Played this at my uncle's funeral 2 days ago. He loved The Verve and saw them live in Wigan in 1998. We were torn on what song to pick but I was having a look through his CDs last week and found this song as a single, and the choice was made. They missed a few opportunities and included a few duds but, generally, they've nailed it. Really rich source of music, the '80s and '90s, so much to choose from.
Totally loved the soundtrack. The second I heard Franck Knuckles "Your love" in the first scene I knew this is gonna be good. Music..... the closest thing to a timemachine.
So this song just closed out the latest episode of ONE DAY, a show on Netflix that I cannot pull myself away from despite my best efforts. I’m suddenly torn back to 1997, remembering just how intensely this album resonated with me during those late 90’s years. Beautiful, soul-touching music. To the members of the Verve, thank you. Your music was there when i needed to know I wasn’t alone in this terrible melancholy.
Thank you One Day for reminding me of this song. The band is amazing. So underrated. They much more talented than all current artists. It is impossible to listen to their songs and not get emotional. Magical
I remember going back to South Africa after 3 years living in Manchester, a friend I met in Manchester came to visit me in SA in 2003, he was a massive Verve fan and could actually sing just like Richard Ashcroft, we went on a 7 hour drive from Johannesbuurg to the Natal coast, I put this cd on and he sat in the back seat of the car and sang every song like he was actually on stage, best drive ever!
@@saz4143 I wish I was there...sitting in a very wet Cheshire right now longing for a cold bottle of Windhoek lager, a ChesaNyama Braai Box and a decent conversation with someone that understands where I came from...

This song makes me relive my whole life in 4 minutes, the memories, the regrets, the moments, the feelings, the laughs, the childhood, the people I love, the people I’ve lost, the love, the nostalgia, somehow it makes me happy and sad at the same time. This song will grow old with me, that I’m sure. My soul song ❤
Just like they'll never understand the '60s, '70s, and '80s. The '90s were not the be all and end all people wrongly proclaim them to be. As for today's generation, i couldn't care less!
Born in the early 2000s, i totally get what you mean. The mainstream music is degenerated with the rap scene and pop scene. The 60s up until early 2000s music is a journey to listen to.
@nordmannenfrank6066 It's worth remembering that there was a 'Golden Age Of Rap' between the late eighties/early nineties. A Tribe Called Quest, The Jungle Brothers, and De La Soul were acts that used jazz to get their erudite messages across, which involved a refreshing self deprecatory attitude!
One of those songs that you feel blessed to have been able to hear just once. One of my all time favourite songs. Thanks Richard, Nick and the rest of the band for making what is simply a masterpiece among masterpieces. I love Urban Hymns. Wish I could see you perform live as a band again if not just one more time...

She sang this song for a cry for help. She took her own life July 25 2010 Orlando Fl. I found her body. I can never recover from the pain in my heart. She wrote a note for God to forgive her. I found this CD in her house and now I play every song. I hope and pray she has reached the heavens.

That's a nice story.. there's something amazing about sharing the songs you love with your children. All I need to do is play a song maybe three times, tell a story about the song or the singer and my daughters are hooked🙂. It brings me comfort to know that all these songs I lived for are now loved by my little girls, and that they form an unbreakable connection between us that will remain long after I'm gone.
I loved the verve in the 90s I remember my big sister giving me a pound for the duke box in a nice pub and saying choose some songs. I chose drugs don’t work, sonnet, bitter sweet symphony, lucky man and I was only 11. I’m 37 now and love the nostalgia…Beautiful memories. Fun fact the pub was near Hoxton market where the video was filmed for butter sweet symphony

It didn't chart high because it wasn't released as a single in the UK. It actually got its chart position through imports from where it was released, which is really impressive. Had it been released in the UK as a single no doubt it'd be another top 10.
Urban hymns was and still is in my opinion the greatest album I've heard in my 55yrs. It means something different to every person that bought the album. I have the feeling these songs are so great they have always existed. The verve just unlocked them some how. They brought them back to our world to hear them.

