If you look for used but quality camera and lens, definitely go to Map camera in Shinjuku. You will be surprised how wide their collection is. Each floor is designated for 1-3 camera manufacturers, and the shop has 7 or 8 storeys.

Omar Saad Sorry but that’s Wrong
It’s highly dependent on the camera maker
Sony won’t let you change the menu language
      But canon will

Honestly one of my favorite little things about Japan is how the shops are set up especially the small cramped hidden gems you have to search for it’s like organized mass chaos!

Norm, super happy you made this video. I'm finally getting my Canon T7i (Or 800D in other countries) this fall for my journalism courses. I'll be bringing it with me when I go study abroad in Japan for a year in the fall of 2019, and I'm sure to buy some more lenses/equipment while I'm there. Definitely a big help! Will absolutely start making some UA-cam videos with it so your videos on cameras are always appreciated.

I appreciate the excitement that you feel when you go up the stairs into that favorite specialty shop. It reminds me of the times I would climb the stairs to a comic book shop in Ann Arbor (Michigan), and later when I would climb the stairs to a used record shop in Alexandria (Virginia). Somehow the stairs add to the experience.

I visited that exact place by accident. You showed the light shop on the corner, and I knew... I LITERALLY went in because when I saw it... I thought... Norm checks out these types of places. I was blown away. I totally get the "best photos" remark... as I limped by I thought the same thing of the person behind the counter... Just felt so authentic. City stuff was kinda boring me, and really wanted to see what Japan might have been like in the old days... It did not disappoint. I was tapping my toe to that music sir... Awesome video!

I love old cameras! the camera I learned on was a sears camera from the 90's, i think, and it was really funny because most of the people in my classes had newer cameras that wouldn't work at all without batteries, but the batteries in mine only powered the light meter. The rest is mechanical. Which turned out to be really good for me because on the first day of class, my battery died, and I couldn't find a replacement for months! It really made me develop instincts for my aperture and exposure that really are priceless to me now.
And my professor let me shoot on a TLR she had, for a few weeks and that's just really fun. I used it for a project where I was shooting in public and TLRs are just great for shooting from the hip. I've been wanting to beef up my camera collection and it's like the second on my list (after a digital camera).

Great video as always ... Wandering around stores in Akihabara is always fun (and when you are like me and only get to go to Japan every 1.5-2 years then it's different each time).
I could do with a new camera ... Unfortunately I'd need to get it before my next trip so I could work out how to use it properly ... And due to various things I'll probably end up just using my phone again (takes better pics than my old camera anyway)
Btw sometimes your onscreen text during the video could really do with being onscreen a bit longer particularly with the font you use (e.g. that price comparison site name).

Another note about Yodabashi. The Points Card and the Tex Free are both great tips. I don't know if it is still an option, but when i was at yodabashi last year they also offered an additional t e n percent off if you used a VISA CC. Now, I know not everyone has or wants to use credit.. But when you stack that with the Tex Free and the Points discount you are talking about some serious savings.
Also consider that Yodabashi sells a LOT of goods beyond just consumer and household electronics. They sell a lot of popular tourist items like sunscreen, pens, snacks, candy and cosmetics. ALL Tex Free shops have requirements that you spend some minimum amount. Unusually between 5000 - 10000 yen to benefit from Tex Free. So its often better to get these purchases all done at once, if possible. saving yourself the headache of finding a few itms to bring you over the Tex Free threshold.
As for mail-order... well thats great if you live in Japan but isn't really an option for those in a hotel or even an Air BNB. still always good to know such options exist

    • @NoshAbroad
      @NoshAbroad 6 років тому

I have nothing against Texas. Sorry! But I guess talking about CC's Tex and savings flagged every spam filter on youtube.

Thanks for sharing these shops and infos. Always like to see what gear you are using. I have been having my eye on a Sony Alpha for some months now, because she makes beautiful videos. But creating videos at this moment is not part of my live (and for that kinda money I really should use the camera). I do plan to create some music with singing bowls and intuitive singing in the near future though. Hopefully next year. Might start with my iPhone 11 though and maybe a the RØDE NT-USB Mini (but that might not be a good choice for outdoor recordings.....

Hi Norm! Im a regular viewer of your vlogs, and it has been helpful on my trip there in Tokyo last December 3-10, 2018. May I know the title of the EDM music starting from the 1:44 to 6:25 mark of this video? Im so interested to know because I love the beat of the music. thank you!

