The Rebs hear of this and send a spy, Merrill, to pose as a Yankee and steal the gold that the Indians have promised to the Northerners.

Baloney. Indians honored treaties only as long as they benefited by them. You'd last two minutes back in those days, trying to make Indians your disciples...they were cleverer than you.
