail goes at least most of the way to the webcam location at 58°34'53.0"N 155°51'33.3"W is which is near the top of the mountain. Yes the guy got lost on a day hike from the lodge on a damp and cloudy day. It was interesting that he walked up to a live webcam. I'm glad that he made it back okay. It must have been a slow news day for the media to inflate this into a story into something bigger than it was.

Mine has both. I made eye contact with a mountain lion one night, while safely inside a vehicle. I've seen a bear in the wild while in a car, it was exciting but not terrifying. But the lion chilled my soul with his stare...
The last guy calling Search and Rescue is arrogant, selfish, reckless and simple. He inconvenienced SAR members and potentially put them at risk saving him. I hope he was charged $$$

The guy who killed a mountain lion with his bare hands was a badass! The story of the man who rescued the girl's mom from certain death was touching. The guy who killed the mountain Lion .. he killed a baby.. less than 6m old.. it’s not really that badass. It was inexperienced and clearly not fully developed. It rings different when you go around stating “I killed a baby mountain lion” than “I killed a mountain Lion”
@@cailin5309thank you. I keep seeing people call it badass. A 35 pound 6 month old mountain lion is little. At 6 months most mountain lions are only a few weeks or maybe just off it's Mom's milk.

He had to kill it with his bare hands. People sit beaming in pictures beside animals they killed with a gun from yards away from the safety of a vehicle or blind and act like it’s an impressive feat. This dude actually killed the animal with his bare hands in a life or death situation, so I’d say he earned badass status.
@@samanthawright8830 thats a pretty stupid question. Any reasonable person wouldn't want there to even be a starving mountain lion, period. Less would want there to be a starving 6 month old mountain lion, and even less would want to fight one. (I consider my self to be one of those reasonable people)
So to answer your question: No, i wouldn't want to fight a starving 6 month old mountain lion. Would i though? Yeah, depending on the circumstances i would.
Do you realize how small a 35 pound mountain lion is? So it has claws and teeth? So does a house cat. Doesn't mean I'm going to immediately put a hole in it about the size of a 45 if it was coming after me.

You miss the whole point of why people take photos of animals they harvest during hunting. It isn't because they can shoot an animal from yards away. It's because they are some if the minority who still maintain at least some ability to provide food for their family with the least reliance on others. What you say already tells me how little you know about hunting.
You realize how many times in a day we face life or death situations? How close to death we come on an average day? And how little control we actually have over many of those situations?
So yeah, i don't find killing an alone 6 month old 35 pound starving mountain lion to be badass. It's something i would avoid doing in most circumstances and wouldn't be proud of. It would be a unique experience and i don't shame/fault the guy for recording and sharing it, though. At the same time if i felt like it was a matter of taking its life or letting it kill or maul another person i wouldn't hesitate to kill it, by whatever means.

Hello 👋 Kyle, thank you for sharing these true stories of hikers who experienced near tragic events while on the hiking trails. I would have been extremely embarrassed if I had to call search and rescue for help. I have served in the military. In addition I have, over the years, viewed hundreds of U-tube videos which provide vital information on survival in the outdoors. Also, I have some 50 years of hiking experience in the high Sierra Mountains. Stay safe out there. 😊
there are two rescues that just boggle my mind. One of them is this hiker in Alaska coming by a trail cam. The other one is the spelunkers who go as deep as they can into a cave and find a little girl at the end of one tunnel. Both are just pure providence.

I had to be rescued off scarfel pike UK 9 years ago now.
I was deeply embarrassed and humbled by the sheer amount of people out looking for me.
After I had taken quite a bad but incredibly lucky fall.
They told me that rescuing well equipped people like me. That did everything right.
But just happened to be unlucky enough to have an accident.
Made what they do worthwhile.
They went on to tell me that they had a Chinese family that visited every summer.
And every summer they were called out to rescue them.
After a good few years of this.
The one rescuer gave them a map of Snowdon 😂😂 telling them what a beautiful place it is 😂😂😂

Man, that Mountain Lion story hits hard right now for me because I just witnessed a mountain lion come up over the bank and grab one of our barn cats 3 days ago. It was so horrific I screamed so loud I couldnt even hear that poor cat scream and I was only about 10-15 feet away. Ours is definitely more than 40 pounds and he is still out here and was the 2nd time I saw him.🥺
I saw a coyote grab my puppy. Well, first I heard the scream, the yote turned around to look at me with the little dog in its mouth and trotted off.

There were a couple of Bonanza episodes where they would hunt down mountain lions that were killing cattle.
Dude from Collins got drug in the local news and social media once it was revealed it was a kitten. Not surprising since he lived in Fort Collins.
You do know that it's not a domesticated kitten, ..a 35 lb. cougar, kitten or no, would be almost impossible to fight off, even semi- domesticated barn cats can send you to the doctor easily.
If you would have seen the initial reports in the news you would have thought it was a full grown cat. Also, from first hand experience with wild cats around 30 lbs, yes you can fight them off without major injuries.