Hello Norm! Greetings again from Costa Rica, this was the first video I saw from your channel, at that time I suppose you were using only canon equipment to do all the video and photo work, I know this was not a canon camera review (strangely YT search pointed me to this video after searching for the canon m50) which somehow is related, since you were looking for the kiss m (Asia version)
Here is Costa Rica is hard and expensive to get camera gear, we don´t have any rentals to test the gear, so I personally have to do a good search for good reviews to make sure its the gear I need. I ended up buying the m50, really great low budget camera, love the kit lens included (24-70mm in FF size if I'm not mistaken),. touch and articulated screen, pretty good AF and canon colors! that is sometime I like more than sony cameras, is the colors. After I saw this video, I was really impressed about how much good quality gear you can get in Japan, personally I started do some search on internet and saw that canon / nikon it's a better on budget options than sony, since does 2 manufactures have more time in the photo industry, you can really get good old pro glass on cheap, specially now that canon and nikon are moving to mirrorless systems... just need to buy an adapter and do a good search to see where you can get good used lens. I prefer to buy better glass instead of a super pro body, so if I want FF I can go with the canon RP, buy the adapter and search for old good 24-70L lens on cheap, that would be a good starting point to have a good body with a great lens :D

That was so fun! I don't even care about cameras, I liked the energy and the secret shops.

"The cameras that they do have are usually older."
Hey, that looks like my camera... Oh yeah, I've had it for a decade easily so that counts as older I guess.

Norm! You're the go-to guy for this. I have a conundrum and need some advice. I recently and accidentally bought a broken Canon Powershot G7X Mark I from Yahoo Auctions. They didn't lie, I just didn't pay enough attention to the tiny detail that nothing shows up on the camera and it doesn't take pics or video despite turning on. I'm fairly adept at fixing things BUT cameras worry me due to delicate cables that can ruined.
So, my question is what should I do? I'm trying not to spend a crap ton of money. Should I buy some replacement parts and try to fix it myself? I think it needs a new LCD and new lens which seem not too hard to change out (so I think). OR should I send it off to the professionals to get fixed which would take a lot of time and money and by the end of it I might end up spending more for that than a new camera. OR should I keep this camera, maybe try to fix it, but maybe just buy a new one anyway? I guess I'm wondering if it's worth it to fix it/get it fixed.
Sorry for asking advice in a comment on your vid, but you know about cameras. And you're also in Japan. Help?

LOL! The first store to avoid in your video is the same one I warn everyone about. The first time I went there and asked about a price really shocked me. I thought I did not hear him correctly. The prices are insane. Still, that shop has been there for quite a few years, so it seems that he might just sell enough to stay in business.

Oh, cools, here's one I was wondering if you'd ever do, turns out you already had before I was a regular viewer.
I wonder what the situation for film availability is? I figure exposing to fewer x-rays would be good on a trip.

I love how the most amazing shops are found in the most unexpected places. Take one step too far and you'll miss it! The same seems to go for many other things in Tokyo as well. Would it not be too far off to say the city seems... Cozy?

Gonna check out the Kitamura store when I visit as my old point and shoot camera is almost dead now. BTW, can we assume the hair cut did not go well by the new baseball cap? LOL

I think I've been to a few of these shops. :D I was just thinking, the first video of yours that I watched was about you destroying your camera gear. Which I watched around march or april. I've just gone back and watched your very first videos with Sharla (who's video I might have led me to you, or it was Peter McKinnons when he broke his $6000 Canon 1D.) Wow you've come a long way. Congrats man. Next time I'm in Japan visiting the in-laws I'd like to buy you a beer (or coffee if you don't drink). Cheers!

I've spent way to much in Book Off over the years ... It's it wrong to have the proximity to local book off stores as one of the criteria for picking hotels when visiting different places in Japan?

    • @redoctober6521
      @redoctober6521 6 років тому

Nope, I will map an area I’m staying in and find the Book Offs, Donki, and Family Marts/7-Elenen/Lawsons before my visit.

I used to check convenience store locations before going ... but then I figured the chances are if you walk a hundred yards in any direction from any city based hotel then you are likely to hit (at least) one anyway :) ... or I just ask at hotel reception

I'm a sucker for those point cards, I have Sofmap, Bic Camera and Yodobashi :D
I had so much points at Sofmap one time that I bought a new smartphone for a friend for almost nothing.
But yeah, the back-alleys are the goldmines of Akiba.
Oh yeah, I never get a insurance of my tech stuff, I am one of those who never damage them.
