JAZAN, SAUDI ARABIA: High in the mountains of Saudi Arabia, in the very southwestern corner, on the border of Yemen, is Jazan province. It’s a unique part of Saudi Arabia, where some of the world’s most prized coffee in grown and where the mix of culture and food is unlike other parts of the country. Today we have the privilege to visit a local coffee farm where a local family will be cooking a full goat haneed in the backyard.
We began our journey from Jizan city, in the Jazan province of Saudi Arabia. The city is located on the Red Sea, yet just an hour drive away to Fayfa, and you’re transported high into the rugged green mountains that are famous for generations of coffee farming.
Coffee is more than just a drink here, it’s a symbol of hospitality and a gesture of welcome. The coffee is much different than your typical Americano - it’s roasted very lightly, and brewed with cardamom and saffron for a unique fragrance. Rather than using sugar, coffee is served black, but with dates so you can alternate between sips of coffee and sweet dates. The combination is perfect.
After a welcome and coffee, we lit the outdoor wood fire oven, and then took a tour of the farm to learn about the prized Khawlani coffee beans. The farming practice has been passed down for generations in this area. Along with coffee, there were many medical edible herbs throughout the mountain.
Back to the oven, we loaded up an entire goat, along with big handfuls of sour dough, scented with the aroma green leaves. The oven was closed tight for a couple of hours to seal in all the steam and smoke. This cooking technique is common in Saudi Arabia and really does a great job of smoking, baking, and steaming all at the same time.
The time finally came, and we dished out all the tender goat on the rice trays. There were also a number of side dishes, including fresh buttermilk served in a smoky wooden bowl, a variety of doughs served with ghee, and possibly the highlight for me; helba, a sudsy fenugreek sauce that’s definitely a unique flavor, and loved in this region.
It was a meal I’ll never forget, in this friendly coffee village in the mountains of Jazan!

I apologize for not being more clear, coffee originates in Kaffa, Ethiopia. It was spread to Yemen, and this region of Saudi Arabia sometime around the 15th century.
Yemen was a colony of Ethiopia if that makes you feel better.
We Ethiopian love you so much!

Mark is so respectful to other’s culture, I’ve been watching him for years since way back when him and his wife first moved to Thailand, he gets straight to the point on his videos which is food 😅, he appreciates and is grateful to everything that comes his way. Am sure he had many bad encounters while traveling to places but never he had expose any of them. He always positive and mindful. You are a good guy Mark. Stay blessed!

Thank you so much for your support over the years, and grateful for your encouraging words!
Pretty disrespectful you don't accommodate your guests in reality. Not saying that happened here but most Westerns just don't live like this and you should accommodate folks, I do for all my guests. I've never eaten anywhere on earth that people didn't know how we do things from using the toilet, showering (SOAP), wash rags in the booty (SOAP), wet wipes In the toilet, hand washing (SOAP) to eating food customs like on separate plates and utensils and that we were as clean or cleaner than they ever were in how we conducted our lives as far as simple things like those two basic modern human principles that prevent disease/cross contamination/parasites/etc and I see that a lot in these cultures who believe they actually live a "cleaner life" in that regard commenting about they do and "toilet paper is bad for you" when they only got half the story of how we clean ourselves (I don't have to break it down most people know exactly what I'm referring to on the other end of the Eastern spectrum). "Archaic communal/toilet practices" basically you're just asking for forever parasites and sickness if you've never grown up that way coming there. That's just how it is in some regions but it's okay, they learned about being clean way earlier than we did as westerners mostly.
All this talk of "respect of cultures" I keep seeing over and over on all these food shows swings both ways and I keep seeing it on all these food shows with things I wouldn't and most wouldn't partake in (this here, no big deal definitely one of the most bland food encounters imaginable. I'm not here to cast real shade on anyone or their culture, Mark included.
I'm just not the type to eat half cooked monkey brains in the jungle for example with tribes who've never bathed in their life and whose immune systems make ours look like malnourished geriatrics one cold virus away from "kicking the bucket". All depends on what you're working with physiologically and willing to do is where you're willing to go wherever and have usually been exposed to everything anyway and I have enough as is but I just don't get down with ebola and brain eating protein prions like mad cow type diseases you get from bushmeat as much as I can help it. Talking about people like Sonny on BFRS do, no sir, not me, lol.
This here Mark is doing pretty safe and mild in my opinion and I'd eat with them but as far as respect? Again that goes both ways and they very well know it in Saudi Arabia which is one of the richest and most educated cultures on earth.
You got me in sub-saharan Africa drinking bile, congealed blood, and sour milk like it's the best thing since sliced bread I must be high out of my mind with a 🔫 to my head because you can count me out 😆.

This Arabs are used to use their fingers to eat, but they use them with so much ability that they never stain their own clothes. Is amazing. The food is incredible and their technique is fascinating. I enjoyed so much! Thank you Mark! You have done it well again. A funny moment: All the arabs went asleep and Mark is still eating 😆😁😅 You have all of us used to see this marvellous.
One thing to mention that they are so careful to keep their right hand clean so it's used for food.. they left him to actually go to pray and that one guy had to sacrify his prayer time to keep him company , you could hear the call of prayer in the background
The dates are so fresh and the food looks so delicious !It is always fun to watch your videos !

As well as Yemenis
And this is Yemeni food.
look at the bloke wearing the Ma'waz (cloth covering the waist and below)
that traditional clothes is Yemeni clothes - saudi wear their white thobes
Jazan is Yemeni land that Saudi got by pressuring the former ousted president of Yemen Ali Saleh.
Our President currently Abdo Rabu Mansour Hadi refuses to give an inch of land of Yemen and guess what. He is stuck in Saudi. Make your conclusions mate

I'm amazed by the tropical fruits around. Bananas, papayas, mango trees etc. This area could be the food basket of Saudi Arabia. Amazingly nice people too.
Jizan is a food basket that can cover all the Gulf countries, but Saudi Arabia does not export agricultural crops so as not to affect the sales of Jordan, Lebanon, and some Arab countries that depend on it.