Mountain lions are extremely stealthy and have no issue pulling the trigger and attacking a human. I have hunted for over 40 years and have been stalked by 4 mountain lions and all of them came within 30 feet, two inside of 10 feet. I was armed, moving slowly, 360 awareness, while cow calling. Three of the four were coming from above me in the trees. Very few cat hunters around anymore. Populations are growing and they have little fear of people.
A total of 126 attacks, 27 of which were fatal, have been documented in North America in the past 100 years. Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes, or fatal bee stings.

Human is the unique predator because they don't take the sick, weak, injured, but they go after the largest, most reproductive individuals. I have nothing against most hunters, but it's something I learned in school that I never considered before, and thought you might find it interesting.
Anyway, I'd like to respectfully challenge a few things you said. If they have no issue pulling the trigger on attacking a human, and they have come close enough to attack you four times, and you have never been attacked, then I would say that they absolutely do hesitate on pulling the trigger.
You were pretending to be prey on purpose. They are going to come investigate. Once THEY know that YOU know they are there and they see that you don't act like prey, if they aren't absolutely starving, they are going to hesitate on pulling the trigger because they are pretty sure you're another predator and they could get hurt if they attack you.
And as far as not having a fear of humans..it's not as sinister as you make it sound. It's not likely a species that doesn't experience predation is going to be afraid of humans until they have enough negative experience with that species to make them afraid. For example, there are big flightless parrots that have no fear of humans, and it's not because they are some super killing machine. It is that they haven't been exterminated by the super killing machine that likes to project it's killing machine-ness onto other species.

Everyone around Boulder knows about the mountain lion (problem? perk?). I don't think anyone out here goes running (or taking out the trash) without being ready to fight a mountain lion. I found one in our local tennis court.

Yep, that's how you say Multnomah. A lot of people fall off those trails there (and dogs as well... keep your dogs leashed). They are surprisingly treacherous for one of the most popular family trails so near in to Portland.
Im really surprised that refusing medical attention after that second call for help that he wasnt sent a bill for expenses. Being from NYC maybe he thought S&R was some kind of free Uber.

The stories of lost hikers always resonate with me because I got lost in wilderness on a class canoe trip once for, maybe, four hours. Realizing that you are lost puts you in a state of fear and helplessness that changes you. The man with the salsa must have been more level-headed than me to keep himself up so well. Functionally I'm less surprised at him surviving on salsa and more curious how he got by on limited water. Thirst, I hear, is of much greater concern, and being panicked and shouting only makes thirst worse. Of course problems of exposure are probably worse issues still, in a survival situation.
There are ketchup on everything people, hot sauce on everything people, and let's not forget the salsa on everything people.
No food, no problem. Salsa goes with everything. Roots, grass, roadkill....never be caught without your travel sized salsa jar.

a few years ago there was a SOBO "thru hiker"on the AT who in the space of a week twice called for rescue for no reason other than that the difficulty of the trail caused her to have a panic attack so brutal she was paralyzed and unable to hike.
I assume she wisely gave up after the second one, i dont recall hearing anything about her after that.
Oceanside is north of sandiego, so someone taking salsa on a hike is right on par.

There was a video where a man activated his emergency satellite beacon after he and his elderly father experienced a capsize while kayaking and were separated across rushing waters with the father on an island in the river. Mind you - they still had both kayaks. The video was framed as a life and death situation but I wondered why the son didn’t simply port his kayak back upstream and float down to his dad.

Sometimes, you're in the right place at the right time and things don't work out. You always need to be prepared to help. My wife and I were in Canyonlands heading to the grand view point trailhead this October. We came upon a scene of an unresponsive woman and people doing CPR. My wife joined in doing compressions, and I helped the ranger clear the parking lot and direct traffic to allow the helicopter to land. They got her breathing, but she eventually passed. It was very traumatic for us both as we were vested in this woman's fight to survive.

I love the concept of being outdoors but not the reality of it. I don't like weather that's too hot or too cold and I have really bad diabetic neuropathy that makes it very hard for me to walk and advanced osteoarthritis in my spine and knees. But I love living vicariously through you Kyle!

This is exactly the thought I had. There’s even a town in Angelus Oaks itself. I won’t pretend to be a great expert on the area, but hearing he was lost for two weeks had me scratching my head.

It sounded as if he was roaming endlessly but couldn’t find a way out. But maybe that’s not quite right. Maybe those injured feet kept him in one place and he was waiting for rescue for two weeks. 🤷♂️
I looked it up, he was near Bear Creek which is deep in the valley . I suppose you could wander aimlessly around there for 2 weeks if you had no sense of direction at all...quote from article, "His feet were extremely swollen and infected just from walking so much..."

The last story is funny to me. The amount of people out east (especially from a certain city) that need search and rescue or pass away during a hike is insane to me. Arizona is not easy hiking terrain. It’s honestly probably top 5 hardest terrain in the country.