Very much agree this is underrated and it is demonstrated by the fact that "Bittersweet symphony" and "the drugs don't work" have always gotten far more attention. I just UA-camd "the verve" and the video for this was the ninth video given. In my opinion it should be first.
totaly it gives me a lovley feeling to sit nd makes me think of love and other subjects to dowith a guy i loved who hurt me but yeah lyrics are beautiful
I wonder if any of the band have ever read through any of these comments and realized just how many people they have given strength too and helped through the hard times of this rollercoaster that we call life

Yes. It helps.

Definitely agreed
4 sure. 2024 🥰
This is arguably the best song to never chart high. It's arguably their best song as well. Amazing.
It didn't chart high because it wasn't released as a single in the UK. It actually got its chart position through imports from where it was released, which is really impressive. Had it been released in the UK as a single no doubt it'd be another top 10.
Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye 🥹 fave Verve song
The 90’s just ruled in every aspect. Music, sport, films everything.
Agree but then I pause at films. 80s films do it for me more
@@Opalpurple38 The 70s was the peak for films.
Amazing how an advert can spring a tune from 25 years ago back into the limelight!
Please take me back to the beautiful 90s 😢
Me too 😵
Me too
Absolutely brilliant. Miss these days. Oh my days.... I'm from the same ends as Richard, oh take me back... What a Genius of a Guy.
Urban hymns was and still is in my opinion the greatest album I've heard in my 55yrs.
It means something different to every person that bought the album. I had it 6x in all
I kept losing it or giving it away to somewhat hadn't heard it but loved it when I played it. Beautiful album and the guitarist, he was a star in the waiting UNBELIEVABLE.
tc. ta ra pie eaters - knick name for someone from Wigan.
❤❤
Beautifully mixed, every instrument clear as a bell and such a great song.
Richard ni se imagina como su música me ayudó durante todo este tiempo a salir de la profunda depresión que sufrí a raíz de la muerte de mí mamá y de la separación de mi pareja... Gracias por siempre Richard, tus canciones sanan corazones ❤
One Day is a Fantastic Series, full of love, hurt, mistakes, what could of been, lost and found love. Past and present. What life is and always will be 😊
I have the feeling these songs are so great they have always existed. The verve just unlocked them some how. They brought them back to our world to hear them.
That's a very interesting observation 🙏✨
right mate
So grateful for my dad introducing me to real music 💙💙
The whole Urban Hymns album is a masterpiece and has honestly prevented me from committing suicide before. Very emotional album for me.. :)
Same here *hugs you*
Yea Mate believe it or not this and Tupac and manic street preachers spoke to me in my darkeat days and yea it's very opposite style of music but the lyrics is all I want the music is just a back piece. shows u ur in touch with ya self m8 head up
The album is best ever keep goin my friend
Facts absolutely facts
Hope the album has helped you get through what ever you were going through.
This is BRITPOP at its best !!!! ❤️❤️
Urban hymns, the verve were on fire with this album, great stuff.
you are here because you have a great taste in music
A beautiful song, really demonstrates the desperation of love
2019! This is one of the most underrated songs in the history of music. The feelings it gives! Simply beautiful!
Coco Drilo. How is this underrated?
True
Yessss
Very much agree this is underrated and it is demonstrated by the fact that "Bittersweet symphony" and "the drugs don't work" have always gotten far more attention. I just UA-camd "the verve" and the video for this was the ninth video given. In my opinion it should be first.
totaly it gives me a lovley feeling to sit nd makes me think of love and other subjects to dowith a guy i loved who hurt me but yeah lyrics are beautiful
I wonder if any of the band have ever read through any of these comments and realized just how many people they have given strength too and helped through the hard times of this rollercoaster that we call life
How is it possible that an amazing song like this only gets 5 million views and crappy songs get 100X the views?
Because they have shit taste :)
+Dave Kim almost 7 million
+Dave Kim Because this game out pre-YT so fewer know of it
Alternately they don't know what a sonnet is
It's the 13 year old fan girls that give the likes of Bieber and Swift their millions of views. They don't understand real music from the 60s,70's,80's and 90's like The Verve. But we are the true music lovers.
the important thing is that we saw it 😎
Definitely deserves much more popularity 😢 Great musicians
I cannot think of another song that one cannot fall in love with instantly. Amazing composition - great words, music, voice!!!
Probably the best indie music album ever.
I've always loved his voice and his beautiful blue eyes 💖
Brings back sad memories, but was my favourite song on the album. Helped me grieve my dad
