RE: tailing reds, yes, they can be a little tough (they're preoccupied!), but I have the best luck using cut ladyfish (fresh is best, but frozen works, too). I put a 2" steak on a circle hook and let the current drift it back 5 to 10 feet from them. they'll smell it and investigate. sometimes I add split shot(s) if the current is ripping. don't tell anyone.
